The answer to this thread title has become so painfully obvious that I’m thinking of changing it to a statement.

A third of the people still there are asleep.

As the person who started this thread the year we won the P12 south, I vote to just shut her down. Since then, I've ditched my season tix and watched maybe 10 minutes of the Utah game from the comfort of my home theatre. -Bad Fan.

It's because U of eh football sucks, has sucked for over 100 years, and will continue to suck for another 100 years. Ok ok, you can have 1998...but don't ask stupid questions. This town is filled with old people and college kids, and no one will spend 3 hours sitting still. If U of eh won 9+ games a year, you MAY get people to come to and stay for the games. If the U of eh basketball program suddenly stopped winning, fans wouldn't go there either. But Tucson will never be a football town, so get used to it little brother.

ASU fans talking smack about football is rather silly. You suck as well and have historically been pretty much the exact same as us. We both are mediocre. Yet we still own the all time series...

Not sure why I bother, but just check out the attendance statistics. Use whatever metric you like. Doesn’t look good for little brother ASU or frankly most of the Pac-12. With a metro area population literally 5 times the size of Tucson, ASU outdrew Arizona by 5000 fans. Your attendance has been so bad, they’ve slowly “upgraded” your seating capacity from 73000 down to 54000. Congratulations. Now go home. Where all your so-called fans are on Saturday nights.

2018 Average Home Attendance:

Washington - 69,816

UCLA - 57,492

USC - 55,565

ASU - 51,745

Oregon - 51,456

Utah - 46,716

Arizona - 45,356

Colorado - 44,587

Cal - 40,907

Stanford - 38,514

OSU - 34,735

WSU - 29,727

Sweet, haven't had one of these in a while. Reminds me of TOS days. But yea I don't understand the smack from ASU fans either. They have the same winning percentage as us historically I think. They've also been a much worse basketball, baseball, and softball program for the last 40 years. I hate ASU as much as the next guy, but the sports superiority thing (rooted largely in semi-racist tropes of southern Arizona) is puzzling. You do you though boo.

The people complaining about the fans being the problem (Machina) need to look no further that at Adia Barnes on how to build a program, engage the community, get the athletes on social media promoting themselves and the program and how to work your ass off.

We get a football coach who understands this and uses the Barnes model.... the fans will show up.

It's never, ever the other way around.

We lead the conference in attendance in men's basketball, baseball (post Hi-Co move obviously), and softball. At this rate Adia is literally a year or two away from women's basketball being added to this list. We are the largest metro area in conference with no pro teams and treat University Athletics as the big show in town always. Football just desperately needs a guy that gets it like Adia does and can win more than he loses. The recipe isn't really that hard. Rich had the latter point down, but not the former. Sumlin has neither.

Yup. Just get a coach that does the kind of things she does and we'll be selling out most football games within a year or two.

No, your daft insistence that throwing good money after bad play and coaching will make both go away, to the absolute ignorance of program-building precedent in every other sport as well as football, is the only thing beyond stupid.

This argument of yours has been proven beyond wrong. Nobody is ever going to be convinced by it. Stop clinging to a dead horse before its disease-infested carrion kills you too.

But the money we had got us a coach who was at Michigan and a coach who was at an SEC school. It’s more about our choices and leadership.

Adia didn’t have to come to the UofA and most top assistants wouldn’t take that chance but like Lute she saw the potential and charged full steam into the project of rebuilding the program.

It was not done with a please come out first so you can help me sell the programs to recruits but rather Adia will sell what it will look like to recruits and she made it happen.

What we need is an AD who has a vision of what we can be and then can identity a coach who fits our needs(can recruit, develop and connect with the alumni). We have neither of what we need in our AD and head coach.

While women’s b-ball and football are largely different as you pointed out (especially in the difficulty of rebuilding where you need many more players) , the blueprint on how to do it is clearly evident in how Adia has gone about it

Sumlin is due $3.5M of base salary this upcoming season from Arizona.

The AD is spending $66M on renovations to Arizona Stadium and building the Davis Sports Center over last season and this one.

Cats are predicted to finish 10th in the PAC and the program is in a downhill spiral.

Sumlin was in the bottom half of FBS this year.

And now we are losing Murray and money is a factor.

If you dont think attendance leads to more money for the team and department I dont know what to tell you.

