2015 BDW Tourny Knock Out Challenge

Post by azgreg »

Saw this on another forum and it sound interesting. let me know what you think.
Let's have a little fun with March Madness, shall we? Rather than pick an entire bracket, which is impossible, I've decided on another method for choosing who wins bragging rights. It's really simple. It goes like this:

1) Before each round is played, you choose one team that you feel sure is going to win their game. If they lose, you're out of the challenge. If they win, you pick one team for the next round.

2) You score points based on the team's seed. For example, if you pick Kentucky as your first-round team and they win, you score one point, because they are a one seed. If you pick Hampton, and they win, you score 16 points. (But if Hampton loses, you're out.)

The fun part is that you have to walk a thin line; pick all the "low seeds" and you're very likely to stay in the challenge all the way to the end, but you don't score many points, so you probably won't win. Pick "high seeds" and you score a lot of points if they win, but they're more likely to lose and if they do, you're out of it entirely.

You start all over again right before each round begins. There is no need to choose the same team again, but there is also no prohibition about it. You just pick one team and that's all there is to it.

Questions?

Just look at all the games that will be played Thursday and Friday, and pick ONE team. Post the name of the team in this thread.

If the team you picked WINS, you have to pick one team from the games that will be played Saturday and Sunday. You have to post the name of your team for the second round BEFORE ANY GAME of the second round begins, or you're out.

As a tie-breaker (in case of a tie), please choose the margin of victory in the Kentucky-Hampton first-round match-up.

#2 Arizona.

I'm assuming we don't recognize the first four as a "round."

Edited-I don't know what I was thinking.

Though, given how my bracket often gets blown up rather quickly, I'm not sure it's a good idea to wait for my pick ;)

Question. Does this apply to the play-in games?

Ah, fair enough.

Kinda tempting to pick against kansas......will have to ponder this for a bit.

I'm a little surprised nobody has picked ucla yet....they played us tough, seem to have enough talent to get a win even if they didn't deserve to be in the tournament....

I was down to UCLA and Texas and I wondered who would be more motivated to win a game: Alford or Barnes? Since Alford is solely focused on making sure his son gets enough shots, I went with Barnes.

We could adapt it to be: Let It Ride

Instead of picking one team each round, every person picks three teams. For every win you get the seed as points.

So, say I pick Buffalo, Arizona, Virginia.

I think Buffalo has solid shot at Sweet 16. I'm banking on 24 points, but it could just as easily be 0. So enter the other, more stable options.

It allows you to risk without flunking, and keeps the tournament relevant for all longer.

Rule 1: pick 3 teams
Rule 2: one must be a lower seed
Rule 3: one must be a non-major conference
Rule 4: #2 and #3 can fulfill each other
Rule 5: points for each seed accrue with each progressive win
Rule 6: if you correctly choose the Title Game, 25 bonus points

Minimizes risk of ties.

Just a thought.
