It will be interesting to see what happens if we get down 10-14 points and Rodriguez/Tate is forced to pass more to get us back in the game. I think they're going to need to pass more on Saturday regardless but we've gotten off to fast starts the last 3 weeks and could afford to run, run, run. Mostly because it was working but the game circumstances also lent themselves to keeping it on the ground.

Here's some important stats for the homers:

3rd down conversion defense:
Wazzu 4th-24.35%
AZ 122nd-48.11%

Yeah that definitely needs to tighten up on our side, but it's been much better then in the recent past. What was that number the last couple of years, 99.98% or thereabouts? They just need to keep playing hard as they have been and dial up a few more of those 3rd down stops . . . Passing defense is still a big concern, but run defense has been relatively solid - this being Leach and Wazzou, the secondary has to step up big.

It's still hairy, but not as bad. There's no question in my mind that this defensive staff is light years better than the old one and the kids are playing better.

Here are some other "important" stats

Rush Yards per attempt
AZ 3rd 6.5
Wazzu 127th 2.9

Pass Yards per attempt
AZ 41st 7.7
Wazzu 72nd 7.0

However if you look at solely the last three games when Tate has played U of A is at 11.1 yards per attempt which would be 2nd in the nation.

Actually it isn't any better...

AZ 3rd down defense:

2016-127th
2015-114th
2014-74th
2013-63rd
2012-90th

we're just as bad as we ever have been on 3rd down defense.

We also have to squeeze the zones better, which means forcing disruption of route and giving ourselves a yard or two to tackle. Easier said than done.

yeah that would be interesting to see what our D has done the last 6 years against 3rd and 8+ yards. hell the worst would be 3rd and 12+. i bet we give that up 80% of the time.

So don't address the stats I gave, doesn't fit your narrative that you are so much better and smarter than the rest of us.

3rd down defense conversation percentage is a worrisome stat for sure, but that doesn't tell the entire story of the defense. The stats I gave point out a better story of the entire offense going into this game.

What about offensive 3rd down conversation percentage? More less or same importance as the defense stat?

U of A 18th 46.25%
Wazzu 54th 40.00%

I'm not a football guy, but maybe, just maybe the corners shouldn't sag 10-15 yards off the WRs on 3rd and long.

Like Lou Holtz used to say, the only thing the prevent defense prevents is victories.

Mike Stoops was the worst. Remember he would go into the prevent defense start of the 4th quarter?

Remember the Oregon game? Students were already climbing down from the bleachers getting ready to rush the field. Arizona was up 24-14 in the 4th quarter. Masoli tied the game with a TD pass with 6 seconds left, then won in double OT.

Pretty sad long walk up the bleachers for those students. Nationally televised game too.

He's going to leave with Tate having two more years? Sure he is. How often does a Pat White or Khalil Tate come around? He's also getting the indoor facility. He's got a big pay day coming and will probably get another extension TY. I think the South Carolina experience taught him that it's not always about the money. Who you work for is a big deal.

We're struggling to draw fans and I don't see how that's RR's fault at this point. If our shitty fan base (I see you scumdevils86) isn't going to come out and watch a guy like Tate, then changing coaches to somebody we've never heard of isn't going to change anything in regards to fans showing up.

As for South Carolina, they treated RR like he was the second choice. RR caught on right away and said Alpha, Mike, Foxtrot, to the South Carolina AD. Before you say Tennessee, keep in mind that he and Butch are boys and the new AD is going to fire Butch but hire RR? Seriously doubt it. RR and Butch have the same agent so cross Tennessee off the list. Arkansas? Ole Miss? Please. He can also call Greg Byrne and ask him how much he likes Alabama? Yes, those jobs pay well but that doesn't mean it's where you want to live.