Biggest issue money wise is the TV contract which is abysmal. That revenue doesn’t rely on the win/loss record and we are a -30m a year from the SEC snd the B1G

Its actually not when you realize that games on Fox ABC and espn draw less than half the viewers the SEC and Big Ten do

Well then it should be an easy fix to get us the extra 30m that the SEC Just have to each program. Our revenue from all networks is 20m. Not sure what you are saying but just look at what a Michigan St did yo get Tucker as the imbalance we face

The issue is that on average for games on espn abc or Fox, the PAC12 games draw half the audience of Big Ten and SEC games in the same windows. So by value our TV deal is actually really good

Different way of looking at it zi guess. Viewership might be up if we had great USC and UCLA teams. There just is no interest in mediocre teams and it is just getting worse and the playing field is tilting further to the other P5 conferences.

All of them are providing a significant amount of extra revenue snd these programs are really improving their assistants and analysts with that money. An extra 10k to our games might give us about 250k in revenue and might mean a couple million over the course of the season but it doesn’t move the needle like the revenue from TV

The SEC is about to sign a monster contract with ESPN for over 300m a year. We have to wait for almost 5 years to negotiate a new contract. By that time we will be do far behind the SEC and the B1G it probably won’t matter.

The contract was too long, I will give you that. But on a per view basis the PAC12 earns more from Fox and espn than the SEC and Big Ten

Well that won’t make up the huge deficit we will operating under. If Scott had done his job every program in the conference would have better assistants and better facilities (OK, maybe not Oregon)

Larry Scott has many flaws but the lack of demand for PAC12 football on tv is not one of them. This issue predates Scott

Do you think Scott has maximized our revenue opportunities TV wise. I guess that would align with the presidents keeping him but while they might be in alignment with your thoughts, most other revenue analysts think he has done a horrible job maximizing opportunities in our behalf

No I dont think he has reached the max but I think he got really close when the deals with Fox and espn were signed. The issue is he had the deal go so long.

But as I have said and I have the numbers to back it up there just isnt much demand for PAC12 football and basketball on TV

His spending is a bigger issue to me after seeing the numbers for tv ratings.

We will see how it does this year if Oregon can be a title contender

Arizona Athletics is facing a minimum of a $7,500,000 short fall this academic year. While a major reason for this is the cancelation of the PAC-12 and NCAA tournaments, that is not the entire shortfall. This shows why ticket sales are so important. Cannot buy out Sumlin or Miller likely.

A MESSAGE FROM DAVE HEEKE

Dear Wildcat Club Member and Friends of Arizona Athletics,

Arizona Athletics is committed to staying connected and engaged as we continue our work to support nearly 500 student-athletes and provide opportunities for them to be academic, athletic and life champions as we move forward through these trying times of the COVID-19 global pandemic. We have worked every day to provide our student-athletes with key academic, medical, mental health, strength and conditioning and nutritional resources. These new challenges have strengthened our athletics department’s unity and resolve, and I have been inspired by our staff’s team approach to this “new normal” while maintaining day-to-day operations.

Part of our Wildcat Way of life is centered around one of our greatest resources: the people of our athletics department. Led by our Human Resources staff, Arizona Athletics has remained focused on employee health and wellbeing. We’ve diligently guided staff through family wellness resources, work from home transitions and virtual staff fitness sessions among other important initiatives. We have a tremendous team of staff members who work tirelessly to support our athletic programs, and their health and safety remains a key priority.

As Arizona’s Director of Athletics, I am working side by side with the leadership of the University of Arizona, the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA to ensure our department is in alignment on key decisions regarding health and safety, education, legislation, finances and the future of college athletics. We’ve already seen some of this group’s work with the eligibility relief vote for spring sport student-athletes, which I believe is critical to fulfilling the student-athlete experience for these tremendous young men and women. This local, regional and national collaboration will continue to be a guiding force that will propel us into the future.

