Who you got?

The Zona Zoo released a list of players from when the Zona Zoo started to today. They gave $ value to players and said you have $20 to spend for 5 starters and 2 reserves. A student who works in the UA Sports Info Dept. took it one step further. Here's what he put together and do me a favor and don't waste time saying a player should be higher or why so and so isn't on there - he went back to the Snowden years so not everybody made the cut but there are players that every age group can pick from. Have fun with it and give your picks.

Point Guard
$6 Mike Bibby
$5 Steve Kerr
$4 Damon Stoudamire
$3 Jason Gardner
$2 Jason Terry
$1 Eric Money

Shooting Guard
$6 Gilbert Arenas
$5 Salim Stoudamire
$4 Khalid Reeves
$3 Miles Simon
$2 Coniel Norman
$1 Nick Johnson

Small Forward
$6 Sean Elliott
$5 Richard Jefferson
$4 Luke Walton
$3 Iggy
$2 Michael Dickerson
$1 Judd Buechler

Power Forward
$6 Derrick Williams
$5 Al Fleming
$4 Anthony Cook
$3 Michael Wright
$2 Aaron Gordon
$1 Eddie Smith

Center
$6 Bob Elliott
$5 Sean Rooks
$4 Loren Woods
$3 Brian Williams
$2 Channing Frye
$1 Jordan Hill

I got Eric Money, Coniel Norman, Sean Elliott, Anthony Cook and Brian Williams as my starting 5. Michael Dickerson and Aaron Gordon as my reserves. $20

Damon, Terry, Nick, Elliott, Gordon, Wright and Frye.

Even though Damon and Terry are listed at pg's, no reason you couldn't play them together. On the whole, I went for flexibility and the best player in the program's history.

Nice. This is good.

Money $1 (easy pick)
Norman $2 (best buy and it's Not close)
Sean Elliott $6 (expensive but worth it for the best player ever at AZ)
Gordon $2 (Money to Gordon all night long)
BWilliams $3 (can score and defend the rim)

Frye $2 (can play the 4 or 5)
Dickerson $2 can play the 2 or 3)
Terry $2 (can play the 1 or 2)

You only get two reserves.

National Player of the Year (Terry) for $2 is a better deal than Norman.

Great minds think a like!! I liked AC over Gordon because he was a rim protector but he also had a better offensive game than Gordon.

You are right, too many reserves. I would take Norman over any shooter we have ever had. 17-21in the opener at McKale and 21-24 on the road at BYU. Dude never missed.

Terry was tremendous as a Jr and Sr but Corn put up his numbers as a freshman and sophomore in the WAC which at the time was every bit as good as most of the years the PAC 10 was around.

I would probably drop the diesel and keep Terry and Frye for there position flexibility

I don't know about that in regards to Terry over Norman. Put Norman in todays game with the 3 point shot and he's Steph Curry in my mind. He had a pure stroke that is God given and only a few have.

I didn't see Coniel play but have been told stories. How was his defense though?

JET's NBA career tells me he was the more complete player, so for the same price I'll take him.

Norman was an adequate defender but defenses back then were not like todays that is for sure.

His NBA career was short because he really didn't have much of a handle and would struggle creating his own shot. Without Money's penetration and kick he wasn't as effective in the league. Just never was in the right system in the league.

Can't go wrong with Terry who has been a tremendous pro and locker room guy. It will be interesting if anyone who saw Norman play will choose otherwise though

I'm assuming when we pick these players, we get to pick them at their peak of AZ performance? I'd go:

$5 Steve Kerr
$2 Jason Terry
$5 Salim Stoudamire
$2 Coniel Norman
$2 Michael Dickerson
$2 Aaron Gordon
$2 Channing Frye

Which would obviously mean having AG play center at times and then probably Dickerson at the 4 at times. But I wouldn't care. I'm picking based off guys who I think would thrive in the current landscape of basketball and how the game is currently reffed. I think this core group of 7 guys would put up a hell of a lot of points and have enough D when it mattered, as well as enough size and length where it matters.

It's hard to leave Sean off my picks though....but....it's just he's so damn expensive

Oh, and here's another question, do we get to pick our walkons? Because that could make the list even more fun. I can already think of at least 3 walkons I'd put on the team that I think would round it out rather well.

Didn't BDub play more PF at the UA than center? He had Stokes and Rooks at the 5, the Tucson Skyline.

