So, I know very little about them. ESPN suggests they are a guard based team. All 3 double figure scorers and 4 of their top 5 scorers are 6'4 and under guards.

Hopefully Kobi hasn't checked out, b/c we could use the guard depth. All in all, you always feel good about a 15 seed matchup, but can't take it for granted.

Hopefully we just blow them out pretty early and give Kobi consitent mins vs lesser competition. Have to get him back in rhythm and get some flow. Playing 4-5 minutes in two 2-3 min stretches doesn't help get him back.

We're going to need him if our other Gs get in foul trouble or a sprained ankle or something.

If we don't do it this game, he won't be part of the rotation.

First half will make everyone of us wet our pants...typical Wildcat heart attack...not a blow out but we win soundly in the second half...

After that we cruise past Gonzaga to FF...

How fun would it be to face UCLA again and wear our "poise" shirts?

Media would make it epic...

We are the last game in Salt Lake. So about a half hour after St. Mary's/VCU ends. Call it 10pm EST on TBS.

We'll then, three fun facts about North Dakota:

(1) North Dakota holds the Guinness World Record for most 'snow angels' made in one place.

(2) Somewhere between Rugby, ND and Balta, ND is the geographical center of North America.

(3) One of North Dakota's quirkiest sports is mower racing. "Customized mowers reach speeds of 60 MPH versus the 5 MPH they might reach in your own backyard."

And here's a bonus tidbit: Lute Olson is in North Dakota's Hall of Fame.

After 3 games in 3 nights, it would really be nice to shut the door early and rest some people going into Round 2. I'm not freaked out by a slower tempo, because the big thing is to play a clean game. Against a slower tempo, not wasting possessions with TO's is really big.

That plus hammering the offensive glass and we should be just fine.

All I know is this, a team with a cause is a formidable opponent. We saw that this past week in Vegas with our cats. When we have a cause (Alford payback, sending our Kadeem the right way, revenge for a humiliating defeat in Oregon) our cats play really well.

I almost hate to hear how much love we are getting and how the road is paved for us to get to Glendale. I think it is better to remind our guys about last years first round loss and the terror in facing what seems to be a underseeded St Marys team (BPI wise) and remind them of how we can't achieve in March.

In 97 Lute wore out the lack of disrespect against those top seeds and I hope is some way the team and coaches find that same motivation (Getting Miller his first FF?) because if we play like we did this last week, I don't care who is in front of us in the west over the next two weeks
Waiting at the Rose Bowl patiently for the cats to arrive

Was going to say, they look small. Start 6'0, 6'3, 6'4, 6'7 and 6'8", and they dont appear to really use their bench too much outside of one 6'4 guard. Kenpom AdjO 200, Adj D149, 173 overall (only the five 16 seeds are worse). Probably going to be another chuck and pray 15/2 game.

Could be one of those "Brownridge" teams. Quinton Hooker can go off, and that seems to happen at times against the Cats. He's thick like Santa Clara's Jordan Brownridge, and a good all-around scorer.

Heavy dose of Kadeem.

Trying to remember what happened to Kadeem against Brownridge, and why Pitts played nearly 30 minutes and looked like he was one more defensive possession from dying because he had to guard him almost that entire second half.

Hey All,

Looking forward to our first NCAA appearance!

Since moving to D1, UND is finally starting to get competitive in sports again. First year in the FCS football playoffs, and first year making it to the Big Dance. For those who don't know much about UND, we are a huge hockey school (8 time Nat'l Champs), but are starting to catch up in other sports. We were strong in our D2 days, but the transition to D1 has taken a little time. This year UND managed to win the Big Sky in Football, Volleyball, M. Basketball and W. Basketball.

I'm no basketball genius, but the guys to pay attention to are Quinton Hooker (2016 Mid-major player of the year) and Geno Crandall. Both solid guards that can shoot from anywhere. Crandall can play reckless at times, but can get down the court quick and take it to the rim. If Hooker gets hot, he can really rack up the points. Corey Baldwin is the deep threat to watch. Avants is one of our two big guys, and he can be streaky. Carson Shanks can be streaky too; he is our biggest guy at 7 ft, but can play uncoordinated at times, and take some bad fouls.

