Here's Weaver's highlights from this past season. Spoiler Alert, it's a lot of catch and shoot 3s.

Catch and shoot threes is what we wanted from Barcello from his time in Tucson. Only really happened in practices apparently.

I doubt Weaver hits 30% of 3's at Arizona. The line is now extended to international distance, and he will now have to face taller and quicker players while at Arizona.

TJ McConnell was an outstanding 3 point shooter at Duquesne (40%, 42%), but never could get in a groove at Arizona (36%, 32%) against better competition.

Weaver does have pretty good form though. Better than McConnell.

Get the embed code from YouTube then copy/paste

Should look like this

Code: Select all

On paper, we should have quite a bit of 3pt shooters on roster. Hazzard, Gettings, Weaver, Nnaji (won a 3pt challenge), Mannion, Green maybe also. Of course that doesn't always translate into games, eg: Barcello. Gettings, Hazzard, Weaver I'm extremely skeptical will shoot that well at Arizona, usually doesn't translate to high major basketball.

He has a couple of months to adjust. He should practice shooting from international distance while three assistants prod him with two-by-fours, two more assistants circle him on bicycles, two more throw grapefruit at him, and a kid flies a drone over his head.

I have to agree with this tbh, too much unproven and unknown at this moment - especially if Williams does leave. Maybe 20-25 is more accurate.

In bold are also pac 12 conference or potential opponents this year. Also the champions classic are all top 4 and will be great again.

Without any news on Williams, 29th is an absurd ranking for a team that will feature two top ten freshman, a USA basketball freshman, a five star sophomore, and a five star senior (with a bench of four star players and all conference grad transfers).

Somewhere in the teens is proper.

I think its really easy to poke holes into one specific team (too many new faces, too many unknowns, too much youth)... until you look at the team above them and the team below and realize that no team is perfect and that most teams outside the top four have serious question marks.

Georgetown is an easy one to focus on - they had similar "success" as Arizona last season going 19-14 and bowing out of the Big East tournament in the first round. They were nowhere near a Top 25 team last season... so why the top 20 rating here? They lose their senior center (their best player) and his back-up but add a very good center grad transfer. The freshmen and sophomores from last season (including star guard James Akinjo) get a season older... but there's no recruiting class to speak of (one player in the top 150, three more outside the top 250). Nobody returning from injury or any other kind of wildcard. It's just "this year I think they'll get better."

Arizona struggled last season, clearly. But has Sean Miller ever had a top 10 class and failed to turn that into a top 25 ranking? Nope. Even the 2015-16 season, with the turnover (losing TJ, Rondae, Stanley, Brandon), injuries (Ray Smith and Trier), and limited play from incoming recruits (Comanche, Simon, Pitts) - the Cats flirted with a top ten ranking and stayed within the top 25 all season. Mostly around the mid-teens, which again feels like a fair preseason assessment for this team.

You want to aim a little higher?

Duke is a projected top four team this season because they add the number four class to a five star guard and a collection of role players.

Arizona is a projected sub-top-25 team this season because they add the number three class to a five star guard and a five star center and two all conference grad transfers and a collection of role players.

Excuse me if I feel that Arizona isn't getting a fair shake here.

(Caveat: losing BWill would throw us down the rankings - maybe to where we are here - but realistically should still keep us as a top 25 team... there's not a lot of teams that can run out the talent, have the home court advantage, and have the coaching of Arizona this season).

Weaver ranked 42nd on the transfer market according to Bart Torvik... Barcello ranked 49th. Would really prefer to keep Alex.

The Kansas thing still blows my mind, they lose almost their entire roster from a 3rd place Big 12 team and add no one I would consider a difference maker. As far as I am aware the add a bunch of mid level recruits, an average transfer from Iowa and two guys who have not played basketball in a year. I do not see how they are a better team next year then Arizona as things are now.

Same here, good work ethic, knows the system, seemed well liked and more potential if you look at high school rankings, Weaver a 2 star, Barcello a 4 star. Barcello seemed content in his role too, but shows how little fans know.

