Re: 2023-2024 Arizona Basketball
That Bal couldn't crack the rotation this year is very telling. Disappointed, but when you play less minutes as a sophomore than you do a freshmen, then you should rethink the school you are at. Bal just never took the stop between freshman and sophomore we were all hoping he would take.
I don't see that for Boswell, who was already a better player at the end of this year as compared to game one. In fact, Bos was our best outside player against Princeton, and I wish Tommy would have given Bos some minutes in clutch time. Because with Kerr out there, we were stagnant, and it was ugly.
I'm hoping Pelle stays, because he is capable of playing PG. I would imagine we also pick up a few transfers as well, and if you're a mid-major guard/swingman who thinks he can play at the next level, I'd be contacting Arizona right now. We're losing Ramey, Kerr, and Bal. Definitely room for a good transfer swing man.

He has to learn to shoot imo if he wants to come back, otherwise it's diminishing returns
Was surprised he didn't work on it in the off-season, his outside shooting and free throw shooting has been atrocious.
And the ability not stretch out the defense hurts our spacing and offense. Both Kerr and Tubelis really didn't grow much and have been the same player since first stepping into the court
Tubelis also isn't going to all of a sudden becomes a dawg with his on court personality

Re: 2023-2024 Arizona Basketball
That's too bad about Bal. High upside but just couldn't develop for some reason. Maybe Lloyd and crew are just better with bigs. But Boswell did quite well.
Could have had lots of minutes next season with Kriisa, Henderson and Ramey all gone, and only Lewis coming in, so far anyway.

I expected Bal would transfer. I’m not overly surprised Kerr would transfer with how the season ended. I hope Larson stays.

Akinjo was effectively a college free agent. Momo wanted to be closer to home.
Kriisa is transferring because...?? He can do better than starting PG at AZ?
I'm not at all broken up over today's news, just surprised. I imagined Kriisa could go start getting paid in Europe, but where tf is he going? He's not Remy Martin.

Ahhh, made me think of Will Bynum, who did start some games for the UA then transferred to Georgia Tech.
He initially claimed he wanted to be closer to his mom.
In Chicago.
Then the real reason came out: https://www.azdesertswarm.com/basketbal ... orgia-tech

Bynum should have been the starting PG.

Will Bynum...wow. There's a name I haven't thought about for a long time.
So when Bynum got to Tucson, he had Gardner and Salim ahead of him. Then the following season we brought in Chris Rodgers(!) and Hassan. So for a little while there, the backcourt was crowded. Iggy joined the team as well in '02. I did think Bynum would become a big-minutes player eventually if he'd stuck it out, but it sounds like he needed to be back in Chicago.

Was it Lions or Momo that transferred and went to Iona? Or were they not PGs?

Momo went to Iona. Though he was more of a sg than a pg. Lions finished his college playing days while at Arizona, also more of a sg. Too bad he was only elgible for a year, guy was money when he was needed the most.
Edit: They both played pg at AZ.

He's really not a ball handler at all, did you not watch Larsson make turnover after turnover when teams pressed Arizona late in games this year?AzCatFan2 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2023 3:34 pm I'm hoping Pelle stays, because he is capable of playing PG. Even Kerr wasn't that good with a full court press, he struggled to break free by himself, or make dumb decisions that would lead to turning it over
That BTW should've been a huge red flag about this team

I think the point about big men is that even when they score 20+ points in a tourney game, that alone isn’t enough to carry their team to victory, as it may have been in many reg season games.

It's like rats running from a sinking ship. I expect Tubelis to declare (if he's smart) and possibly more transfers. Next year is going to be rough. Could Boswell bolt? His demeanor during the Princeton post game presser made me wonder. Tommy won't have the luxury of Sean Miller recruits next season. I'm still not convinced he's a good recruiter. I hope he proves me wrong. So far I'm not impressed.

Disagree BC. The amount of money being thrown at many of the top players is something that CTL & the UA won't be able to match. I just posted an article on NIL (and what some of the Miami players got) on the football board.Beachcat97 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 11:32 am https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... ter-portal

The recruiting universe has changed completely from just a few years ago. Realistic fans need to downgrade expectations........we are NOT going to outbid Phil Knight for a player that UOregon wants. We are going to have problems matching any of the SEC/B1G schools if it comes down to money given the $75-100M/yr media contracts those schools have (which is 3-4 X what the UA is receiving).

I can understand not being able to compete with Phil Knight, but I'd think there's still enough in the coffers to lure good players. Maybe not the best players, but does that even matter? I just read that this year's Final Four doesn't have a single McD's AA. Tommy needs to recruit players that fit his vision for the program, and we need to pass on guys that are simply looking to get paid.

Yep, I wouldn't even consider giving money to my alma mater, especially if it could help our athletics programs.
I'll leave that to PHX and others.

Re: 2023-2024 Arizona Basketball
I heard from a fairly reliable source that Creighton was getting each basketball player well over $100k. Does the U of A have those kind of donors?
Besides PHX.
Also, my understanding is that the school still can’t pay the players. So how do they get the $ from the TV deals into the players hands?

Streaky 3 point shooter too. Not impressed, at least with the eyeball stats test early in the season, but sure shot well later in the season.
And look at all those 2 point shot attempts. Not afraid to get closer to the basket unlike Kriisa.
