This is the guy, Paul Myerberg, that dc said he liked best in terms of thorough breakdowns.

Another eight-win finish this fall would give the program its first three-year stretch since 1973-75, when the Wildcats played in the Western Athletic Conference – and long live the WAC, obviously.

I hate stats like that.

1) Teams now play 12 regular season games instead of 11
2) You can play a Div IAA team now every year instead of once every 4 years
3) There are over 60 slots for bowl games now. In 1975 there was 22

Larry Smith his final 4 years at the UA had wins of 7, 7, 8 and 9. Those first 2 the Cats were still on probation and could not get an 8th win in a bowl game.

Mike Stoops his final 4 years had wins of 8, 8, 7 and 1 and everyone was cooing what a great coach he was getting 3 7+ wins in a row.

CTG saying what. RR should be saying. beating ASSU is the goal of goals. No season is complete without it.

We didn't start beating them till Larry Smith had this attitude. Much like Kush had that attitude and when both coaches(Smith and Kush) had that, Their teams won.

We will get our ass Beat again

Merk, you have been crusty for a while now buddy! ;) Just hang in there man - the Cats will get you a few wins and maybe even a good special teams play or two and you'll be feeling better in no time! :D

First off as Merk mentioned I love this guy in regards to his breakdown of each team and keep in mind he hasn't always been kind to the UA in regards to where he has ranked us in the past. Instead of what Merk posted I liked this:

Defense: The numbers simply speak for themselves: Arizona allowed nearly 100 fewer yards of offense and nearly two fewer touchdowns per game than in 2012, not to mention just shy of two fewer yards per carry – and seeing that opponents ran the ball 531 times on the Wildcats, that average is simply outstanding. It's becoming clear – as if this hasn't been said over and over again – that enticing Jeff Casteel to come to Tucson may end up being the difference; Casteel didn't come to Michigan, as you may have heard, but has arrived at Arizona and rapidly altered the program's sense of defensive self-worth. He does it in a most unorthodox fashion: Arizona's 3-3-5 defense is attempted by only a select few other programs in the country, and perhaps no coordinator runs it better than Casteel.

And this is spot on as far as I'm concerned:

In a nutshell: There are enough issues here to keep Arizona out of the top four in the Pac-12 but enough positives to expect another step forward, perhaps into the nine-win range and an end-of-year national ranking. To get there, however, the coaching staff must address five personnel concerns: the change at quarterback, the by-committee backfield, the rotation along the defensive line, the hole at weak side linebacker and the huge decline in experience at cornerback. Hitting on three of the five issues would leave Arizona in great shape – and deserving of a spot in the top half of the Pac-12. Nailing all five would make Arizona a real sleeper in the entire conference, let alone the South Division, and could allow the Wildcats to notch the program's first season with double-digit wins since 1998.

Not one player on the All Conference team. No love for Austin Hill. I know, it all stems from the mystery at QB.

Scout's football previews:

http://cfn.scout.com/2/1435447.html PAC 12 overview

Team That'll Disappoint
Arizona State – The Sun Devils raised the bar a year ago by winning ten games. Reaching that bar in 2014 will be considerably more difficult. Yes, ASU will again score plenty of points behind the triumvirate of QB Taylor Kelly, RB D.J. Foster and WR Jaelen Strong. But in a league like the Pac-12, a fancy offense alone doesn’t guarantee prosperity. Arizona State will be more vulnerable in 2014 because nine defensive starters, and all eight of last year’s all-stars are gone. While Todd Graham did well to populate the two-deep with JUCO stars, the newcomers will need time to gel. The Devils remain dangerous, but not quite as much as a year ago, when the D was littered with seniors.

I may have run across the smartest guy on the inter web in Scott at Football Scoop.
For fun, I took a look at the teams who received zero votes in the preseason poll - somebody explain to me why Arizona didn’t get a single vote? Yes, I recognize the quarterback position isn’t settled, but word out of Tucson is that it will come together and I fully expect Rich Rod and staff to get enough out of that position to challenge some better teams. If they get consistent play from the quarterback position, then look out. Rich Rod’s in his third season and he’s a winner; 8-5 each of the past two seasons. I see 9 (or 10) wins from Arizona this year. People who have studied this stuff don’t see it this way; but have a look at the schedule. It’s never easy, but Arizona could open up with four wins - they then need to find a win or two in the middle (at Oregon, vs USC, at Washington State and at UCLA) - and then they could close with 4 wins. Again, it wouldn’t be easy but if you’re looking for a dark, dark horse (I’m talking black stallion dark), watch Arizona this season. There will be points on points on points.

I just want to go all in and believe in the RR offense and a red shirt freshman, and deep receivers corp producing immediately. If it worked for BJ, why couldn't it work for anyone that gets plugged in at QB.

There is no tangible reason why Arizona won't do what it has always done under RR and win at Utah.

If this is to be RR's season to lift the program up a notch--and I get a sense it might--he beats ASU and the cart doesn't fall off the horse in Pullman or Salt Lake.

That'll get the Cats 10 wins and a Holiday Bowl, at least.

