I wonder if Las Vegas is in the discussions due to no favorability, central location, and good airline connections?

My wife has a good friend whose daughter and son in law are attorneys in SF, and live in Orinda. The attorneys at the daughter's office voted to keep working from home, so the firm is cutting their presence in SF in half. Her husband is a real estate attorney, and they expect that to be a very common occurrence. Working from home was already starting to be a big trend even before the pandemic in the Bay Area due to the awful commute.

We mentioned on Wednesday that Scott’s 12-percent pay cut still leaves his annual salary north of $4 million, which is more than twice as much as SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey makes. Wilner’s detail about Scott’s 12-percent cut being the largest cut among management is notable simply because no one is taking an especially large cut within the management division.

This lack of especially large pay cuts among management (20, 25, or 30 percent, not to mention 50 percent) is conspicuous in light of the decision to furlough several dozen employees. If pay cuts for management were 30 to 50 percent instead of being in the five to 12-percent range, a decent portion of the 79 furloughs noted by Wilner could have been avoided. A good chunk of those furloughs could have been turned into situations where employees retained their jobs but with reduced pay.

All in all, these Pac-12 cuts reflect a lack of agility on the part of the conference in a pandemic. Employees wouldn’t like pay cuts in a pandemic, but pay cuts would beat an outright three-month furlough.

"Larry is a lavish guy; he likes extravagance," said Bill Moos, the former Oregon and Washington State athletic director, who is now at Nebraska. "He runs the Pac-12 like he's the commissioner of Major League Baseball."

The Pac-12 Conference touts itself as "The Conference of Champions" and it wins titles in sports such as cross country, track and field, gymnastics, baseball and volleyball. But the conference hasn't registered nationally where it counts most in college athletics -- football.

In fact the Pac-12 feels further away, maybe than ever, to mattering on the national stage in the biggest revenue-generating sport in college athletics.

Last season, Scott's conference went 1-8 in the college football bowl season. It marked the worst postseason performance by a Power-Five Conference in history. The Pac-12 will get shut out of the College Football Playoff for the second straight season. And there are questions about the cost of doing business, and whether Scott has the Pac-12 positioned to keep pace with its peers.

Larry is what he is at this point. Just collecting as much as he can because the people that oversee him are inept. We should be saying fuck the Pac-12 presidents for not caring. But it appears that the presidents are as indifferent about sports as the Pac-12 fan base.

If you’re going to take away Larry’s ability to negotiate the next media deal, shouldn’t you also take away whatever portion of Larry’s salary that was tied to media?

If Larry has hung his hat on negotiating the last media deal but you have no confidence in him handling the next one, shouldn’t you just fire him outright?

They have to buy him out. I’m not sure if the hold up on that is due to COVID and the obviously impacted funds or if they’re seriously humoring the idea of extending his contract to negotiate the new media rights deal. These are extremely dumb smart people in charge of our universities, so it could literally go either way.

B1G headquarters are just outside of Chicago, in Rosemont right near O’Hare airport. Where rent is way cheaper than downtown Chicago and yet it’s still very easy for everyone to get to.

If Larry was the commissioner he would have had a private island built out in the middle of Lake Michigan only accessible by sea plane or luxury yacht (when the lake wasn’t iced over and inaccessible).

Pinterest paid off the penalty for canceling the lease. The Pac should do the same.

The company will instead continue leasing four existing San Francisco offices, including 651 Brannan St., and pay a one-time fee of $89.5 million to cancel the Bluxome lease. The cancellation is the strongest sign yet of how the coronavirus is reducing the tech sector’s once-voracious appetite for office space.

I'd love to see somebody check his personal financial statements. Every outside observer seems to conclude that it's hard to believe anybody would make the decisions he makes if they were purely following logic or sound business practices. Canzano: Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott is out -- and it’s about time
Updated Jan 21, 2021; Posted Jan 20, 2021

The new-age presidents and chancellors in the Pac-12 Conference decided they’d finally seen enough of Larry Scott’s tired act. They drained the marble soaking tub on Wednesday night and let the commissioner circle the proverbial drain.

The news of his ouster was scheduled for a 7 p.m. announcement. It was leaked by a member of Scott’s inner circle to a hand-picked business journal a few minutes earlier.

