I think maybe 2 of those calls were actual fouls. Hopefully he doesn't turn into Ashley where he gets fouls for breathing
But..."This kid is a stud," an NBA executive told Bleacher Report. "I've watched him over seven times—his skill level and soft touch from outside are things one can't teach. Get guys to have him lower so we can steal him."
"I know the easy comparison [for Markkanen] is Porzingis, but we really don't see him with that upside," one general manager said. "There are concerns, as with many European big men, of their ability to rebound in the physical nature of the NBA. And we don't currently project Lauri to be a plus rebounder or interior defender.
"We see him as more of a role player, sixth man, scoring threat off the bench, with an ability to become a Channing Frye-type of player, which I know isn't how the Arizona coaching staff sees Lauri. But once he fills out we see him as more of an offensive-oriented perimeter-type player."
You can improve on areas like toughness, physicality, rebounding and D. Those are frequently growth areas for an 18 year old.TucsonClip wrote:He's definitely not Porzingis, but he's also far more skilled than Frye has ever been.
Get him in the right system with a really good guard and he will thrive offensively. Its easy to look past his ability to put the ball on the deck, but I have been most impressed with that aspect of his game. He can go right or left, two dribbles to the rim, and also pull up for a jumper.
Even Jesus himself would tip his cap to a 7 footer who shoots the 3 like a guard, can put the ball on the floor and has plus athleticism for a 7 footer, AND is a plus rebounder and interior defender. Clearly that GM expects a lot from his 7 footers.Puerco wrote:"I know the easy comparison [for Markkanen] is Porzingis, but we really don't see him with that upside," one general manager said. He did an exceptional job defender Karnowski, a skilled 5th-year senior who is also 7 feet and has 70 pounds on him, and he did it not even 1/4 of the way through his freshman season. The GM is acting like there are handfuls of Charles Barkley's and Karl Malones playing the 4 these days.
He's gone. We need to enjoy him while we can. We've never had a player like him before, and may never again.PennZona20 wrote:rgdeuce wrote:Even Jesus himself would tip his cap to a 7 footer who shoots the 3 like a guard, can put the ball on the floor and has plus athleticism for a 7 footer, AND is a plus rebounder and interior defender. Shit I hope all GMs see him that way. Maybe he slips out the lotto and comes back w Ayton to form the most dominant front court of all time. Hey a kid can dream cant he???
I realize it's a pipe dream. I'm just hoping somehow he loves college and his dad encourages him to come
back one more year to solidify his staying power in nba since he has been there and the rush for first contract isn't as much as a family struggling to get by.

The quick answer = they are scorers and they are driving with that mentality. Lauri's scoring has taken a dip with the absence of a true pg facilitating the offense, both due to decisions and actual execution. His shooting ability and economical scoring ability has still given him some nice games, but you won't get the full LM without PJC.psiclist23 wrote:When simmons, rawle and kadeem are driving into the lane, why don't they kick it back out to Lauri more often? Our best 3 pt shooter. Seems like he needs more touches and he looked open often when not getting the ball. Am I missing something?
That would be a win-win for both AZ and Simmons.Puerco wrote:Kobi's got to get into the PG frame of mind. That's where we need him, and that's where the NBA wants him.

Immediate logic would say he should leave.Spaceman Spiff wrote:He gone.
Yeah, but leaving one year early means he earns one more year not on rookie scale, which nowadays is around 20 mil if you're a decent player. It matters more what happens when you get off the rookie scale than what your rookie numbers are.luteformayor2 wrote:Immediate logic would say he should leave.Spaceman Spiff wrote:He gone.
However, the difference between a Late Lottery Pick in 2017 and a Top-3 pick in 2018 could be $7-$8 million over his first 3 years depending on the pick.
If Draftexpress is right and Lauri goes at #8 this year, he is set to earn $7.9 million over his 1st 3 years. If the rookie scale stays the same for 2018 and he goes as the #3 pick, he will earn $12.8. If he goes #1, he earns $15.9 million.
It's obviously never set in stone how things will play out, but if he returns he is absolutely one of the front-runners for national player of the year. All the exposure plus another year of experience against American players will great for his brand. Likewise, he doesn't seem to have a predisposition to injuries so a massive insurance policy will be easy for him to take out.
I don't think he will stay, but if he does it will not be a bad choice.
You can never repeat Lute-isms too often IMHO...the man is a Basketball God! We are so lucky to have had him as Coach and have him as our Elder Statesman for the program! We were also very fortunate to have had Bobbi for as long as we did....RIP Bobbi.Merkin wrote:Not to keep repeating Lute-isms, but it's the second contract, not the first contract that matters.
The old axiom, not a Lute-ism, if you are lottery you go.
I liked that when his shot wasn't falling and Kobi asserted himself he seemed to focus wholly on rebounding and defense. Team player.Spaceman Spiff wrote:8.5 rpg over his last 4 games. That was something I wanted to see more of early, that physicality and presence on the glass. It's coming.

Seconded. So basically the game expires not when the clock hits 0.00, but when it touches anything after 0.00. As it happens, 2 or 3 points are awarded if it's the inside of the rim and net that the ball touches.ALASKACAT wrote:Thanks for the research!gumby wrote:No. Must bounce before the buzzer. Basketball is technically a team sport, but with only five players a side, star players can easily change a game. For the 11-2 Arizona Wildcats, Lauri Markkanen has become that player.
The 7-foot forward currently leads the Wildcats in scoring (16.1 PPG), rebounding (7.3 RPG), free throw success rate (83.3%), and three point percentage (a whopping 43.5%). His combination of skill and size had made Markkanen the focal point of Arizona's offense and has some NBA...
