Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
Seems like a decent athlete not burning speed but prett good. Is La Jolla Day County any good or play in a decent conference?
Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
Braxton got an offer from Florida today! Once a again RR is ahead of the game when offering these guys before the big boy schools!
Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
Based on Rod Smith's tweet "We just got better today #recruiting #gunslinger" and Braxton's of "Today will be a good day!" I think we got Braxton to commit

Now Burmeister said he is announcing today. Was on campus for Colorado and I don't believe he has visited elsewhere

Huge news, welcome to the family Burmeister! Let's just hope an SEC school doesn't hire a family member.
Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
RR has been on the 4 stars before anybody else but has had a hard time keeping them. Lets hope the dominos start falling the 4 stars keep rolling into T-Town after visiting here.azgreg wrote:Can't be, he's not a 2 of 3 star.btfd16 wrote:Now Burmeister said he is announcing today. Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
UF and UA only 2 offers so far. Let's see how committed he becomes when the other offers start piling in.
Just a side note, I hate the term "commitment" until the NLJ is signed.
It's more like a kinda-maybe thing until then.

Seems like the earlier you commit, the less likely you end up at the school

Braxton Burmeister team - La Jolla Country Day is 4-6. His stats:
Passing 2,117 yards and 19 TDs. He does have 13 INTs.
172 cmp / 329 Att - 52.3%
Burmeister seems to a a good threat with his feet. Rushed for 469 yards and 10 TDs on the year.

Just for comparison Anu's high school stats at Gormon, had a fantastic senior season but don't know about the rest:RazorsEdgeAZ wrote:Braxton Burmeister team - La Jolla Country Day is 4-6. His stats:

In three years, he’s passed for 7,215 yards and 101 touchdowns, including completing 65 percent of his passes last fall in throwing for 2,770 yards and 41 touchdowns with just two interceptions.

Darnay Holmes is going to strongly consider UA and is going to be an elite prospect.

Ryan Kelley will be a 5 star before its all said and done. Regardless of their interest in him, UA and ASU don't have much of a shot at this kid. ASU has been on this kid for a while, but I think he ends up at UCLA or A&M. An SC offer could shake things up a bit.
Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
I think Tate Martell goes TAMU and Tua will likely go SC imo.

also made Keyshawn Jr.'s list. not sure how to embed. I love seeing our name up there with schools of that caliber. also makes it sweeter when ASU is not up there

Austin Jackson: we have any chance with him?

It's really early, but when you have a kid that talented it's hard to keep him. Good thing is his high school isn't one that favors either in-state school.Puerco wrote:Austin Jackson: we have any chance with him?

Guess RichRod is planning on staying a while, so although his son may never see the field, it's worth a scholie to keep RR around.

My great quarterback, Rhett Rodriguez, who will be my first ever 4-year starter, has just committed to play for the University of Arizona in 2017. Rhett is a straight A student snd a true team leader. Even though his father, RichRod is the UA head coach, this is still an amazing story. Rhett has thrown 37 TDs with only 5 interceptions and nearly 5000 yards, and his senior season is still coming. This is a great family and I'm very pleased that things have worked out this way. Rhett has always wanted to play for his father.

I don't mind this at all as some might.. Will know the system more than anyone and make people better regardless if he's scout team. Congrats Rhett

Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
I think it's great he gets to play for his dad; but if he is getting a full FB scholarship, then I disagree. He gets a tuition waiver anyway, and I am pretty sure RR can afford a dorm or an off-campus apartment.Merkin wrote:Guess RichRod is planning on staying a while, so although his son may never see the field, it's worth a scholie to keep RR around.

If RR stays after next season, though - Rhett would be an additional insurance policy to stick around.
Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
RichRod does get a tuition waiver but IIRC he would be required to pay state taxes on the difference between the tuition paid and the actual tuition cost. It's not a full waiver, it's a deep discount. Plus there's also things like books and such. If Rhett is going to be a part of the team then he gets treated as part of the team including a scholie and the rules attached to it. If he's on the team with dad paying the freight then in my opinion that actually looks more like favoritism.

Before we get any further into this... everyone on the board is assuming Rhet has been offered a full FB scholarship. I have not seen that specifically reported, azpenguin wrote:RichRod does get a tuition waiver but IIRC he would be required to pay state taxes on the difference between the tuition paid and the actual tuition cost. Okay, I just read the story in the Star and see that he received an offer on Tuesday.azpenguin wrote:RichRod does get a tuition waiver but IIRC he would be required to pay state taxes on the difference between the tuition paid and the actual tuition cost. Are you serious? Rhett should get a scholarship so RR does not have to pay state taxes on the tuition benefit, or have to pay for books, room, & board? RR's benefit package includes specific provisions to defray the costs of college tuition for his kids. Secondarily, NOT giving him a full ride gives the appearance of favoritism if he is on the team? Is that because of RR's affinity for walk-on's? Plenty of kids are on the team without having a scholarship, and some of them actually play.
That all skirts the real issue. If Rhett is a legitimate (or even borderline P12 prospect) - then that is fine. From what I can tell, it appears that he is not... I cannot even find him in most of the prospect databases. Where he is listed, it appears he does not have a single other offer. If his name was John Doe, would we be cool with him getting a scholie?
On the surface, I do not see how you can argue this isn't nepotism, plain and simple. If Austin Miller had been a similar 'prospect' in BB, does anyone actually think he would have been offered a BB scholarship?
Sorry, I guess I am an outlier in this one. I am not down with it, based on what we know.

RR doesn't give scholies to kickers or punters until they earn it. Both Riggleman and Skowron, two of the better ST players UA has had, didn't get scholies until they were juniors.
Rhett is listed at 6'1", sure doesn't look like it in those images.
RichRod makes $2.2M per year, don't think he worries about paying taxes on fee waivers.

Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
No, I'm with you. I think it's BS and I've been wary of this situation coming to pass for a couple of years. All I can think of is Dan and Cody Hawkins at Colorado, or the little league coach who banished me to the outfield and gave first base to his drooler of a kid. On the other hand, it's hard to begrudge the father/son thing if you're privileged to have the opportunity. So long as he doesn't play over a more qualified player then I suppose there's no harm. It's one scholarship and RR and Rhett are lucky enough to enjoy the perk of their station in life.Harvey Specter wrote:Okay, I just read the story in the Star and see that he received an offer on Tuesday.azpenguin wrote:RichRod does get a tuition waiver but IIRC he would be required to pay state taxes on the difference between the tuition paid and the actual tuition cost. Re: 2017 recruits/commitment thread
This is a new situation for Arizona. I don't think we've had a head coach before with athletic children that were college age. It happens at a lot of other schools including that place in Tempe. Coach Kush gave his kid a scholie to place kick. Although little Danny was capable I think there were better ones available. In the mid 80's the ASU quarterback coach gave his kid a scholarship and he ran the scout team for four years. Rhett certainly has great stats but yea with the talent that he's going to have in front of him, he is definitely going to have to prove he belongs on the field. Other than that, I don't have a problem in the world with it.
