Yeah I don't know if I like Zeng if he's 2021.

Unless he wants to be the next Lee.
I think Ballo is already in the next Lee spot, Zeng would be in the next Tibet Goerner spot which we already have Tibet Goerner in. I admittedly do not know much about Tommy Lloyd's plan for his system so maybe there is room, I just don't see it.
Goerner is a reasonable comparison for Zeng now. His shooting is the only thing I think will immediately translate. I don't think he can drive and finish through contact, and he'll get bullied on D and the glass.

I think he has significantly higher potential than Goerner just because he's taller, longer and more skilled, but right now, he doesn't have the physical ability to display much more than the J.

The dream is we keep everyone but Akinjo, snag Tyty, and a shooting guard. Grabbing Fanbo to redshirt and have him just bulk up would be the cherry on top

Rick?
well i guess it worked out for all involved. Lav was a useful 4 year rotation player, Kyle's made a bunch of $ overseas.
Garland iirc was the last Lute recruited player.

I saw going back to China as way more of an option honestly. I'm not surprised he's not going to college, but the G League? Bleh.

I love the NBA. I love college. I love big time basketball. I've gone to G league games and it's nowhere near the same atmosphere. A lot of teams have pretty much nobody show up, basketball at times isn't high quality basketball, and the cities these teams are in are just not basketball towns often times. I get you wanna get payed to but I'd say playing overseas is a lot better than the G league

I was going to go up and see Nico in Santa Cruz when they opened up for fans, but then he was called up.

Can't imagine anyone thinking Santa Cruz is a basketball town. There are only 400,000 people in the entire county of Monterey.

I don't even know if UC Santa Cruz (the banana slugs) even have a basketball team.

G-League makes a whole lot less sense for international players in my opinion. Just seems to limit their options.

The only way I can rationalize Zeng going to the G league is for money making purposes. The basketball in China is a huge market and I imagine he could probably make good money from Chinese sponsors while in the G league and trying to climb his way to the NBA.

Should've just stayed there and played pro over there. He would've been paid a lot more

I feel like he could have even gotten paid under the table and kept his college eligibility just to keep his options open in case his body and game don’t mature at the same speed.

Purely speculative from my end, but I think he would make more by playing pro in China. But I am just guessing that he feels this is the best way to make money while pursuing his NBA dreams.

I didn't realize there was fan interest and sponsor dollars in China for minor league Chinese players.

I know some American players who aren't good enough to play in China or Europe choose Mexico over G-League offers so they can make more money.

When Yao Ming came here he had to give a portion of his salary to to Chinese government.

Since NBA and Chinese Government have some monetary relationship, I wonder if Chinese Government had a hand in this?

Arizona wing Bennedict Mathurin to return for sophomore season
12 comments
By Brian J. Pedersen Apr 23, 2021, 5:49pm PDT

Another piece of the puzzle is in place for Arizona’s first season under Tommy Lloyd, and it’s an important one.

Bennedict Mathurin, who had a strong freshman year in 2020-21, will return for his sophomore season according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.

The 6-foot-7 Mathurin went from relatively unknown to a potential one-and-done NBA prospect after averaging 10.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 47.1 percent overall and 41.8 percent from 3-point range. He started 12 of 26 games, scoring 20-plus points three times including 31—tied with Jemarl Baker Jr. for the most by a UA player under Sean Miller—at Oregon State on Jan. 14.

Mathurin’s midseason surge started to get him noticed by NBA scouts, and the firing of Miller had a chance of further pushing him in that direction. But he was on hand for Lloyd’s first workout last week, and his return ensures Arizona will have three of its top five scorers back for 2021-22 along with forwards Azuolas Tubelis and Jordan Brown.

In case you need a reminder of just how talented he is, here are his highlights from his 31-point game against Oregon State.

I thought he was 2 years away from being a college contributor, so it's hard for me to think this goes well for him.

Maybe a team takes a flier on him in the second round next year, but I just can't see how he's close to NBA ready physically. He's 6'9 and can shoot, but right now, that's pretty much it, and I think he'd get taken apart on every other level by an NBA player.

The flip side, this is probably best for his development. The G league is made to push him out there and let him take his knocks and hopefully toughen up and get more physical. College isn't because unlike GLI, coaches in college are trying to win first and foremost.

This has more to do with the marketability of the next big Chinese star playing in the G League then his actual talent. The NBA knows this game and knows he can be awful but the added merchandise sales and viewership in China will pay off exponentially. This is a purely a money move, not a move meant to be in the best interest of Zeng.
