MLB draft starts today, I'd expect Austin Wells to be drafted today and if not he'll be picked early tomorrow. He gone. There's only 5 rounds in this draft as opposed to the usual 5000 or so. Other guys who could maybe be drafted are Donta Williams, Matthew Dyer, and Garrett Irvin. Chances are all 3 come back. A few of our signees, namely Chase Davis, Daniel Susac, and Nick Yorke are in line to be drafted.

Well Nick Yorke just went at #17 to Boston, he has been ranked in the 130ish range, so needless to say this is a surprise.

Pretty rare for a 2B to go that high. Good luck to him. We lost a couple of great bats between him and Wells

A HS 2B hasn't gone in the first round since 2009, there's something really really odd about this pick, he was expected to fall out of the draft because he is a very very strong commit to Arizona. I truly don't know what to expect here. Sox could be punting this draft and that pick to get the compensatory pick for next year.
On another note Austin Wells just went 28th to the Yankees.

Love the Dodgers pick. Can't have enough pitchers who throw gas.
And my high school (Harvard-Westlake, North Hollywood CA) continues to churn out first rounders. Where were the scouts when I was playing CF for them???

also shows that going to school out of HS can make a huge difference. He was drafted in the 35th round out of HS and now he gets first round money. That leverage of being able to come back has to help.
I spoke to the future father in law of a former Cat pitcher (who just went through TJ surgery) and he said the grind of the minor leagues is really tough. He mentioned that compared to the UofA that his school experience was like being in the big leagues travel and food wise and even the access to other smaller things made that college experience so much greater

Well either way looks like Jay has to come up with a new plan for his middle infield.

Matthew Dyer just went in the 4th round to the Mets, he will absolutely sign. Arizona has question marks at catcher and the other MIF spot opposite Jacob Blas at the moment. If Daniel Susac enrolls at Arizona he'll be the starting catcher.

Well only one recruit was drafted. This is going to be a ridiculously deep and talented team next year. I'm floored Chase Davis and Daniel Susac didn't get drafted.

Fastball gets up to 98mph and that's always going to play, especially at the college level, but he needs work on a second pitch (what Yeskie is for) and on his control. Probably looking at a solid set up man.

I've heard Arizona has landed this guy as a normal transfer. Had a very solid year his freshman year for a CWS team. I'm not sure if he would be immediately eligible or not (my guess is not). Arizona is likely to lose 3-4 core outfielders to the MLB after next season, so he's going to be important.

Choo, how do these schools (especially in the SEC) hoard talent with only 12.7 scholarships to pass out? Any secrets on scholly management?

It's actually 11.7, so even less. It's all about facilities man, although Vanderbilt in particular, has advantages that only a private school can provide money-wise. The new rule the NCAA granted recently, which helps private schools in particular offer more aid will only help those private schools thrive further. In all though, the SEC has facilities and fan support that the rest of the country just doesn't have. Arizona is in a good spot regionally though in regards to fan support and facilities, although Hi-Co could certainly be better from a fan's point of view.
On another note Arizona lost a very good pitching recruit in this class to a JUCO, because there will be more playing time and they can actually offer more of a scholarship to him than we could.
Speaking of JUCO, word is also that Dayton Dooney is transferring to Central Arizona and I'm not sure why honestly.

Choo, have you heard anything about attendance at Hi Corbett? Baseball is outside and you could space 2k or 3K people pretty easily.

Not yet brother, but attendance is going to be reevaluated after the new year. If every thing goes well we should even have fans in McKale in January.

Just got an e-mail that says the Pac-12 still won't let individual schools decide to have fans in attendance. (So how did ASU have some people at our game on Thursday?) Anyway, it says when and if they allow some attendance, season ticket holders will have the first dibs on single game tickets. Considering that there can't be more than 1,000 season ticket holders, and that Hi Corbett seats 10,000 without the tarps, I'd think they could let in two or three times that many and let them spread out.

Well I hope they can get all 56 games in this year abd that softball also plays a full schedule

Obviously there’s still a bit of time, but the opening day starting lineup is likely to look like this:
C - Daniel Susan
1B - Branden Boissiere
2B - Kobe Kato
3B - Tony Bullard
SS - Jacob Blas
LF - Mac Bingham
CF - Donta Williams
RF - Ryan Holgate
DH - Jacob Berry
Friday Starter - Chase Silseth
Saturday Starter - Garrett Irvin
Sunday Starter - Chandler Murphy
4th game Starter - Dawson Netz or Quinn Flanagan
Closer - Vince Vannelle

I’d expect him or Netz to get the start in a mid week game. Outside of that he’s probably coming out of the bullpen.

Berry may very well win the opening day 3B job. DH will be interesting and rotating all year long.

There is so much depth to this pitching staff. Johnson will have plenty of options. Doesn't look like there is a lot of power on the offensive side, but a lot of really good hitters. I hope before the season is over they will be allow fans to attend.