10 wins doesn't mean much in getting into a good bowl hame. Usc had 10 wins last year and ended up in a terrible bowl game.

I'm looking forward to see how this pans out. With Denker, UA was so run heavy early on. Especially the non-con games. It wasn't until the USC game did UA actually pass more than run (only time LY). UA ended the year rushing 6 out 10 plays. Also had KC.

With Matt Scott, UA was more pass heavy. Ended year 50/50. But Scott had some experience going in. Even a Pac12 POW in 2010. If not for Scott's Concussion, think UA season would have provided RichRod's 1st ever season where his offense passed more than rushed. After that USC game, UA shifted to heavy rush (Except for Bowl game). Up to/including USC game, UA had passed more in 5 of the 8 games.

Of course, the strength at receiving corps this year. Have to exploit it. Expect to see heavy pitches and tosses to in the run game to open up the passing. Lots of D. Neal. Also think INTs will dictate how they progress during year.

Heard Charlie Ragle couple weeks ago on a radio interview saying UA will utilize Neal heavy this year. Spotlight him. That Neal will take the P12 by storm. And that UA fully plans to highlight that for recruiting top AZ HS players.

I ended up watching snippets of the bowl game last night and what stood out more than anything was the game Nate Phillips had. They couldn't cover him. If the ball was remotely catchable he hauls it in. Tough as hell. The ESPN guys were calling him the best player on the field that day.

And he may be the fourth best receiver on the team this year. Pass the Kool-Aid.

We have eight receivers that would all start on most Pac-12 teams. Pass the Kool-Aid indeed

We have a defense that is improving every year, an offensive genius in RR who has possibly the best group of receivers ever in Tucson, a redshirt freshman QB who was believed by many analysts to be one of the top incoming freshman LAST year in the Pac 12, and a veteran offensive line. Plus, look at all the big time transfers who will be taking the field this year for Arizona.

I think we are very underrated ... which is the perfect place to be. As stated above, pass the Kool-Aid! I'll have some!

With Isham gone, the 6 QBs on the roster have 0 Div I completions combined between them. Not the most experienced roster, although 2 have JC experience although they completed less than 50% of their JC passes.

BUT if one man can make BJ Denker into a record setting UA QB than I am not all the concerned.

Wall Street Journal posted this last night on CFB Student section attendance increase/decline since 2009. It requested and received attendance numbers from seems to be 79 schools. Below is their data for Pac12 (Utah, USC and Stanford not produced/provided). ZonaZoo numbers surprised me. Not for the decline but the amount of students that have season ticket but don't attend. For the nine Pac12 schools listed, WSJ data shows UA with 2nd biggest decline of their nine schools listed.

EDIT: Should note that Zoo attendance increased LY over previous 3 years. Byrne's 1st FB season in 2010. #BeTheONE. Also that UA FB attendance 2013 was lowest AVG attendance since 2003. So Zoo doing their part to help.

I think official zonazoo size listed at 9,000. Some places list ZonaZoo MEMBERSHIP at nearly 12k. ESPN Blog article last year stated UA sold 10,376 student season tickets in 2013 http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... ball-games

Overall, WSJ say studence section game day attendance in decline

2009 2010 2011 2012 2013
Arizona State 5333 7390 7228 7686 44.1%
Washington State 4730 4596 4286 5028 5718 20.9%
UCLA 3421 3442 3404 4611 5420 58.4%
Oregon State 5862 6046 5475 5686 5273 -10.1%
Arizona 5752 4326 4111 3794 4534 -21.2%
Washington 4976 4067 3746 4373 -12.1%
Oregon 3857 3720 4025 4207 3949 2.4%
Colorado 5883 5203 5540 3369 2793 -52.5%
California 1755 3393 2590 47.6%
Student attendance at college football games has slipped, according to an analysis by The Wall Street Journal of figures from about 80 colleges across the U.S. Below is average student attendance per home game, by year, and the percentage change compared with the oldest year for which the college provided data.

I don't know the current policy with sons zoo tickets but in 2007-2009 if you bought a Zona zoo pass ($100) you could get in the football game. It was something like the first come first serve up to like 9k. So it's not like it was a season ticket like adults buy now or in other programs have. Technically they are probably counting ever zonazoo pass holder, even if they hate football.

no way the zona zoo game day attendance is that low. Those numbers would mean it's half empty every game. In 2004-2007 it was full every game with 9-10k. I'm surprised that few zona zoo passes are sold too. I remember in like 2005 or 2006 there was over 15k sold.

Yeah I seriously doubt those ZZ attendance numbers as well. Regarding the ticket policies, there are two plans, red and blue. One includes basketball (still first come first served) and the other doesn't, but both include all other sporting events (except for special events, such as some of the track meets. besides the point...).

ZZ membership peaked at 12k, and I think that might have been 2010/11 (my last undergrad year). When I came in 07, the prices were 65/90, and have gradually increased to somewhere around 100/140. I think the peak occurred right before an increase of $10-15.

ZZ section was 10k until last year, when GB shifted the band one section over and re-arranged that corner. Now it is 9k. I went to all but 3 games from 07-12, and the average attendance was much closer to capacity than the numbers provided.

