Assistant Coaches

Post by Ned Zissou »

Now that it appears Miller is staying, what are the thoughts on who we would like and who are realistic candidates to fill our assistant coaching positions?

My totally random names are:

1. Kevin Ollie - Fired at UCONN, was Jim Calhoun assistant and seems to have lots of recruiting ties to east and west coast.
2. Michael Bibby - as a pro player, I always thought he had great insight into the game during post game interviews. He clearly connects to the younger generation player. I have no idea if there are conflicts between him and Miller that would prevent this.
3. Jim Calhoun - my far-outside the box candidate. Maybe he could help teach Miller how to win in the tourney (not meant as a shot at Miller, but few have ever been better in March. I always thought Calhoun was one of the best coaches of all time).

Calhoun might be next Uconn coach. Ollie got fired for cause, don't know what it was though.
Bibby, not sure, but it appears he can recruit.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gearry get a real chance. He has coached quite a bit.

Hope Raphael Chillious is a candidate, was at Washington with Romar for a while and short stints at Villanova, UConn. I don't think Brandon Roy is an actual candidate. Right now there's no news or anything on who the coaches could be, not even Cohen.

I've been advocating for Chillious man, he fits the mold of exactly what we need at the moment, and more importantly he's available.

I know who the first new assistant is and I'll save my thoughts for another day on that.

He's young, he's hungry, he's a hard worker, and he's familiar with Miller's schemes. Outside of that I've got nothing. I have no idea how he will be as a recruiter and quite frankly to me that's all that matters at the moment.

The next guy has to absolutely be a good recruiter and preferably African American.

Danny Peters Named One of NABC's 30-under-30

http://www.ballstatesports.com/news/2016/4/8/210873625" target="_blank
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State men's basketball assistant coach Danny Peters was selected to the 2016 Under Armour 30-under-30 Team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

The 29-year-old Peters joined Buffalo's Bryan Hodgson as the only Mid-American Conference representatives on the list designed to highlight the brightest young coaches in the country.

Peters recently completed his second season on the Ball State staff. He helped the program to its first 20-win campaign and first postseason appearance in 14 years. The Cardinals finished 21-14 (10-8 MAC), shared the MAC West Division championship and reached the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).

Peters graduated in 2010 from Ohio State, where he played for coach Thad Matta. He then spent four seasons with Sean Miller's program at Arizona before joining James Whitford's Ball State staff in the summer of 2014.
Looks like Whitford took him when he took the Ball State job

I’ve met him and I think he will be a good assistant for us. Has a bright future ahead of him but he will be our third assistant if that makes sense. We need a strong recruiter now as Phelps isn’t a recruiter from what I’ve been told.

But I really liked Peters when I met him and heard he was a very hard worker. Feels like he is ready for a big assistant job

Interesting...so Simon is potentially involved? I wouldn't mind it if he is ready to grind to help us recruit. I think Raphael Chillious should be option #1 though.

That's a fantastic suggestion.

Chillious was Romar's lead recruiter for many years and did a stint under Jay Wright as well. Was hired by Kevin Ollie to help him recruit... right before Ollie got canned.

He's available, experienced, and has a top notch track record of recruiting to the West Coast.

Terrence Ross
Tony Wroten
Dejounte Murray
Marquese Crisp
Noah Dickerson
Matisse Thybulle
Markelle Fultz

...all his dudes. Hiring him would also almost certainly net us Akinjo and the Lithuanian big man that decommitted from UConn.

Hopefully Romar would help make the pitch on our behalf.

Could he expect to be paid the same at Pepperdine as Arizona?

Could he expect to land the same caliber of players at Pepperdine?

Could he expect to coach and win the same marquee games at Pepperdine?

Pepperdine simply doesn't offer him the platform to succeed.

Any chance we make a run at now former UCLA asst David Grace? By all accounts he is a great recruiter and obviously would bring contacts in our already established recruiting areas. I would like this better than all the Simon rumors if there’s any truth to those honestly.

Honestly as an Adidas school with newfound competition on the west coast on the Adidas circuit in UW, I'd hire him with the quickness if I was ASU.

It would offer him a chance to remain in the LA area and, if his contacts are strong, perhaps succeed Romar when he moves on in a year or three. It would be a long play, no doubt, but it would also put him in the mix for the various smaller schools in the LA area as a HC. Or he can go back to the major route as an assistant and move away.

I can see a couple of plays there, and one would be to stay in the LA area. The draw of Pepperdine is you know Romar is not long for there. But downside is, like you mention, doing 1st assistant work at a smaller school, though WCC.
