Guess I didn't look at the quote closely enough. Assumed he got it right. But OMG was the crew rough on us.

What's going to happen in L.A. this week? Anyone think we can go 2-0?

Of course we can go 2-0.

Feed the post, get to the line, slow the game down and work inside out. Defend the three ball.

Is it likely? About as likely as Trier playing. Which is to say "who fucking knows."

I like our size advantage vs. USC and think we can slow them down the way you've described. If we make FTs in that one, we win.

Not sure how we slow down UCLA. Their game is like an ongoing fast-break. They make a ton of threes, too.

You are right on all accounts but I haven't even seen an off shorebline. Maybe we get an addition to the roster and they are waiting? :)

Maybe it's because we have no chance and are fully doomed. Has anyone heard that Miller may not even show up?

For the love of god and for the sake of my health can this team figure out how to close out other teams when they build a 20+ point lead? Any day now please.

Guys stop moving without the ball on O and staying in front of their man on D when we get up big. That's a huge problem.

I know we've seen this now several times this year, but the more I think about it, Miller took a numerically calculated risk in taking the team's foot off the gas to save their legs for Saturday.

At least Texas A&M and USC got waaay too close. It's not a great habit. Defense is the big thing. 19 points in the first half and 47 in the second. First is very good, second is very bad.

Even though ASU never got within single digits, we did it there too.

I don't complain about road victories. We've lost to worse teams at SC. Yeah, the ending was hairy, but going up 20 on the road isn't often done. Been ages since we've done it there.

Wonder if the cumulative effect of being short-handed explains these second-half lapses. Guys going all out on the boards and on defense, then getting gassed with seven minutes to go. Pinder on a shorter leash means other guys logging more time. Parker still hobbled and can't find shot.

Thanks for the bank. And then he hushes the crowd. So American.

Odds are, we are 8-1 in conference at the turn. Terrific, given all that's happened. 9-0 would be dreamy (and a two-game lead over the Bruins). We will have to muck that game up and get to the line a lot, I think. Also, we need to finish those plays at the rim, especially Simmons and Alkins. Had some fast breaks last night, but then they'd throw up junk expecting fouls, I guess.
Right where I want to be.

Watching the game I thought we got out-rebounded by a ton, but it was only by 2 in each half, which was a little surprising to me. But we still gave them too many 2nd chance shots which allowed them to get back into the game. We also shot like dog shit in that second half.

I think if you remember that USC is a good team (not great, but good) playing at home, and that we haven't had much success there the past few years, the fact that we led 39 out of 40 minutes and won on the road while being out-rebounded has to make you feel at least a little better about squandering such a big lead.

that'll learn them not to lose leads.

The D has just been bad at times. Almost regardless of the cause, we need to play better if we want to be winning. ASU/USC are great examples. In the first half, we showed we can shut them down. In the second half, we got messy and sloppy and didn't.

If you want to really see this team's potential, those lapses can't happen. Miller knows that.

Still lead conference in scoring defense. Best at stopping threes. Miller wouldn't tolerate what these other teams are doing.

It's one reason I still have my man crush on Miller. He clearly isn't just playing to be good in the Pac. His program has bigger goals every single year, and even if our numbers are good against the Pac, second halves like ASU/USC don't cut it when you're striving for a Final Four or National Championship.

I love naked ambition.

yeesh, maybe we're fortunate to have ucla on saturday as opposed to the thursday game this trip. better for the coaching staff to correct for last night's second half lull, albeit a chronic lull that's been occurring all season, before heading into pauley. hopefully, the real teachable moments don't come when guys find themselves riding the bench on saturday. :(

I thought it was a nice win in one of our toughest places historically.

We would have won by quite a bit if Metu hadn't exploded and just killed Doosy.

Ristic is a mystery to me. He has the games when his focus on O is extraordinary and he just can't miss the 4 to 6/7 footer. And when he shows asurprisingly new pivot move once in a while.

He's boarding really well, and last night was terrific. But he couldn't get loose at all near the basket for his shot. And his D was terrible. Metu owned him. Doos lost him twice in the last 2 minutes and then committed the unpardonable----fouled him from behind after getting lost on Metu's blow-byes. And how about the last 2 min play when a shot bounced high and fast from the rim and on its way OB when Doos reaches up and ticks the ball to give USC possession. Or his lost O rebound on the other end when he fumbled the ball over his head forever, only to have the defender snag it easily.

We got up last night and I said to my wife "we will have some kind of lull...it is expected with college players, especially with no bench. The only teams that consistently hold 20 point leads are ones with a bench that is better than the other team."

I wasn't expecting a 1 possession game. That's what happens when the lull happens and you can't shake it. ASU...that is what I expect. Get up 20, cruising...the other team is going to string together a run where you are running bad offense and jacking up shots and not doing the extra work that is necessary to get the best shot. But notice almost without fail, when things become desperate, you settle back in and run something and get a dunk or layup. The thing last night was they kept answering, and then it went from lazy defense with a big lead to they were hitting everything. And it took a little luck on our part (remember Lauri's bank when you swear every bad shot goes against us), but we held them off and won a game that should have been about a 4-5 point game on the road by about that.

The thing many forget to keep in perspective is it really doesn't matter what order you score them in, as long as you score more. If we had been in a 5-7 point back and forth battle with them all night, people would say "that was a really good win...we looked tough. Took it to USC on the road and held the lead and never let up." But it would be the same win. In fact, I will take we are good enough to drop a 20 point bomb on a team then young and thin enough to let teams make a run, and this one is one of two that almost got out of hand this season (Texas A&M, USC). But let the hand-wringing commence to find a way to make running out to 22 point leads then holding on to win when the other team makes a run into a sign of weakness.

Last year, we used to fall down by 20 all the time, then like a clock, come rushing back, making everything , then....losing at the buzzer, or in OT or by 4. But look how tough we are. Resilient. I love this team's character!!! Why? Because they can fall down by a bunch and then almost come back against a team that checked out early, but still lose?

Naw...I'd rather be the team that gets up big, checks out, then holds on. It's a product of a thin bench and youth. But I'll take the big leads with the 1 in 5 possibility the other team may come back to make it close over playing 4 point games all game.