What? You expected the outgoing commish might release one of those ham-handed videos announcing the news to staff?

Those were the old days, of course. Scott’s apparently now more focused on his next landing spot so he picked a friendly entity instead. Between now and his official departure in June, the outgoing commissioner will spend a lot of time spinning the narrative and looking for the next sucker organization to hire him.

Don’t be fooled -- Scott didn’t leave this conference any better than he found it. It’s not nationally competitive in key revenue-generating sports. The brand is in pieces. The media-rights contracts have been lapped by peers.

Scott built the Pac-12 Network, but gutted it when it served him to do so. He trampled a lot of people. In the end, the outgoing commissioner will be best remembered as the guy who laid off dozens of his staff and handed out furloughs to others while accelerating his own annual bonus.

Some details:

-- $5.3 million in salary
-- Chartered jets and lavish hotel suites
-- A $1.9 million interest-free loan that, as far as anyone knows, Scott still hasn’t made a single payment on

Look. Understand. The proud roots of the Pac-12 go back to 1915, where it was founded in The Imperial Hotel in downtown Portland. It operated for years in humble office space in Walnut Creek, California. That is, right up until Scott ordered his one-time lieutenant Gary Stevenson to gobble up prime commercial real estate at $7 million a year in downtown San Francisco.

To a lot of you, this conference feels like extended family. To Larry Scott, the conference was the Bank of Pac-12. Minutes after the news broke, I reached out via text message to a longtime trusted Pac-12 staff member to ask, “What do I need to know?” The reply came: “He’s a (expletive).”

The point here isn’t to pile on Scott, but to make sure the sitting presidents and chancellors don’t repeat the mistakes of the past. Scott struggled mightily to connect with his own staff. He barely spoke to most of them. He ruled like an emperor and cast aside anyone who couldn’t help him, and even some who did. But Scott’s biggest sin is that he forgot that his job was supposed to be about doing everything in his power to boost the conference and serve those 12 campuses. Instead, he served himself.

The next commissioner has to be someone who wants to spend time getting to know the universities. It has to be someone who understands the daily struggles of coaches, athletes and athletic directors. The CEO Group ought to start the search by interviewing a couple of sitting athletic directors. You can outsource the media-rights negotiations to an agency, but what the Pac-12 can never again do is lose connection with its campuses.

Also, it has to stop the charade. The Pac-12 is not a media company, as Scott famously claimed. Athletes, coaches, students, alumni and athletic directors are the lifeblood of any conference. Without them, you’ve got no pulse. Whoever sits at the big desk at Pac-12 headquarters has to be interested in more than a meet-and-greet fly-by on game day, whisking out of town at halftime, leaving a trail of jet fumes.

Wednesday was a long-overdue reboot. Scott said in the release, “now is a great time in my life to pursue other exciting opportunities.” Like what? Spending that pile of cash?

Scott had to know months ago that his tenure came with an expiration date. We could all see it coming. The timing of the typical contract-extension negotiations didn’t unfold as expected. The Pac-12 presidents and chancellors who ousted Scott this week aren’t the same bosses who hired him a decade ago. Only two were even around when Scott arrived: Gene Block at UCLA and Michael Crow at ASU. Best case, Scott had to know he was facing a 10-2 deficit in the vote.

This CEO Group doesn’t view athletics as some cute sideshow that pays for itself. The bosses are more evolved now, cognizant of the lost opportunities with revenue and branding.

I don’t blame anyone today for being excited about the possibilities. With the right leadership, this conference has a chance to turn the corner and make up ground on its peers. Scott is a lame-duck commissioner. He’ll leave the post one full year before the expiration of his contract, skating away on the conference’s dime one final time.

What the Pac-12 needs to focus on now is the person who takes his seat. It must be a course correction. A hire with deep connections to university members, with a mix of humility and fresh vision. The Pac-12 will get a new boss this summer.

It’s about time.

I know Byrne isn't super popular here, and maybe it's because a lot of people look good next to Heeke, but I think he'd be a good choice.

I always felt like Byrne understood the necessity of actively raising $ and profile if you want to compete nationally, and Scott was abysmal in that area.