Jason Nimrichter with a very good, optimistic look at Solomon and our offense from allsportstucson.com.
I mean, could a guy have any more talent around him than what the situation Solomon is being tossed into? A wide receiving core that could go deeper than nine players mixed with one of the most experienced lines in the Pac-12 could give Solomon exactly what he needs to find success immediately.
Also, I'm a big fan of the game day drawings at allsportstucson.com.

http://tucson.com/news/local/shuttle-ri ... 8ef7f.html
Wildcats football fans who rode the Sun Tran shuttle to and from home games will have to get used to a new routine starting with tonight’s season opener.

That’s because a private company — Via Trailways out of Tempe — expressed interest in providing shuttle service to the games. At that point a federal law kicked in, forcing Sun Tran, which is funded by the city, Regional Transportation Authority and federal government, to stop offering the service.

A caveat attached to Sun Tran’s federal funding prohibits the bus line from competing with a private service provider.

“We’re obviously disappointed that they (Via) did that. Because we wanted Sun Tran for shuttles for our fans,” said Suzy Mason, senior associate director of athletics at the UA.

“Should we have entered into an agreement with Via, what we would have had to charge to make that work is astronomical,” Mason said, though she didn’t say how much the exact cost would have been.

Still, the company’s exploratory pitch to the UA was enough to force Sun Tran out.

Last year an average 1,500 to 1,750 people rode the Sun Tran shuttle round trip at a cost of $1 to $3. The stadium seating capacity is a little more than 56,000.

“We have people who have expressed disappointment that the service is not the same as in years past. Unfortunately we’re bound by the federal law,” said Kandi Young, Sun Tran’s marketing and communication director.

The good news? There are other options, including $5 parking at the Park Avenue Garage at North Park Avenue and East Speedway, from which the existing UA CatTran is running six shuttles, with room for 35 people apiece, to the stadium.

At the end of the third quarter, CatTran service to the Park Avenue garage will resume, along with six Gray Line charter buses that can hold 52 passengers each.

Parking will be free at the Highland and Tyndall garages (see map) for cars containing four or more people, to encourage carpooling.

Sun Tran typically used between 25 and 35 buses per game depending on expected attendance. Last year, the shuttle ran from Hi Corbett Field in midtown and Arizona Pavilions in Marana.

One rider emailed Young that because the shuttle service isn’t being offered, she didn’t keep her season tickets.

But not everyone who used to take the shuttle is disappointed. Realtor Deena Toal is looking forward to taking the new streetcar.

“This is going to be great. We can jump on the trolley, go downtown, eat. Perfect. We’re excited about it,” she said.

Sun Link — the streetcar — will have six cars on its 3.9-mile, 19-stop route before the game today, with 10-minute wait times until kickoff. A Sun Tran bus will be waiting nearby in case the streetcar is overcrowded. A seventh streetcar will be available for use if needed.

“During the game we’ll have four cars on the alignment, and we’re running 15-minute headways. Postgame those four cars will stay out running 15-minute headways. We’ll have two cars at Helen and Warren along with four Sun Tran buses staged if we start getting overloaded,” said Michael Graham, the city Transportation Department’s public-relations director.

“We’ll also have our volunteer ambassadors that will be working on the alignment to assist riders on purchasing the passes, as well as ambassadors on the streetcar to assist people with boarding and validating the passes,” he said.

Streetcar passes are $4 for 24 hours. The clock starts ticking on them when they’re validated on the streetcar; for example, if you board at 4 p.m., the pass is good until 4 p.m. the next day.

“A lot of people are very concerned, and that’s why we’re doing the CatTran shuttles,” said Greg Byrne, UA vice president for athletics. “In reality there is a lot of parking close to the stadium; it’s just not all in one centralized spot.”

From the same article above:
No. 23 Arizona (No. 26). It was a smashing debut for quarterback Anu Solomon and the new-look Arizona offense, which could simply be too much of a handful for many teams in the Pac-12.

We will end up in the top 25 this year.

UCLA took a much deserved drop out of the top 10.

why not? they have won back to back to back national titles and have beat an FBS team 5 years in a row since 2010. They'd probably be a 7-8 win bowl team in FBS right now

Oh I know. They're really good and fun to watch. It's just funny that a FCS team gets a vote in the FBS poll.

Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week 1

http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id ... s-week-1-2

6 Arizona Wildcats

Record: 1-0 overall, 0-0 conference

If Anu Solomon is the real deal -- and he looked pretty darn real in the win over UNLV -- then the Wildcats could be the wild card in the South Division. Arizona's cast of wide receivers is rivaled by few. If Solomon can mature incrementally and let those guys make plays for him, this team is going to score a lot of points.

Don't see how they could put those dick chompers from Tempe at 4? Beating a winless in the conference (bigsky) team like Weber while giving up 100 yards to there top back doesn't scream top five in the conference.

Meh. That game was over by the second quarter. From the 5-10 minutes I watched, ASU was as dominant and Weber St. as hapless as you would expect. Hard to demote them for that.
