98 Roc Russell

Russell is a 6-0, 233, Senior defensive lineman from Orange Park HS. He is not on the online roster, but he was on the printed roster given out at the spring game. Russell was one of 9 players who practiced during the spring, but have not been added to the online roster. What is going to happen to these players including Russell? It is all driven by the roster limits and I was unable to find the limits online.

There are different roster limits for the spring, fall camp, and during the season (and I would really appreciate if someone could show me where to find them). Our coaching staff tries to maximize those limits in order to get the best look at walk-ons. Russell and the other 8 players got an extended tryout for the team during the spring and a chance to be invited to fall camp or even rejoin the team during the season.

My guess is that Russell won't be on the roster when fall camp starts and the 25 new Freshman are added to the roster, but who knows? Parker Zellers has already proven an undersized D-lineman can find a place on this team.

98 was the last great Arizona football team. They finished 12-1 ranked fourth in the nation and may have gotten a playoff berth under today's system. They are the standard that this staff is trying to build back up to where Arizona is competing for championships.

98 is also the total number of tackles for a loss the Wildcats made last year. 19 different players had at least one tackle for a loss for a total of 356 lost yards by our opponents.

Roc Russell and Scooby Wright. Come on now, that is a great combo and candidates for the all name team. Dude needs to get on the field although he is way to small

Believe the FBS limit is 105 during:
17.9.2.1.2 Limit on Number of Participants—Bowl Subdivision. [FBS] In bowl subdivision football,
there shall be a limit of 105 student-athletes who may engage in practice activities prior to the institution’s
first day of classes or the institution’s first contest, whichever occurs earlier
. (Adopted: 1/11/94, Revised:
12/15/06)
17.9.2.1.2.1 Replacement of Student-Athlete Who Voluntarily Withdraws. [FBS] A student-athlete
who has voluntarily withdrawn from an institution’s team, has departed the practice site
and no longer will engage in any preseason activities may be replaced with another student-athlete
without including that individual in the institution’s 105-participant preseason practice limitation.
(Adopted: 1/10/95)
17.9.2.1.2.2 Replacement of Student-Athlete Due to Injury or Illness. [FBS] A student-athlete
who sustains an injury or illness that prevents further participation in preseason practice activities
may be replaced with another student-athlete without including that individual in the institution’s
limitation on number of individuals who may participate in preseason practice. The replaced studentathlete
shall cease participation in all athletically related activities (including team meetings and film
review) and shall not resume participation in athletically related activities before the institution’s first
day of classes or first contest, whichever occurs first. The replaced student-athlete may continue to receive
preseason practice expenses. (Adopted: 1/17/09)
17.9.2.1.2.3 Exception—National Service Academies. [FBS] There is no limit on the number
of student-athletes who will be attending a national service academy and who may engage in practice
activities prior to the institution’s first day of classes or the institution’s first contest, whichever occurs
earlier
Outside of this period don't think there is a limit regulated by NCAA (although P12 or school may invoke limit) during season.

P12 regulates travel squad size (70 visiting):
q. Squad Limitations.
For Conference games not involving traditional rivals, the visiting team squad limit shall be 70 studentathletes.
The home team shall have no squad limit, but only 70 student-athletes may be housed at a hotel
the night before the game. For Conference games involving traditional rivals, both the home team and
the visiting team shall have no squad limit and each may house up to 70 student-athletes at a hotel the
night before the game. The Council may approve waivers to this rule for games which involve unusual

Well, I was wrong. Roc Russell made the official roster.

Boy, I'd like to know his story. Walked on, played spring ball, and then made the team as a 230 lbs defensive lineman after being a safety and wide receiver in high school. Interesting. Hope he purchased the EMFM food plan.
