Where was this wall and is it gone? Was this at the Viscount?

I have no idea, but that is really cool. I imagine if they did have it licensed from the UA, they made them remove it after Lute left like they did with McKale.

Upstairs in McKale there's a conference room -- used for larger events, news conferences, etc...No idea if it still exists after the remodel.

With news of Bruschi coming back as Senior Advisor to Arizona Football....maybe we need one of these for basketball. Who would it be?

Two Of The Good Guys

Never met Ernie McCray, but what he's done with his life speaks for itself. Big Al was in my dorm. As is often the case, big scary looking dudes turn out to be very nice people. He was a quiet, soft-spoken guy. One day, someone he didn't even know had the hood of his car popped open trying to get it started. Al was walking by and offered to help. I was walking by too, and I just paused out of curiosity to see if he could get it started and what the approach would be, so I could learn something. He's leaning in there when the battery somehow sizzled and splashed acid in his face. I was scared for him personally, but couldn't help thinking how key he was to the team, and that instantly jumped it right past shocking and scary and into a full-blown crisis...and over something completely random like that. Fortunately, it missed his eyes and he wiped it off with his sleeve and ran in to wash it off and he was fine. I'm glad Ernie lived to see the honor, but it's a real tragedy that Al passed at such a young age and didn't get to see it. I'm sure he would have been very humble and touched at being appreciated and honored, even all these many years later.

I loved watching AL play as a kid. Always quiet and humble. I'm glad to see him honored and he deserves it. He was a big part of the Snowden years. He was the school's career leader in scoring for a few years.

Eras Of The Territorial Cup Hoops Rivalry

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2021 11:31 am
by TheCatInTheHat
I was nosing through an old media guide, and I saw a few things that seemed to provide a historical perspective to our basketball rivalry with ASU. The beginning of the series coincided with Fred Enke's arrival from Louisville for the 1925-26 season. For 32 years, Enke blitzed them to the tune of 72-27. Ned Wulk's arrival at ASU in 1957-58 was concurrent with Enke's slide as the game modernized. Former player Bruce Larson took over in 1961-62, and it took him a few years to put things together. Meanwhile, Wulk had built to a peak and was on a roll, as he went 14-0 in that period. But Wulk couldn't maintain that level, and Larson got more competitive, as he went 8-8 over the next 8 years. Fred Snowden arrived in 1972-73 when Wulk had built up some ranked teams again. But Snowden also built things to national relevancy, and he went 6-8 in his first six years (with a couple of extra games played.) In terms of the rivalry, the schools were basically even for 14 years. Then Snowden's slide began, as his fear of flying impacted his recruiting. Over his last 4 years, he went 1-9 with ASU. His replacement, Ben Lindsey, was famously bad and went 0-2. Then came The Lute Olson Era in 1983-84. In his 24 years, Lute amassed a rivalry record of 41-8, for a winning percentage that will probably never be touched. From 2007 to 2009, consecutive interim coaches Kevin O'Neill and Russ Pennell put forth reasonably competitive teams, but Herb Sendek had "The Beard" (which would have made a nice toupee) and took advantage of the transition to go 5-0. Sean Miller arrived in 2009-10, and he's gone 17-7 against ASU. At the end of the day, it's 145-88. I was a bit surprised that ASU's best "long-term" success in the rivalry was mostly the late 50s to mid 60s and in the late 70s to early 80s, and all under Ned Wulk. (Unless you count 5 games in two years under Herb Sendek.) Otherwise, certainly for about the last 40 years, success for them has pretty much consisted of a one-off upset and a parade.

I remember that game. There was thought that the time keeper started a second too late, good thing it wasn't at McKale. After the game Lute said "I didn't realize Khalid was that fast".

I couldn't agree more. Not much to glorify unfortunately and that won't be changing any time soon. With a multi year post season ban and scholarship reductions almost a certainty the future is not good. The program has been in decline for a number of years now. Watching UCLA get to their 4th Final Four since we last got to one kind of puts in perspective how much the program has slid into basic irrelevance. Maybe it helps some fans to rewind 30 years to salvage some form of glory and excitement. To me it's just depressing and pathetic.

It is very sad. He had a troubled life right from the start. Loved to watch him play. It was a miracle that he could even walk, much less play, after having his leg mangled in an auto accident while a student at Arizona. Hope that he, as well as those that he has left behind, find peace.

I started in fall of 81 at UA, so missed seeing him play.

But reading about him, what a terrible troubled life he had starting as a young child when his mother died, and the troubles that never left him until his death.

RIP Robbie.

I’m at the Chesterton (20-0) vs Valparaiso (18-3) basketball game.

An Indiana Friday night and pretty much the entirety of both towns are packed in this little field house.

It’s like something out of Hoosiers. Feels pretty old school.
