Special Teams

Which unit has to replace the most starters? Special teams. Drew Riggleman and Casey Skowron have given us a solid kicking game for the past 3 and 2 years respectively. We bring back a experienced long snapper, but will have to replace both kickers and our holder (which has been Riggleman for 3 year).

Place kickers (2)
Josh Pollack (RS So) (1 xpt and 2 k/o against NAU)
Ollie Graybar (RS Fr)

Punters (4)
Josh Pollack (RS So)
Ollie Graybar (RS Fr)
Jake Glatting (RS So)
Matt Aragon (RS Fr)

Long Snappers (3)
Nick Reinhardt (RS So) (Did all the kicking snaps last year and punting snaps for 2nd half of season)
Nathan Eldridge (RS Fr)
Donald Reiter (Fr)

So, for our returning specialists we have Nick Reinhardt and have to replace everyone else from last year. Funny enough, he may even be pushed for his position. Nathan Eldridge is a true center who has done long snapping and may get a chance on special teams. He outweighs Reinhardt by 50 lbs.

Entering camp, Josh Pollack is expected to be our best kicker and punter, but Coach Rod has said ideally he would like to split the duties.

Kicking - Pollack, Graybar
Punting - Pollack, ? (not a lot of quality punting analysis out there)
Longsnapping - Reinhardt, Eldridge, Reiter
Holder - unknown, but I will guess Zach Werlinger a walk-on QB who has been on the team 3 years.

Graybar is not in the team so I'm told. You forgot Edgar Gastelum. He will probably be doing kick offs.

Graybar is still on the roster and Gastelum hasn't been added yet.

If Graybar is leaving the team we will be desperate for a back-up kicker. Hope there is a good kicker currently managing girl's soccer.

The roster isnt current as of yet. Graybar quit the team when they picked up Gastelum from Arizona Western. The back up kicker is Gastelum.

Allegedly....no. He knew he couldn't beat out Pollack or Gastelum. His Dad is a teacher for UNLV....maybe he'll want to play there......allegedly

Any of the kickers or punters scholarship players or do they have to wait and earn it as juniors like Riggleman and Skowron did?

Pollack is the only K/P with a scholie.

A brownie point for Chief. Graybar is now removed from the official roster and Gastelum has been added.

Good summation of where we are for special teams from Jason Bartel at SBN.
Key losses: Casey Skowron, Drew Riggleman, Jose Romero, Jared Baker

Key returners: Josh Pollack, Nick Reinhardt, Tyrell Johnson, Nate Phillips, Samajie Grant, Shun Brown

Key newcomers: J.J. Taylor
In the story, but not included in the summation above are other key players: Edgar Gastelum (JC walk-on back-up kicker) and Matt Morin (holder).

I like the use of two guys back to recieve punts.

It seems to make the kick coverage team pause just a bit because they're not sure which guy is getting the ball. I think they return at least one for a TD this year. If Taylor is able to catch some kicks with room to move then look out.

Any kickers or punters coming in next season?

Wondered why Pollack was kicking off.

Yea, that it why we have been outscored like 200 to 58 over the last 4 games. Cry your tears RR in the 1.5m per win we are giving you

That's because we lack a running game, and passing with our Top 2 RB's & QB's injured. That happens all the time you know. Keep up the hate

Keep telling yourself we would be better. Living in denial is a special thing to posses.

With our starters we rang up 15 against BYU. We were healthy. This program sucks and it's because of RR. Besides, Grant had 113 on 16 carries. That should work

They still do the rodeo shit. That's why Glatting has a 37 yard average. RR doesn't want booming punters with long hangtimes out there anyway. It's not his MO.

If de Beer has been practicing a lot with a football, why not try him out? A football is smaller in the waist and pointier on the tip with a thicker cover and less air than a rugby ball. If he's already been booting footballs, he's probably used to the difference.

I don't care who we find to punt as long as we find someone who long-snap the damn ball back there.

He's just the one responsible for recruiting the kids he decides to put out there kicking those punts.

Just as broken as "it's on the players to perform" and such similar statements. You turn off your record, I'll turn off mine.

But I mean honestly, where is someone supposed to find a five star DL who wants to star in the 3 man line?

Oh wait, we're talking about punters.

You mean hold the guy actually kicking the ball accountable like RR did? I believe he tried 3 different guys

But this argument is silly since you had our record at 4-7 about this point before the season right?

Two things there.

It's RR job to find the talent all over the field. The fact he hasn't (on special teams, elsewhere) is on him. That's it. There's nothing more to be said. Anything else is desultory bullshit.

Point two. Our appropriate record with Dawkins at the helm would have been probably 4-8 (2-1, 2-7) or 5-7 (2-1, 3-6) with I would guess an 80% or better probability.

But our coach misevaluated that one too; a trend, one might say. That is, his ability to misevauluate.
