2016-2017 Loss Post-Mortem Thread

Post by RiseAndFire »

There are always multiple reasons for a loss which are discussed on the forum in various threads, never logged or summarized in one place. This is the 2016-2017 Loss Post-Mortem Thread.

The record is now 21-3 having dropped to Oregon (see 2/7/17 post below). RPI is 12, SOS is 41. The cumulative loss profile looks like this:

0 - Poor defensive rebounding
1 - Defense not sufficiently nasty - oregon had 85 points on nothign but 3s and layups/dunks.
0 - Lauri or Ristic in foul trouble because of having to hedge 30ft from basket repeatedly
2 - Opposing player scores over and over because player assigned can't defend him and we have no answer or extra help Dorsey
1 - Opponent uses screens effectively resulting in too many mismatches (PJC guarding a big, Dusan guarding a quick ____) I would say many of the 3s were off screens

OFFENSIVE ISSUES
2 - Other team played a D we are not familiar with, particularly any type of zone
1 - Needed time outs at the end but we already used them all
0 - Turnovers (>15)
1 - Missed FTs (<70%)
2 - Poor 3-point shooting (<30%) this is crucial when facing the type of D oregon played
1 - Long stretches without a FG made (> 4min) - 7 minute scoreless in 1st half
0 - Offense stalls because they're so tired from playing D
0 - Offense stalls because not enough fast break points, too much half court "grind"
0 - Offense stalls when red-hot-shooting player is inexplicably removed from lineup

GENERAL ISSUES
1 - Trier mysterious absence
1 - PJC's turned ankle
0 - Stinkin Refs hate us
2 - Opponent over-performed or was underrated
1 - Its all Dusan's fault
0 - Its all PJCs fault
2 - Chalk it up to freshman mistakes
1 - We played Oregon or Wisconsin again
1 - Playing on the road in the Pac12
0 - Larry Scott

I would assume the coaches will want to see this as well????

Crazy how Lauri's difficulties in hedge and recover led to 5 personal fouls against Butler, but have never led to more than 2 personal fouls against any other team.

It's almost like the issue isn't hedge and recover, but instead the reffing against Butler...

I'm guessing there is going to be some kind of mathematical equation at the end of the season which will mean nothing to anyone except Rise&Flail.

Here is what Rise and Fire's post will add up to at the end of the year:

Sean Miller sucks because his defense wears the team out. He should play zone more, his substitution patterns suck too.

That is what he is trying to get to.

I can't remember if it was him or RockyRaccoon (Probably the same person), that has an obsession with Tony Bennett at UVA.

I am absolutely with you which is why I counted +1 for "refs" in the Butler loss. However Lauri was in fact hedging at the time and put himself at risk of silly fouls. whether the ref falls for it when some player smartly creates contact to draw a foul is irrellevant.

btw, in the counter the issues recognized/counted in losses will be plussed up by 1 and listed in red

already generating good discussion - nice! Also I've found this to be a solid drinking game framework, for those so inclined

You have to hedge on pick and roll. That is necessary.

good game last night vs Tx Southern. the team looked good fast-breaking and I noticed when we went to a zone that Lauri and Dusan seemed to stay near the paint and far away from hedging screens 30 ft from the hoop and the silly fouls.

good 3% (57%), Poor FT (%50)

big test vs gonzaga, our last chance to get an OOC feather in the cap. Who's our pg?

PJC is our point-guard...but maybe you didn't notice that since he only played half of last nights game due to injury...

The record is now 6-2 having dropped to Gonzaga. This one could be blamed on many things but losing your PG when already down a Trier hurts even if PJC has been a scapegoat this season. Offensive struggles stood out with only 62 points scored on 38% FG shooting. That included poor 3pt shooting, poor FTs, long stretches with no points and Few did use multiple defenses on us including man and zone. On Defense that fat slug Karnowski dominated hapless Dusan over and over (9-13 FG) and no real adjustment was made because the staff was concerned Gonzaga was already shooting 33% on 3s. In general Gonzaga controlled the game from start to finish and beat vegas expectations, over performing. Kobi laid an egg, as freshmen often do, so just chalk that up.

The game's tally is below, original post has the cumulative

DEFENSIVE ISSUES
0 - Poor defensive rebounding
0 - Defense not sufficiently nasty
0 - Lauri or Ristic in foul trouble because of having to hedge 30ft from basket repeatedly
1 - Opposing player scores over and over because player assigned can't defend him and we have no answer
0 - Opponent uses screens effectively resulting in too many mismatches (PJC guarding a big, Dusan guarding a quick ____)

OFFENSIVE ISSUES
1 - Other team played a D we are not familiar with, particularly any type of zone
1 - Needed time outs at the end but we already used them all

0 - Turnovers (>15)
1 - Missed FTs (<70%)
1 - Poor 3-point shooting (<30%)
1 - Long stretches without a FG made (> 4min)
0 - Offense stalls because they're so tired from playing D
0 - Offense stalls because not enough fast break points, too much half court "grind"
0 - Offense stalls when red-hot-shooting player is inexplicably removed from lineup

GENERAL ISSUES
1 - Trier mysterious absence
*NEW* 1 - PJC's turned ankle *NEW*
0 - Stinkin Refs hate us
1 - Opponent over-performed or was underrated
1 - Its all Dusan's fault
0 - Its all PJCs fault
1 - Chalk it up to freshman mistakes
0 - We played Oregon or Wisconsin again
0 - Playing on the road in the Pac12
0 - Larry Scott

The record is now 21-3 having dropped to Oregon. RPI is 12, SOS is 41
PJC healthy, Trier in the fold to no avail. With the impressive UCLA victory in the rear view mirror the team went on to struggle for 3 straight games against awful teams (avg RPI 175). The trend continued against Oregon. Offensive struggles stood out with only 58 points scored on 42% FG shooting. That included poor 3pt shooting (29%), long stretches with no points particularly the putrid 18-point first half where we were stuck on 11 points for seven minutes!! Altman used mostly zone defense but did the unthinkable and also ran a second look (man) - that tricky Altman! On Defense Oregon was definitely hot from 3 particularly Dorsey - I think this is the 4th or 5th consecutive game Dorsey has gone off on us - hmm could it be a trend vs AZ, his onetime future school? We had Allen or PJC guarding Dorsey, with no extra help - god help us. Oregon did not attempt a single midrange shot, had just 2 offensive rebounds and won by 27. Remarkable. In general Oregon controlled the game from start to finish and beat vegas expectations (by 24 points), over performing. A couple of the freshmen (Kobi/Lauri) had subpar games, which is to be expected from time to time.

Cumulative (Oregon game issue in red)

DEFENSIVE ISSUES
0 - Poor defensive rebounding

How is Dusan Hurt Us at 1 and Refs Hate Us at zero after Butler?

Also, this is the most unnecessarily complicated way to complain about losing. It took four days to come up with a numerical representation of Oregon making a buttload of threes and us have little to no offense.

We got taken to the woodshed. We play Stanford tomorrow.