These trying times have created unprecedented economic hardships that have deeply affected us all. We are already feeling the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and without question, these will be felt for years to come. As of today, we are anticipating a revenue loss of over $7.5 million in this fiscal year alone. This loss stems from a reduction in PAC-12 and NCAA revenues, other spring sport revenues, loss of ticket sales, as well as a decline in other revenue projections. Our department has taken significant steps to reduce and freeze spending to mitigate these reductions for this fiscal year. I have been working with a team of peers, our Executive Team, and campus partners to create forecasting models for next year. Based on these models, we must have a plan for reduced spending in a variety of administrative, operational, and sport program areas, and aligning future compensation decisions with university guidance and planning. We have continued to honor our scholarship and academic commitments to our student-athletes and are working to protect our commitment to our employees. We fought to support the extension of eligibility for student-athletes in spring sports and even in these difficult times, it was absolutely the right thing to do. Our athletics department anticipates the cost of this extension of eligibility to be approximately $600,000 for the next fiscal year, and your continued support of Arizona Athletics is crucially important during this time.

In order to provide maximum payment flexibility for our fans, we extended our Wildcat Club and season ticket renewal deadline to June 1, and offered payment plans through August 1 and September 1. Additionally, we have offered fans a credit option for canceled spring sport season tickets. This credit can be applied to tickets next season, or to your current Wildcat Club renewal, or as a direct gift to the sport. We know the COVID-19 pandemic is not only a medical crisis, it is presenting many of us with significant challenges. Therefore, we will be as flexible as possible to continue your active involvement.

Arizona Athletics remains dedicated to living the Wildcat Way and providing a championship student-athlete experience. We will continue to be an important part of the University of Arizona and the Southern Arizona community. Thank you for standing with us during these unsettling times as we move forward, together! Stay safe and healthy.

I dropped my season tix prior to the last season. I made it to one game, we lost miserably.

I don't know why anyone would want to go to a tailgate or a game without a vaccine, unless they already had COVID_19.

Some people know the risks and feel it is worth it. I only know my personal position on it though. If things are trending down and there are proper safety measures in place I will go. I don’t think I will be on the mall beforehand at this point but who knows what the case will be in August

This is what I think is gonna happen.

You will not have a specific seat even if it is printed on your ticket. It will be GA in your section. Groups will be spread out to allow distancing in the section.
Concessions will be limited to allow for the safety of the game day staff and fans. Quicker transactions will need to take place to allow for distancing in lines. I hope that you will be allowed to bring in your own items. No vendors will be walking the aisles.
Masks will be required anytime you are in the stadium not in your seating area.
Temperature checks when entering the stadium. Above 100.X will not be allowed in.
Special instructions for entry and leaving the stadium
Bathroom lines will be marked to allow distancing.
Reduced number of tickets sold, which for Arizona obviously won’t be an issue

These things happen or similar things I will go. If not I won’t and the UA can have my money since they desperately need it.

You have no idea what is going to happen.

NONE

What you want to happen, what you think should happen... that's all good. But that's all anyone can say. Again, anyone saying what they think is going to happen is an idiot.

Won't do any good if you already had it. 8 sailors on that aircraft carrier caught it again. Herd immunity is not working, yet anyway.

We really don't know that for sure given the accuracy of the tests, false positives/negatives. The Abbott test is less than 50 percent accurate.

I cant have any insight into what the AD is putting in place right? Like I did not hint at the alcohol sales way before anyone else. Oh wait I did.

I gave my thoughts on what I think the department is gonna do about fans in the stands if that is allowed. I bet I am very close to being right. But I know you wont back up your talk

Back up my talk? I'm saying I don't know... just like you don't know... and I'm actually very close to the UofA situation. What is there to back up?

I thought this board was all about people giving their opinions. He didn't say "This is what is going to happen". He said that is what he thought would happen. Do feel free to share your own thought on what things might look like if fans are allowed into the stadium. But calling someone an idiot just because of his conjecturing? Please.

Machina gives everyone enough opportunities for people calling him an idiot over things he asserts are facts, when they are actually conjecture. But I do think he deserves a bit of a break for just thinking something might happen. We all do the same thing when we make predictions on UA's win/loss record.

Hard to give him any benefit of the doubt when he's stained boards for a decade.

It just doesn't make any sense to have any reasonable expectations right now about what is going to happen with collegiate sports 4 months from now.

What Machina lays out sounds reasonable... and possible.... but you know what else seems reasonable and PROBABLE .... football locker rooms acting as a major incubator of the COVID-19 virus.

Anyone can speculate all they want right now.... but anyone telling you they have a good idea of what's going to happen is full of shit.
