The defense is the worst I have seen on a 5 win team EVER. Don Brown gave us some hope but this year you might as well put Sumlin's guys in there. We need players on that end of the ball and if we get them we will make a bowl next year. If we don't we will not be a lot better.

I'm not sure Nansen's our guy. I think there are coaches that might have done better. Don Brown certainly would've done better.

Gotta work on getting our D to play better but they never gave up - last 2 ASSU possessions they came up with big plays and to me that shows heart.

BTFD!
Agreed 100%

Lots of great things to build on going into next year. This offense can score on anyone and there’s plenty of playing time available on the the defense. We have to be a sleeper pick to make the title game next year.

Was at the game, that was one of the wildest ones in a long time. We seemed to get a personal conduct foul after every TD, whether it was us or ASU scoring. The middle of the field was wide open all game for ASU on those drag crossing routes, we couldn't stop that play for the life of us. ASU got 300+ yards on that single play all game long. Didn't help we got very little pressure. Was a good mixed crowd with alot of ASSU fans, lots of back and forth after every big play. That made it alot of fun. Our D came up with just enough push at the end to keep ASU from scoring.

So long as Fisch literally spends every single second of the offseason thinking about the defensive line, getting defensive line transfers and commits, then we might actually go bowling next year.

Can't imagine Nansen will make it to Christmas.

Wiley rushing for over 200 yards, ASU with 4 turnovers, and still the Cats had to take it to the end of the game.

FIsch putting DJ Williams out there end of game is another head scratcher.

I dont know football or defensive schemes at all, but I dont understand this comment. I saw a lack of consistent pressure on their QB, receivers wide open all night (blown coverages?), and very, very few defensive stops by us or punts by ASU

Also interesting to note that when we FINALLY got some pressure on their QB, we got a critical turnover. If you're getting your ass kicked up and down the field consistently all night, why not take a chance a dial up some more pass rushers?

No it wasn't. We gave up 537 yards to a team that averaged 373 yards coming into the game.
We also let a walk-on QB set a T-Cup passing record.

Nansen looks to be a pretty Conservative defensive play caller. When he decided to dial up pressure I think there were some successful plays made. I hope he learns that rushing 3 or 4 90% of the time might not be the way to go unless you have top caliber DLine talent, which we don't.

Other than that, petty solid turn around for Fisch. Definitely going in the right direction. I have to give Brennan Carroll some kudos as well. The Oline performed much better than last year despite not seeing the talent infusion that other position groups saw(sans Saviinaea). They still had their warts, but I felt they held their own. Dominated the ASU front today on the ground.

Hope we see some major transfer additions along the lines. If we do that and avoid transfer madness ourselves, I think we are a 7-8 win team next year.

Defense struggled, but the O was so much better, teams had to score more on us to win. Last year, get up 3 scores and teams could run out the clock the rest of the game knowing we weren't going to score over 20. Not this year.

We also have very little depth on D. Almost zero, until we started playing our true freshmen. And these guys would make a big play one down, followed by a huge mistake the next one. They will hopefully be better next year. We could also use some solid D transfers. The D equivalent of JDL and Cowing would help.

But bottom line, we won 5 games with a win over them. Better than anyone's expectations. Can't complain. Next year, it's 6+ and a bowl game.

Does anybody know what started the big fight with about 1 minute left, where the entirety of both rosters were going at it?

From where we were seated along the ASU sideline, I thought I saw a single ASU player approach Arizona's sideline before nearly the entire Sun Devils team crossed the field. UA had their share of ejections from that moment, but the refs never addressed the entire ASU team abandoning their sideline for a fight. And at one point, before things settled down, I was a little worried the whole game could get called off.

Can't imagine Nansen will make it to Christmas.

Wiley rushing for over 200 yards, ASU with 4 turnovers, and still the Cats had to take it to the end of the game.

FIsch putting DJ Williams out there end of game is another head scratcher.
Johnny Nansen called JDL as soon as he was in the portal and laid the ground work to get him here the following weekend with his parents. Dude made the biggest recruiting play of the off season for us.

I don’t think he’s going anywhere this off season.

All he needs is a few more guys on D to round out the freshmen he’s developed this year.

