George Will wrote a piece in today's Washington Post basically laughing at the entire thing and discussing what fools the FBI have been.

Duncan identified three specific areas of activity for his staff at present:

Slowing, but not stopping, the processing of a “small number” of remaining major men’s basketball cases related to the federal probe of corruption within the sport. “We will keep the cases moving,” Duncan said, while remaining respectful of the pandemic-related hardships universities are facing.
Translation: it seems unlikely that Notices of Allegations will be delivered in the coming weeks while campuses are closed or in flux, even if they’re close to being completed. The major NOAs that seem likely to still be on the way: Louisville, Alabama, Arizona and LSU. Those already delivered: North Carolina State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, USC, TCU and South Carolina. Schools that likely have received NOAs but have not confirmed or denied: Creighton and Auburn.

Toward that end, Duncan said his Enforcement representatives will be watching and taking notes from the HBO documentary The Scheme, which will air March 31. The documentary tells the story of Christian Dawkins, the aspiring agent who was caught up in the middle of the federal investigation of college basketball. The movie contains some pertinent and potentially damaging audio exchanges between Dawkins and coaches Will Wade of LSU and Sean Miller of Arizona.

I haven't watched. But as it goes for for Miller, there has always been 2 camps: guilty as duck and there is no evidence. Reading Twitter reactions, im guessing the documentary did nothing to sway people in either camp

It was different than I has expected/feared....

The FBI may be just as petty and corrupt as FatFuck would like us to believe...

the legal theory that guys like Dawkins “defraud” multi-millionaire collegiate programs by engaging in behavior that would make athletes ineligible, even though the athletes are never “caught” is preposterous!

My prior take that Book was taking the money for himself was reinforced by the FBI’s own wiretaps...

A lot of Arizona fans may be offended by CSM’s repertoire of profanity as evidenced in the tape segments, but, to me, I now have a better sense how he can relate to the milieu around young athletes and recruit so effectively...

This show was not really disimilar than watching “Tiger King”, albeit, a lot less entertaining - America is a decadent society in decline; nothing is sacred here anymore....

I’m disheartened

No doubt. During the 2011-2014 period, Miller was a top recruiter and encroaching territory typically dominated by the blue bloods (e.g. had nationally top-ranked teams, beat other nationally top-ranked teams including Duke), and behind the scenes, people did not like some of his methods. Vitale is one of those guys and it also irked him that Miller's team outplayed Duke on the national stage, a program he is madly in infatuated with. He has loved watching Miller's fall from grace and has to speak about it at every opportunity. The irony is that Duke and Coach K plays the game like everyone else (yeah, Zion attended Duke with no financial incentives....) and also can get any player the program wants admitted into Duke, one of the top ten most difficult academic institutions nationally to qualify for. One would think he would be mortified about Kansas, a legendary blue blood program, and the damaging evidence revealed about Kansas and its coach during the FBI trials, yet he was been noticeably quiet. Vital is a fraud.

If the phone call is legit, you can't acquit. Only Arizona fans watched that coming away that Miller didn't pay players. Also, this board owes ESPN an apology.

What we learned from The Scheme

1. Christian Dawkins really loves some Christian Dawkins
2. Sean Miller says Fuck a lot
3. Sean Miller knows players get paid, and told Dawkins that Naz Reid was working his price by saying Arizona was offering money, as Reid was not being recruited by Arizona
4. Sean Miller knows shoe companies compensate AAU coaches, and wanted to know which coach had Nassir Little's ear, and whether Nike had locked up the coaches, or if Adidas was there. When Adidas is said to be tight with them, Miller gives a resigned "right" that might as well have been "fuck".
5. Will Wade is cooked
6. Dawkins told Book to take this stupid money that he was advising against and use it to recruit or take a vacation...not based on anything but "this is what you can do with the money, because I don't need any...I'm Gucci".
7. Book is basically in a job interview to keep cash flowing, and mentions Ayton and Miller and the crazy idea that Miller is paying $10K a month out of his own pocket in a conversation about whether Miller is down with the process.
8. Dawkins says Miller has told him often how he was tapped out paying players, yet in however many hours of taps where there was motivation to catch Miller, there is not a single tap of him saying this to Dawkins, or anything like it
9. Christian Dawkins is the smartest person in the history of the world, as portrayed in this documentary
10. I am not sure how the FBI is not guilty of entrapment. Dawkins resisted the "pay coaches to send players to the agency" model over and over again, called it stupid, throwing money away like buying strippers and hookers, and eventually gave in to keep his own funding.
11. The FBI looks awful
12. This 2 hour documentary could have been 30 minutes long and 10X more impactful by cutting out the Dawkins worship
13. They establish Book's loyalty to Miller and his access by calling him Miller's "lead assistant". That was not true before Book's problems a couple of years earlier, and really wasn't true after. "Lead assistant" is a fabrication.
14. A lot of taxpayer money got spent for nothing

Sean Miller ain't getting fired for this. If he gets let go it'll be because Admin/boosters get tired of the poor performances out on the court and not off of it.

