So if Tommy gets McNeely, I'm pretty sure that gives us the best freshman class in the country for next season.

Bos wasn't coming back but Sanon was out of left field. Folks will tell you that doesn't mean anything but that isn't accurate. Lloyd has his starting PG. If he trusts MiniMart for 15 or so minutes a game he is done. If he doesn't he goes portal for a non-threatening-to-anyone-PG to back up Bradley. Small scale stuff but Lloyd has ghosted my guys (who aren't whales/important) under the guise the he is working his ass off.TucsonClip wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2024 7:14 amId be interested to see who Lloyd recruits at G if Love isn't back. This is more legit than those rankings posted upthread. And I think we could rise higher once the dust settles from the transfer portal.
I don’t know anything but declaring for the portal doesn’t always mean one is gone. It can be used as leverage for NIL fund raising.
I don’t read Scheer and Luke anymore but I wonder if their “Love may come back” news is based on the recent rumor that someone(s) has pledged significant $$$ to his NIL.
Often in the past when that site in the early off season posted “Joe may come back” is has been homer and wrong and sometimes directly opposed to what I was hearing (Terry and Koloko being the most recent examples).
I don’t think I’d bet $5 on any starting 5 for Arizona at this point.
Also, wanted to chime in and say I heard something similar as well. Not sure if it's a full pledge to his NIL or a donation to the hoops NIL/program with an earmark for Love.
I'm not against Love coming back, but the entire Sanon commitment seems so out of left field. He clearly wasn't scared of Bos and/or knew he was leaving. I don't see any 4s in the portal who could take over the type of scoring load we need, which is really the issue here without Love.
I am against Love coming back. Definition of insanity and all that jazz. Efficiency matters, no matter what they say on WA.

I'm definitely with you on the efficiency matters. This roster just feels so odd, and I know there is plenty of time, but either Lloyd is running with his freshman, or he has some major work to do.Winger wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 5:25 pmBos wasn't coming back but Sanon was out of left field. Re: 2024-25 Arizona Basketball
It does feel odd and 1 of the pieces ESPN used above to rank the Cats #8 is gone. Saw that Ballo was ESPN’s #1 ranked transfer as well. This is the first time Lloyd has had the option of running with the freshmen, will be interesting to see if he does so, as that is much less common than it was circa 2010-2015. Imo he has earned trust wrt building a roster and managing the offseason with the singular exception of building a team for March (and I would argue for B12 play as well, but maybe the shuffling of the Euros out is a move in that direction). As Miller’s players have filtered out I have not developed a good feel for what he wants in a roster as the personnel the fist 3 seasons has been all over the place.

Looking at the dates when last season's incoming transfers were announced.
Keshad 5/20/23
Love 5/30/23
Bradley 5/3/23
If that pattern holds true for this upcoming season, still a lot of major changes to the roster that can happen.

I think Townsend to UM is highly likely - He's a Michigan native, and Oakland is a small shcool that plays in the shadow of UM & MSU...
... and, UM probably is loaded with NIL$$$ & motivation for quick fixes!
He looks to be a good addition wherever he chooses to go!

Lloyd excels at recruiting, so I'm going to put a little faith in his ability to mold the next roster into a winner.

Here is how the Big 12 coaches stack up going into the 2024-25 season. Ranking uses a proprietary formula that is heavily weighted to NCAA tournament performance but includes consideration of regular season conference championships won, D1 won/loss records, and length of time as a D! head Coach:

17. Scott Drew - Baylor

No reason for him to reclass yet until Love makes a decision. He can then reclass and say he's opened up his recruitment if Love returns.

Re: 2024-25 Arizona Basketball
Now we have:
Bradley
Love (assuming he comes back)
Lewis
Townsend
Krivas
With a bench of:
Bryant
Phillips
Veesaar
Martinez
Stephen
I’m thinking we try to add “playable” depth, as I’m not sold on Martinez and Stephen contributing yet.

Re: 2024-25 Arizona Basketball
I just watched some of his highlights. It looks like he uses his footwork to establish himself on the post very well. Plus he seems comfortable putting the ball on the floor and hitting 10 footers.
I’m excited and hope he brings some leadership with him.
Tommy - let’s get to 110 points every game!!!!
I will see you there, or I will see you on another time
Re: 2024-25 Arizona Basketball
Tommy always wants a go to post scorer on the team. Gets that with Trey. And he is a good passer so if he gets double teamed he can make the right play, unlike Ballo who struggled with that. Hopefully Tommy stops him from taking his midrange pullups and fadeaways, dude shot like 1-9 on those shots in the games I watched. Prob why he had a 52 TS%, which is pretty terrible for a paint scorer.

I'm having a little trouble grasping Tommy's vision for next year's team. Will we play smaller? Use more players off the bench?
Re: 2024-25 Arizona Basketball
Townsend also gets a lot of fts. Took 6 a game last year, more than Ballo who teams would intentionally foul to stop him.
Re: 2024-25 Arizona Basketball
actually Krivas, KJ, and Jaden had the highest ft rates on the team after Ballo. So with all 3 starting and Trey there should be a lot of fts next year.

If he’s going 2025 if Love comes back..definitely give me Love. My only worry before (and I guess still could be) was losing out on Sanon to decommit if Love came back. But if he’s staying with us and just moving classes. Bring on Caleb

There are quite a few factors with coming in early like grades and passing core subjects. Maybe that was a struggle and he determined it was too hard or maybe he is shopping around. Who knows. No single player will dictate what a coaching staff does.

I don't read it as anything other than a having your cake and eating it too situation.

No chance he is staying in 2025. His proper class is 2024 anyway, and if Love comes back you don't think UCONN offers him the role we did? He can go anywhere he wants, no point in fretting about it right now. Just have to see how this all plays out.
Also not sure I saw anywhere where it said his true class was 2024, all I saw was everyone on every outlet saying he was gonna reclassify to 2024 when he committed.

Last I looked there were about 130 or so players declaring early for the NBA draft.
https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/new ... 203b72c634
Only 60 get invites to the camp based on NBA team votes and 60 total players get drafted.
I don't see any teams taking a flyer on Love enough to invite him to the camp and he will make a lot more money at Arizona than as a UFA or overseas.

One problem with that logic is that Caleb could make a lot more money by transferring elsewhere (think Ballo)Merkin wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:24 pm Last I looked there were about 130 or so players declaring early for the NBA draft.

That is what I heard.Beachcat97 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:52 pm So to be clear, if Love returns, we don’t expect Sanon to remain committed to AZ?
You think there are programs that will pay Love more than $1 mil next season? I don’t know the market well enough but that seems a stretch to me.dmjcat wrote:Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:52 pm One problem with that logic is that Caleb could make a lot more money by transferring elsewhere (think Ballo)

Love isn't in the portal, so how can he transfer? It's either playing professionally or return to Arizona.
Still has until May 1st though.

New rule went into effect this week that all transfers (including grads) have to renter by May 1.
I think there may be exceptions like coaching changes or something, but grads now only have until May 1

Excuse my ignorance on this, but doesn't this assume that Love is graduating this year? Just because he's in year 4 or 5 of his NCAA career, it doesn't mean his academic class standing is "senior." Or does it? I don't know what the academic requirement is for a student-athlete making progress towards a degree.
