Tate is a 6-2, 215, Sophomore QB from Inglewood, CA. Initially scheduled to redshirt last year, the QB situation forced him to play in 7 games and start 1 as a 17 year old. He ended up with 237 rushing yards and 1 TD along with 243 passing yards and 3 TDs. Unfortunately, Tate also had 3 interceptions and only completed 40% of his passes.
This year Tate enters the season with a different attitude. He knows he is competing for the starting job. Reports show he is currently behind Dawkins, but he has impressed his teammates and still has a cannon for an arm. It also helps he is in the shape required to run this offense and has a much better grasp of the play book.
“He’s getting more and more familiar with us,” Smith said. “He looks comfortable in the pocket. That’s a huge plus. He’s still piecing it together, still figuring it out. But he’s further along now than what he was last spring and even the summer.”
“We’ve got to catch his mind up to his physical abilities,” Smith said. “When he does that, he’s going to be a very good football player.”
On what he needs to do to improve Tate said, “Taking what the defense gives me,” said. “Going over my reads and making the right decisions. Getting the ball in my playmakers’ hands.”
Players on both sides of the ball have noticed. Safety Isaiah Hayes said Tate looks more comfortable in Year 2 and is playing more freely as a result. Receiver Shawn Poindexter said Tate is “really stepping it up. He’s really maturing. He’s definitely going to be a weapon for us this year and years to come.”
“He’s certainly more advanced than he was a year ago, which he should be – 17-year-old freshman and expecting to be redshirted,” Rodriguez said. “Now he’s competing for the job and for significant playing time.”
Is he prepared for that responsibility, if called upon?
“Yes, I am,” Tate said. “I’ve always had this confidence. It may have taken a couple months, but right now I think I’m ready.”
14 is the Arizona record for most passes caught in a game set by Jeremy McDaniel against Cal in '96.

The prototypical RR QB except he has superior arm strength. I see him as QB1 as some point during the season.

Do you think it will be because of a Dawkin's injury or because Tate will out play him?

I think it will be because RR chooses to. Tate didn't play today though.

Any info on why he was held out? We might need him but how c would he look if he received a RS year? I have heard several of the players praise his progress

I didn't hear that he was hurt though it's possible. I'm thinking he missed curphew at La Paloma last night.
327 yards rushing and 11-12 throwing. What a performance.

First, it's probably too cute by half in this situation.
But the real worry isn't that; it's that Rich is serious and he doesn't know who will start next week.

Right. And everybody in here said we would be 2-3 after this game, so who to believe...

Ok. You're also assuming Rich actually wants to get to 6 or 7 wins and come back next year instead of getting paid to move on.
We'll see if Tate starts the next game or not.

Well, if UCLA can prepare for a QB like Dawkins who doesn't run as well or passes as well at K Tate then more power to them!

One thing is for sure. He’s in a lot better shape this year than he was last year. Looks like he’s put a muzzle on that rifle he calls an arm too. Threw a lot of nice looking passes tonight

I know you complain to complain as it's your persona on this board, but which game under Mora-RichRod saw UCLA get "all the calls"

Yep, that's the sound of UCLA week around here. Both fanbases hoping to take out their frustrations on each other.

Passed or ran it 26 times resulting in 5 TDs and 469 yards. 1 incompletion, no turnovers, never sacked, no lost yardage (until the victory formation). And won. He didn't have to throw it 50 times like a Nick Foles or a Keith Smith in an overtime game. So who has done better? I'd say nobody. Just because the stage and exposure wasn't as big doesn't diminish the performance.

The one incompletion was a drop. Only one penalty on offense I believe. QBR on ESPN of 100.0.
About as close to a perfect game as you could get.

Had a perfect QBR rating for the game. I don't really know if QBR means much but perfect is pretty good! Showed better touch on his one long pass completion than Dawkins ever has.

Like Dawkins, Tate's game seems to follow his personality .... quiet, thoughtful, well self-managed, not given to his emotions taking control of him.