UND - AZ connection: Some of you may not know the name, but we actually picked up a Football transfer from you guys 2 years ago by the name of Clive Georges. Not sure how much, if at all, he played for you guys, but he was really solid for us, when not injured.

UND Fun Fact: Some may know, and some may not, but one of our more famous alumni is none other than the Zen Master himself, Phil Jackson. Played both basketball and baseball for UND. Just Google Image: Phil Jackson UND.

Now, Basketball aside, get your hockey team up to D1 like ASU did! Would be fun to see some more PAC schools in the mix.

Looking forward to Thursday, best of luck and enjoy the games!

UND famous alumni: Phil Jackson
Less famous but very notable alumni: Ralph Engelstad, who owned a casino in Las Vegas and donated a $100 million hockey arena to UND. Seriously, a quick google search is worth your time. Not quite as big, but definitely nicer than most professional arenas.

I can't say I'm rooting for you guys, but good posts from opposing fans are always welcome. Thank you for posting and I hope you enjoy the dance. The first weekend is the best sporting event, period, in my opinion. Just don't enjoy it at our expense, if you can. :)

The Big Sky is a mixed bag from year to year. Sometimes, you get one of those dangerous teams with 2nd chance athletes or an overlooked player (Harold "The Show" Arceneaux, Damon Lillard), but usually you get a team that plays a slow pace, is undersized, usually with a couple of stretch post players, in the mold of Ben Howland's old "recruit to shoot" teams at NAU.

This UND team is neither of those, really. The Big Sky is my #2 conference. I am, unfortunate to say lately, a big NAU fan, and while I know my Cats and PAC well, so does Vegas, so it is the Big Sky where I have made my trip money the last couple of trips to Vegas for the conference tournament (Eastern Washington's run in 2015 was like printing money). Usually, in the Big Sky, you get that real stark difference, either a super athletic, undersized team, maybe made up of kids who could have played at bigger programs but had problems getting in, or you get the technically perfect, bland teams that squeeze possession. UND appears to be more of the latter, but they also push pace, scoring 80.5 ppg (29th nationally) and do not defend at a high level (surrender 72.8 ppg, 198th nationally). They aren't going to shoot you out of the gym like a lot of underdogs...they only have 2 shooters shooting above .400 from three, and overall shoot a pedestrian .387 from three.

Their Kenpom, for those who like the metric, suggests even one of the 16s, and all the 15s are better teams. And their high scoring was against a pretty questionable schedule, with 98 vs Crown College, 94 vs Mayville St, and 101 vs something called “Presentation College”. They they lost 5 of 7 OOC games, to North Florida (1 pt), Wright St (4 pts), Northern Iowa (8 pts), North Dakota St (17 pts), Iowa (11 pts). They won the Big Sky, splitting with NAU (won 68-63 in Grand Forks, lost 68-67 in Flagstaff). That’s worth pointing out because NAU is awful.

They are deep enough for the "altitude", running 9 players out there for more than 9 minutes a game, with a core 8 of 12+ minute players. We play in SLC every year...it really isn't a factor. They lost at Missoula and Flagstaff, so maybe altitude is an issue for them? Likely it isn't a factor.

More Kenpom...North Dakota is down at 173 overall. Their adjusted offense is 200 and defense is 149. And their adjusted tempo is rated 34th, which means they tend to want to play faster, which is perfect. Their strength of schedule was 314, so right around the worst in the nation. And their scoring is high, but when you look at opposition D, it ranks 338…out of 351.

There are those occasional 15 seed that maybe got a late start and are hot, have some athletes but were disparate parts coming together late, or are loaded from a bad conference but have some real athleticism and couldn't get out of 15 because of scheduling. This UND team doesn't appear to be one of those. They appear to be your more classic 15 seed from a small conference. Good at what they do, very good against their level of competition, but really maxing out and getting the most out of their team to be good at their level. Every team is a threat, but they don't appear to offer any additional threat that a 15 doesn't normally.