KU should have a really tough interior with a ton of depth, an elite lead PG in Dotson, wing depth with defense and shooting between returnees Agbaji and Garrett and incoming four star Wilson, as well as a good back-up ball handler in McBride. I think they'll be a really dangerous team and I'm okay with their ranking.

I still think they may struggle with spacing if they don't have two of Dotson, Moss, and McBride on the floor together. To be a Final Four team, they'll need Ochai Agbaji to deliver on the promise that he'll start hitting his outside shots. Their forwards are not shooters - they'll need shooting from 1 through 3. We know better than most the folly of thinking that scoring at will from the post is a recipe for a deep tournament run.

I don't know if they're the second best team in the country, but they're a top ten team.

Zeke looks ready. Koloko putting on weight. Our front court depth is legit. Can Ira or Stone play back-up SF? We've got a lot of talent for only 80 minutes of PF/C play.

A lot of what Nick Johnson lacked was Green's size. I always thought NJ would be a longtime pro if he was 4 inches taller.

#15 - Arizona (-1)

Coach: Sean Miller

2018-19 record: 17-15

Notable players gone: Brandon Randolph, Justin Coleman, Ryan Luther

Notable players returning: Brandon Williams, Chase Jeter, Dylan Smith, Ira Lee, Alex Barcello , Devonaire Doutrive

Expected additions: Max Hazzard , Nico Mannion, Josh Green, Zeke Nnaji, Terry Armstrong, Christian Koloko, Stone Gettings

Sean Miller, even with an NCAA cloud hovering over his program, has secured a top-five recruiting class that should return the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament. The addition of grad-transfer Max Hazzard was a nice late development.

Nnaji can be a lottery pick IMO. Perfect NBA small ball 5. He’s going to be a VERY rich man in about 5-7 years.

Mannion, Green and Nnaji is our best 1,2, 3 of any class. My apologies to Tark, Ashley and Jarrett. While I’m sad about BW, I’m confident that this year will be an entertaining rendition of Wildcat basketball.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question...I'm not as up to date on our recruits this year as I usually am. But if Bwill doesn't play is Green capable of playing the 2? And then go big? For example: Nico, Green, Nnaji, Ira, Chase? Or is that too big/slow? I think Hazzard could be productive for us as well.

Now that Im thinking about it, if we went with those 5 whoever is playing the 3 would have trouble defending in the man defense.

Green should be fine on any wing on D. Asking Nnaji or Lee to cover a wing on D is the part of that lineup I don't like.

Yeah I half jokingly asked that same question a few days ago: "Can any of the bigs (Nnaji, Lee, or Gettings) play SF?"

Green can play the two with ease - that's his preferred spot next to Nico. Zeke and Stone maybe have the skill to play on the perimeter as a SF on offense, though I doubt Nnaji has the ball handling we'd want there. Lee I think could maybe defend on the perimeter but he's also liable to pick up blocking fouls out there and his suspect shooting touch is tough to project to SF play.

Of all of the bigs, I think only Gettings has viable potential to play SF. He's got the passing ability, outside shooting, and enough ball handling to be a threat from the perimeter (I've seen some highlights of him blowing by defenders on pump fakes from the corner). Likely just a situational use (injury / foul / certain match-ups). Mark Tollefsen played a similar role on the 2016 team at similar size (albeit with more bounce and less strength).

For example: Nico, Green, Nnaji, Ira, Chase? Or is that too big/slow? I think Hazzard could be productive for us as well.

Now that Im thinking about it, if we went with those 5 whoever is playing the 3 would have trouble defending in the man defense.
I don't think moving the bigs into the wing is the answer. The unfortunate domino effect of losing Williams is going to be small ball. Hazzard is going to get a lot of minutes. Ultimately I think shooting and spacing are going to be important to open up the post/lane for Jeter/Nnaji.

If we want to keep size, that means DD and DS with more minutes. Will be interesting to see how that plays out. I worry that needing/having to give minutes to DD/DS takes away accountability and we will have similar problems to last season. DD not playing Defense and DS dribbling and taking horrible shots.
