If Sean is nearing the end of his time as coach here, would we replace him with another outsider? Maybe a non-issue. When Sean was hired, I don't think there were any guys connected to AZ who could even be *considered* as candidates, unless we include O'Neill and Pennell. We tried to hire Floyd (no AZ ties) and landed on Miller (no AZ ties).

I imagine you just hire the best coach you possibly can, and if he's got an AZ connection, all the better. But not having one certainly isn't a deal-breaker.

Didn't include him since there's absolutely 0 chance of that ever happening. Only way is if we pay him like $15 million a year.

One would think Luke's reputation is questionable, but from his perspective, why leave an NBA job? College jobs seem much less attractive having to deal with recruiting, the NCAA, etc.

To even entertain the thought of Pastner being our next HC is ridiculous to the point of being offensive. Every time someone suggests it I get the unbridled urge to punch their teeth through the back of their head. The guy should be selling used cars somewhere. No. Just no.

Leonard Hamilton? This dude was on the verge of being fired multiple times and took a lot of heat for consistently underperforming...just like Scott Drew. It’s always what have you done for me lately, which is awful.

Dutcher is 60 and has basically been with Fisher since 1989, he's not leaving SDSU after finally succeeding his mentor.

I think the desire everyone has is to lean out of the recruiting coach and back to more of a tactician and great in game coach. If we do move on from Miller, I agree, but I will say I'm kind of nervous about this.

I would imagine we would still be solid in recruiting regardless of who we get because of the program's history. It just scares me because I don't want to see the talent level drop off too much. I don't need 3 one and dones a year and no roster consistency. But being able to compete for and land top level talent is what separates the historically top teams in CBB from everyone else.

The funny thing is Sean Miller was not a "recruiting coach" when we hired him. He deserves all the credit in the world for his recruiting at Arizona, but the Arizona name propelled him into his recruiter reputation.

My take is Arizona should recruit 1 top 25ish guy every recruiting class and a handful of 26-100 guys who are multi-year guys. I'm confident most coaches could do that easily here. Just need to get the tactician/great in game coach part down.

Remember when we thought CSM was a tactician, great in-game coach and always did less with more at Xavier? What we didn't know is if he could recruit. My how times have changed!

Nope. That's why a strong bench of assistants matters. When Heeke overreacted and ran off Phelps, that crippled Miller (again). Jack Murphy should not be the top assistant. I think he's a good guy and a good coach. But what exactly has he done that's impressive? He struggled mightily at NAU, where the competition is weak. If you're a good recruiter or a good X & O guy, you can be decent or even good in the Big Sky. Murph did neither. Miller was so desperate for a decent assistant that he pulled Murphy because he knew he'd be loyal to the UA and knew the program. Losing Phelps was a significant loss. There needs to be some veteran assistants who can argue with Miller about X&O, personnel, etc... when the games are not taking place. Those conversations happen and dictate overall strategy involving Arizona players and the opponents.

People that say Scott Drew have no idea about him as a coach or his tourney record. He has a great team this year. The best we could do is Rick Pitino if you did not care about optics. The best coach after that is Kelvin Sampson again a tainted guy but can coach. Choo wants 1 top guy and 4 four stars......not bad if you have a team of juniors but you wont have any top 10 classes which sent us to the elite eight a couple of times.

Pretty damn slim pickins if you ask me. Donavon if he loses his job would be great but highly unlikely he will lose his job.