A lingering question: when CSM was talking to Dawkins, he apparently was describing benching a player rather harshly - any clue to who/what the incident he was referring to? Or did I completely misinterpret the dialogue??

Fuegs…..they got Big Bill and your assistant on tape that was played at trial. They also got adidas saying they paid $10K to a friend for Ayton to go to Kansas (wonder why Dickie doesn't mention that). These were said under oath or in a wiretap. That is the reason that Kansas has 5 level 1 violation about 4 more than other schools. We will see what happens to Ariz but I am willing to bet there will not be 5 level 1's or close to it.

So finished tied for 3rd...….was below expectations? Not the medias or most national mags which had us fourth. Shouldn't have lost to ASU, USC, OSU and won once against Oregon. When you have a chance with a couple of seconds left against oregon at home and brick two freethrows that is a choke.

FYI, he did allude to evolving values in the assessment of college basketball coaches over the last 40 years, but, IMNSHO, he also gave a fair assessment of what will matter to CSM's tenure at Arizona moving forward....

Just a hugely disappointing season, imo. With or without the tourney happening.

Didn’t watch, but so much of what I’ve heard from him has been opinion. For instance, it’s his opinion that CSM isn’t being truthful when he says he doesn’t pay players. And I don’t take anyone’s opinion as fact. If he had any evidence that Miller was truly dirty, Miller would have already been fired.

Somebody was lying. Either Miller was lying to everyone, or the guy with the financial issues who was directing players to agents and taking cash from Ace in exchange for information was lying to the guy with the money stream he needed to convince he was doing everything he could for.

But yeah, maybe the stated opinion of the guy paying book is more credible now.

And Pitino was clean as a whistle.

And none of these other coaches, including those who texted messages about paying players, know anything about players getting paid.

Dawkins is a hero in shining armor fighting against the dark side of the NCAA. May the Force Be with Him.

Miller and Wade are what's wrong with college basketball, and Dick Vitale makes perfect, consistent sense in pointing the blame at them. The lack of evidence for this view should be condemned, since we knew it to be true the second Mark Schlabach reported that recording of Miller offering $100,000 for Ayton.

We now know that recording exists because it has been proven that Sean Miller says, "motherfucker." Are you cool with that @aplayersprogram???!!!!

Count me in the minority then I guess, but I enjoyed watching it. It presents the entire FBI investigation as a train wreck. Dawkins comes across as credible but flawed, and clearly had connections. For me it also actually portrays Book in a better light if you believe the entrapment defense. Though I have little doubt these were the only side payments Book has ever taken. That shit must go on all the time. Dawkins goes out of his way to portray the coaches as the good guys. You could argue that Wade comes off way worse than Miller, but ultimately if you go after Wade it seems like you would need to bring the whole system down. According to CSM at least, Wade has giant balls, so if he goes down I imagine he blows everything up.

Movie also tells you a bunch of stuff you should already know if you follow CBB. Kids are getting paid, primarily by shoe companies and agents who have a financial interest if the kid goes pro. Duh. The schools & coaches are fully aware of what is happening, but probably are not the ones putting cash in brown paper bags.

For me, the only way you think this is all seedy is if you still hold on dearly to the idea that college athletes are amateurs. If you are past that notion, then the rest just seems like good old American capitalism and a giant waste of tax payer resources. They point out that in the end it is hard to find a victim in all of this.

The NCAA is a joke, but you should already know this by now. If this is news to you, please delete your bdw.com account.

They are two distinctly separate issues to me.

In the case of this documentary and the FBI investigation and ESPN's report, I am fiercely pro-Miller

In the case of Sean Miller the coach...I am still supportive, because I want to win, so I want him to win. But I am certainly open to the alternatives if we don't see growth. I do feel his momentum was falsely halted by the FBI and ESPN circus, so I give him more space than some, and think this year and 2018 could have been different without all of this. But you can only go with that for so long.

Hit hard for what? There is nothing proven. Nothing. If there were , Sean Miller would not have a job right now. There’s a lot of smoke and Vitale, Schlabach, ESPN and dozens of other media types have been waiving their blankets hoping an ember will spark a flame. They want this soooooo baaaaaaddddd. But still, nothing.

Is it weird that I think they're just bored? There are no games happening. It's effectively a quiet period in the sport. But this gets their hearts racing like Bill Self in assless chaps.

We're on the same page brother. Although I hedge a bit on 2018 based on what revisionist's history on the recruiting class we were going to land and ultimately what happened to all of them (each was a catastrophe in their own right).

Ummm we finished tied for 5th.
My bad……thought it was 3rd.

To your credit we were literally one holding on to a 22 point lead vs ASU away from 3rd.

So utterly pathetic.

Think of where our heads and hopes were at back in November. We were talking about a Pac title and a deep tourney run. This team greatly underachieved.

Why bother living in the past?
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?