Well I know nothing about this team but man from the highlights I can say the team you played has never even heard of defense...

Unfortunately for you defense is Coach Millers addiction...if you see one of our players pulled out of rotation it will be because of poor defense...he does not tolerate sloppy D.

You missed one, pretty big, UND-AZ connection (although I guess it's more of a North Dakota connection than a UND connection) with that being Arizona's former coach, Lute Olson. He was born a half hour from UND"s campus (in Mayville ND) and graduated from Grand Forks Central.
http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/ ... ck-time-me" target="_blank

Another fun fact related to Phil Jackson playing BBall at UND is his head coach was Bill Fitch. Jimmy Rodgers was also his assistant in the early 60's. So UND does have some BBall pedigree, although it's been many years. We have had some decent DII teams, especially in the early 90's.

Now as for this game. I'm afraid AZ has too much size and muscle. UND will have to be hot from the outside in order to stay in this one I'm afraid.

The only chance I see for an upset is to get your bigs in foul trouble and have a good/great game from beyond the arc. Quinton Hooker, former Mr. Basketball from Minnesota, is our best player and will need to have a giant game. Our strength is our guard play. We don't have a lot of heighth though. With your size, you should be able to do whatever you want in the paint.. We do have a seven foot transfer from Utah State, Carson Shanks. But he's pretty lean and can be pushed around. Offensively he struggles as well. Not expecting an upset, hoping to keep it respectable and enjoy the first trip to the dance for our school.

So, I tried to register on your guys's message board but never got a confirmation email.

I hope we can use some guard depth to counter your perimeter play. Kobi Simmons has faded out of our rotation, but I'd like to see him get some time to try to use 5 man depth against your perimeter players. Kadeem Allen is our best defender, and I figure he'll be on Hooker.

Question: What does your depth look like? If you guys like to play fast, I could see us attacking with waves to try to exploit a short bench if you guys don't have a lot of depth.

If that's the case, then they must have an enrollment of at least 1 million.

Went yesterday to meet with my investment advisor. After talking market trends, the Fed raising the interest rate, fund advantages/disadvantages, ETFs, individual stocks, and all kinds of other shit that I only have a peripheral understanding of, I told him, "Well, I guess this is going to replace all the research I did for my brackets."

He responded, "Heh, I went to the University of North Dakota, so I have no idea about this March Madness thing. We only care about hockey."

To which I responded, "Uh, did you realize you guys are actually in the tournament and playing my team tomorrow night?"

What followed was a tutorial on the college basketball season, how the teams are picked for the tourney, and what chances UND had to beat our Cats. It didn't last quite as long as his tutorial on what I should do with my money, but I'm guessing his head was spinning worse than mine was at the end of our meeting.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

If a hockey game breaks out tonight, we're definitely on upset watch.

I'd take Rawle in a hockey fight over anyone.

Best to take the Fighting Hawks seriously and not look ahead to Saturday.

Twenty-two years ago to the day #5 seed Arizona travelled to Dayton, Ohio to play the #12 seeded Miami of Ohio RedHawks in the first game of the 1995 NCAA tournament. Damon Stoudamire, Ray Owes, Joseph Blair, Ben Davis, Michael Dickerson, Reggie Geary, Miles Simon, etal. didn't expect to have much trouble putting away the relatively unknown mid-major team. They were wrong. The RedHawks beat the Wildcats 71-62. Some old timers may remember the coach of that Miami team - Herb Sendek. And, by the way, Herb had a young, still wet behind the ears, assistant that year - a guy by the name of Sean Miller.

Yep, it might pay to take the Fighting Hawks seriously and hope that they don't have the next Sean Miller scheming right now on how to upset the Wildcats.

No doubt, but that game we also started at 9am our time and we had at least one player suspended. Cats will cover the 17.5 line tonight

Not Ben Davis. He was suspended.