If so I think it is a very very very deep sleep.

Quit being a dick on the upper and lower boards, it's tiring.
The defense was fine. Got put in bad positions by 1) offense scoring very quick at times 2)turnover by the offense and 3) blatant penalties not being called

But sure keep talking about things you don't get
WTF. Our defense had trouble because of the quick strike offense? While I'm sure that they were tired that was because the defense could not stop them ever to get off the field. We had them in multiple 3rd and 6 or worse and they just kept getting 1st downs. I think they had over 40.

To clarify, I meant the PAC title game. Not the national playoff.

Arizona is 127th in total defense, out of 131 FBS teams.

That's right about where we started playing more freshmen.

Exactly

Fisch need a QB who could run his system. Look how much better the offense got

Same goes for Nansen. He needs players that fit his system. The older guys don't. The young guys do. Once they were ready for college football they played and the defense was way better. To call for or expect his dismissal is foolish

Nansen is staying, which is the right move. Nansen is a strong recruiter and was playing with a lot of freshman. I expect significant improvement next year, if not he’ll be gone. With that said I don’t expect every coach to return. I hope Cecil can step away without fuss and Arizona can get a strong position coach.

Nansen is one of the top 5 recruiters in the conference so he isn’t going anywhere. It’s why he was at USC and UCLA.

He just needs to stay aggressive and since he played for the Palouse posse I don’t get why he isn’t on his calls. Maybe next year he will be

I thought 3 wins would be tops, so I am elated.

As crappy as the defense was for most of the game, they did get 4 takeaways, two of which helped seal the win and they did keep the ground game in check. So I am happy with the grit the defense showed. Add some quality defensive players and we definitely should be bowling and challenging for top half of the PAC next year.

BTFD!!!

Fuck. This. Dick.

(Not you Merk)
Chief didn't get enough attention growing up. He's like every fan who was barely good enough to play blood-and-guts safety for a small mediocre high school, who lives for the Friday Night Lights bit about a team slowly walking into a stadium holding hands and conducting a stare-down, and who coached Pop Warner little guys for about five minutes. And he therefore knows everything about football coaching and shoots his mouth off criticizing higher level football that he couldn't dream of having anything to do with to anybody unlucky enough to be within earshot or who stumbles across him on the internet. For some things, "ignore" is the best policy.

WOW my eyes must be bad because it looked like more than 100 fans. Kinda like Trump saying his inauguration crowd was the largest in history in reverse. I'll take bad coaching if it results in a W against a rival.

I have to believe that going on 3 DC in three seasons doesn’t help any of the returning players.

TheGreatCatsby wrote: Fri Nov 25, 2022 5:46 pm The middle of the field was wide open all game for ASU on those drag crossing routes, we couldn't stop that play for the life of us. ASU got 300+ yards on that single play all game long. Didn't help we got very little pressure.
To comment on the frustrating ease of ASU’s passing game through large stretches of the game, it’s been a few years or more since I’ve been this emotional at a sporting event. On defense it was clear our game plan was to throw bodies at RB Valladay to keep their star back from taking over the game. Where our defense got caught off guard was against Bourguet’s arm. By the second quarter I was vocally angry at just how well ASU was moving through the air. Elijhah Badger is the Sun Devil’s most dependable wideout; the rest I’ve watched plenty of this season are often out of position and drop passes. Yet against Arizona, EVERYTHING thrown their way is caught – EVERYTHING(!), no matter how unlikely. I know it’s a rivalry, but part of the reason Arizona has lost so many recent Territorial Cup Battles is because the maddening version of ASU we draw is a determinedly nearly perfect version of themselves. At one point in the third quarter Bourguet was 25/30 in passing and I was stomping in the bleachers and screaming (SCREAMING!) “How is EV-RY PASS a CATCH!?!? An EIGHTY FIVE percent completion rate! From BACKUP!”

(The math is actually an 83% completion rate.)
And I said, ‘That last thing is what you can't get...Nobody can get to that last thing. We keep on living in hopes of catching it once and for all.’ Jack Kerouac, On The Road

So by my count there are currently 80 bowl eligible teams and 84 slots in 42 bowls with only conference titles to go... so can we still get invited?