Point Guard
$2 Jason Terry

Shooting Guard
$4 Khalid Reeves

Small Forward
$6 Sean Elliott

Power Forward
$3 Michael Wright

Center
$2 Channing Frye

Reserves:

$2 Michael Dickerson
$1 Jordan Hill

Terry, Norman, Elliot, Williams, Hill with Aaron and Nick for defensive help off the bench. My starters would average 106 ppg.

For me, Terry was the easiest buy. $2 for the national player of the year, and a guy who can play both guard positions?

Nobody picking RJ. Smart. Most overvalued on the list. It's also the position that has the biggest dropoff after the top pick.

$2 JT
$3 Simon
$6 St. Sean
$4 Cook
$3 B-dub

Reserves: $1 Money, $1 Hill

Three first-team AAs on the perimeter, including two NPOYs. Best shot blocker in school history at the 4 (could run the floor like a gazelle)) Skilled post-up guy at the 5.

Instant offense (not that I'd need it) off the bench.

Reeves wasn't NPOY, otherwise there would be a jersey ceremony. Second team AA on most lists.

Starters:
Jason Terry (tempted to spend $6 on Bibby, but Terry is a great value at $2, and not a significant drop from Bibby)
Miles Simon (good value at $3, versatile scorer, big-game player, can score 30 in a national championship game)
Michael Dickerson (great value at $2, tremendous defensive player, can play shooting guard and small forward for rotation purposes)
Derrick Williams (worth the $6, one of the most dominant scorers and physical players AZ has had, can score inside and outside and get to the rim like no other Wildcat in recent memory)
Brian Williams (definitely worth $3, absolutely underrated on that list at $3, one of the best centers to ever play at AZ)

Reserves:
Aaron Gordon (fantastic, athletic player, great value at $2)
Jordan Hill (with only $2 left and no one ideal left at the $1-$2 price tag, he gets the nod and provides additional size and defense in the paint)

I know that TJ, Chris Mills, Russell Brown and Pete Williams were in the discussion. You could call them last 4 out. The person who did this is a college student so he asked some old timers like myself to chime in. Otherwise his list would've looked similar to what the Zona Zoo put out.

I think you got it exactly right.

If Norman had a 3 point line he would have been the highest percentage 3point shooter in history. His defense was OK, but the Fox didn't care about defense all that much. A good defensive effort for Snowden was if we held the opposing team under 80 points.

Money could penetrate a brick wall but couldn't defend a fence post if his life depended on it.

Personally, I would have preferred Jim Rappis at PG.

If you count regular season only, Dickerson should really be #2 at SF. My biggest knock on Dickerson would be his NCAA tourney issues, but regular season, he was easily better than RJ and Walton, IMO.

(4) Khalid Reeves
(3) Iggy
(6) Derek Williams
(2) Channing Fry

Reserves

(1) Jordan Hill
(2) Aaron Gordon

I think this team would provide size, defense, and actually enough shooting to potentially spread the floor too. I will admit I didn't really have a chance to watch the Cats in the 80s or early to mid 90s, but I hear Khalid was amazing so I figure he gets me the fire power needed. Plus while Aaron Gordon wasn't a sharpshooter he could come in the game and help on the back court especially on defense.

PG Jason Terry $2
SG Salim Stoudamire $5
SF Luke Walton $4
PF Aaron Gordon $2
C Loren Woods $4
Reserve Channing Frye $2
Reserve Nick Johnson $1

This team is all about defense on the interior. Shot blocking galore, plus elite rebounding. Walton plays Point Forward and allows Terry to cut through the lane and Stoudamire to range outside knocking down dagger threes. Nick off the bench to stop any opposing guard who is going off and Channing could come in for rebounding and as a mid-range threat to spell Aaron.

I love this team. I'd take them against any other UA team you can put together, cost be damned.

I would place Chris Mills second, if he were available. Co-conference player of the year, 20ppg, 8 boards. RJ, 11 and 6. Never even a first-team conference selection. Dickerson also better. Wouldn't say easily better than Walton, who was a better rebounder and passer. Point forward skills. Nonetheless, Dickerson a great value at $2. More valuable than Iggy and RJ.

He shot horribly in the Final Four in 97 too. People don't remember because we won, but we could have beaten Kentucky by double digits if Dickerson was his normal self.

It surprises me Walton gets any love at that price. He was good, but I couldn't in good conscience buy at a higher price than Iggy and Dickerson. I forgot about Mills, but he's easily a top 6 SF.

I know the game has changed a bit, but can you imagine Pistol Pete Marovich with a 3 point line? Even without it, he never averaged less than 44 points a game.
