If there's a 2020-2021 season, hopefully Arizona will be a special exclusion from it. At least help save lives elsewhere.
Re: The 2020-2021 Season Thread
So, the new ICE rule is that if you are a foreign student and your school doesn't offer in-person classes, you will be deported.
That doesn't bode well for all of our international recruits (if there even is college basketball this year if school isn't happening in person).

I can't imagine there's not a way around this for universities. Truth be told all it takes is for Robbins/Crow (both bball teams let alone other programs on campus will have foreigners) to talk to someone like Sinema or even McSally (as worthless as she is) and there's things that can be done for our guys. I'm sure there's also a class that can be set up for all the guys that's "online," but has some in person lab or something to get around that.
Re: The 2020-2021 Season Thread
Since there is so much revenue tied up in international students at all colleges, I have to believe you're right and that they will all offer some kind of in person outdoor lab or study hall, even if all other indoor in-person classes are cancelled, to get around this rule.ChooChooCat wrote:I can't imagine there's not a way around this for universities. Yeah there's too much money at stake here on numerous different levels. If work arounds don't work for some reason then politics will do its job.Chicat wrote:Since there is so much revenue tied up in international students at all colleges, I have to believe you're right and that they will all offer some kind of in person outdoor lab or study hall, even if all other indoor in-person classes are cancelled, to get around this rule.ChooChooCat wrote:I can't imagine there's not a way around this for universities. Re: The 2020-2021 Season Thread
Guys: the reality is that all a school has to do is list a course as F2F or "hybrid" (blend of OL and F2F), even if the course is being taught entirely OL. How is the federal government going to monitor whether courses listed as F2F are actually being taught on campus? They can't. It's logistically undoable. So I imagine schools will be looking for the best administrative loophole, which shouldn't be hard.
Oh, and btw, fuck ICE.

With ASSU getting Martin and Verge back that has to put them near the top. That is a great backcourt. Might not matter though as we might not see a season anyway

The college football season is going to be canceled in the coming days. Can hoops be too far behind? I’m not spending much time thinking about the 2020-21 season because if it happens at all, it’s going to look strange and probably end up with a big ole asterisk next to it. Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

Yeah. For the early rounds, they could have multiple "bubbles" in different cities (players and all team personnel tested regularly), each with a portion of the teams in the tournament. Pick cities with lower numbers of cases and strong health care capabilities. They could do the entire tourney in four cities.azgreg wrote:

Re: The 2020-2021 Season Thread
Just like in football, not playing OOC is really going to hurt the AD of these smaller schools that come in get beat down for pay. My former employer, Cal Poly, did that in both programs to support the entire AD.
Like Choo says, there will be some changes coming and many schools athletic programs will not survive.
But think it's a great idea otherwise.

Like with football, not being able to get paid to get beat down in McKale for OOC is really going to hurt a lot of smaller colleges. Some may never recover as school funding is going to get cut, and they can't make up the difference in the athletic department.

Re: The 2020-2021 Season Thread
Serious question: is there a sports streaming app where I can watch any past game, in any sport, on demand? Basically, a Netflix for sports. I'm realizing it may be a while before I watch live college hoops again, and man would it be fun to re-watch some of my favorite AZ games. I've got a few saved on the DVR, but I could really go nuts if I had access to the 90s Pac hoops vault.

I put Arizona Wildcats in as a favorite to record on my DVR and it usually gets 3-6 old games a week recorded. Late last year it recorded some early 90s Cats games. Got to watch a young Allen Iverson lose to us. Expect P12/FSAZ to play a lot more coming up now that we have nothing until 2021

I just think it’s surprising that Silicon Valley hasn’t produced this yet. Could the licensing and distribution with sports content be that much more challenging than with movies and TV series? Would it be so surprising to see Amazon or Facebook become a major distributor of sports media down the road?

I thought FESPN had something called The Vault.
Only select games though.
Anyway, is this the end of PAC-12 Network? I can’t imagine how the are going to sell any ads anytime soon.
I would also think a lot of people will drop the channels if they are paying extra.

Probably would be better for everyone to be here sooner than that. Everyone going to class or living on campus is required to report to Bear Down Gym and get a 2 hour return covid test before doing anything else. Any positives will be quarantined somewhere on campus for 2 weeks. Dorms open this Friday for early arrivals to get tested an cleared.

Re: The 2020-2021 Season Thread
On Tuesday, Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott not only postponed football with the optimism that it would hopefully be played in the spring, but also decided to cancel all sports competitions for the rest of the year.
“The announcement made yesterday regarding the delay to the start of our season did not come as a surprise to our Pac-12 coaching group," Miller said. "Since the early part of April, we have been communicating regularly on several topics, including the 2020-21 season. The new start date gives our conference the best opportunity to have a successful season in the safest environment possible for everyone involved, especially the student-athletes."

The Pac had a number of guys on the fence about returning to school or going pro. I'm not really seeing the upside of returning to school at the moment. This doesn't include Nico, Josh and Zeke because those three had one foot out the door the minute they arrived in Tucson.

Nonconference bubble idea pitched to at least 50 college basketball programs
Jeff Borzello
ESPN Staff Writer
College basketball might have its first Plan B. An event operator in Houston has proposed a bubble involving 20 teams that would allow college basketball programs to play an entire nonconference schedule in three weeks in December.
Rhossi Carron, who ran a nonconference event in 2019 and has two planned for the upcoming season, said he sent a proposal to at least 50 programs.
It's believed to be the first detailed bubble proposal sent to programs for the 2020-21 college basketball season.
"Nothing is bulletproof, but based on what medical professionals are telling me, a bubble might be the only way to do it," Carron told ESPN. "Our goal is to create a safe, controlled and competitive environment that places priority on the safety of the student-athlete."

I'm even reading that the "bubble" could be a shutdown college campus. I mean, good luck selling that to the community and the students' families. Imagine UofA saying to Tucson, "So, all classes and non-essential campus operations are suspended until further notice, and we're instead going to have only student-athletes on campus, quarantining, so they can play their seasons."azcat49 wrote:Watching any sports in a bubble sucks.
