I read that he was diagnosed at UofA medical center and they sent him to Texas for treatment. UofA medical center is a major cancer treatment center and if they sent him somewhere else that is not good. I won't say he was the best ever that coached at the UofA but I'll say this, he was the most incredible human being that coached at the UofA. Bear Down Coach Tomey.

My roommate in college played for him for two years and absolutely loved him as did some of my other fraternity brothers who were on the team. Said he would take a bullet for anyone and they were all so pissed when he was fired as they felt it was their faults. In hindsight an absolutely dumb decision and I was proud of Byrne for mending that fence and honoring Tomey a couple years back

I'm still pissed about Jim "balance the books" Livengood firing Tomey.

Tomey: great coach, greater person.

Livengood: worst AD ever.

That's cool. I hope they caught the cancer early enough. Time will tell. My concern is the lower back (secondary location) is not the thoracic cavity (primary location) where the lungs are located. 30% of all lung cancers spread to the spine or bones. This tweet implies there was surgery to the lumbar or sacral (pelvic) area. It also means the cancer metastasized. Tomey will have to return to the radiology department for testing periodically. And my guess is he will have to continue chemotherapy for a awhile longer to make sure they got all the cancer (cancer my still be present and not show up on tests). I pray he will be tested cancer free for years to come.

RIP Coach Tomey. I had a feeling we would be hearing this news soon after watching Mike Candrea mention Coach Tomey during last night's game. Very sad day but we were very fortunate to have him coach the Cats

He was the coach at University of Hawaii when I went to high school there. Couldn’t for the life of me understand why he would leave to go to Arizona. In one of life’s odd twists I was a freshman at Arizona a few years later. From all I can tell, he was one of the few good guys in a profession filled with self-centered and just generally bad people. RIP Coach Tomey.

Aloha coach! A Hui Hou Kākou

Dick Tomey, trail-blazing football coach at the University of Hawaii, dies at 80
Under Tomey’s guidance, the ‘Bows drew their first sellout crowd at the 50,000-seat stadium in 1978 losing to eventual national champion USC, 21-5, after trailing, 7-3, into the fourth quarter. Gritty defense and solid special teams play were hallmarks of his tenure at UH.

A class act.
Tomey was UA's head football coach from 1987-2000. He posted a career record of 95-64-4, making him the all-time winningest coach in the program's history. He guided the Wildcats to six bowl games, including a Fiesta Bowl victory in 1993. His eight wins over Arizona State are tied with Pop McKale for the most for a UA head coach.

He might be one of the few coaches who is the all time winningest at multiple schools. His work reviving the San Jose St program and getting them into a bowl was amazing.

Opening up against Hawaii had to be pre planned as a way to honor coach. Not sure all the players on both teams will appreciate what he did for the schools but there will be a bunch of people tearing up on those two sidelines who remember what he did

Tomey was our best FB coach. He accomplished more that any other Arizona football coach, and brought U of A football to national respectability.

He was also an excellent community member and never failed to represent the university well. He was a class act in every respect. All true.

He was also unceremoniously dismissed from the university and given the bum's rush. As I recall, the majority of fans on the then-existing sports discussion forums joined in the disrespect....

His "fault"??? He never got the U of A to a Rose Bowl.

Fuck that AD and administration. Fuck those fans. Fuck the retread who replaced him, too!

Maybe they can repeat the "success" with CSM, eh???

I would say that was more Larry Smith, but Tomey was probably the most loved coach in recent UA history.

One of the few UA HCs fired by the UA that actually found another job as a college HC.

Although technically Tomey resigned in lieu of being fired. Hopefully he still got paid as getting fired, although he had to sue for it.

I’m sure Coach Tomey wouldn’t appreciate these kinds of sentiments while people are honoring his legacy, but you do you homie.

Coach Tomey did reconcile with everyone in the department, even Livengood. His son Rich was set to marry his daughter but I don’t think that happened. He was a man that never held a grudge. He would tell you exactly how he felt but then it was over. Dude was top shelf

Too many thoughts right now. I was too hard on him in life. Great person, and it was an honor to have the memory of meeting him.

Probably the closest thing to a legendary coach Wildcat football will ever have. RIP Coach.

RIP Coach Tomey

My Arizona fandom started too late for me to appreciate Tomey's work, but I do remember watching the 1998 Holiday Bowl Vs Nebraska and being impressed with how rare it was for anybody to go toe-to-toe against the Cornhuskers like that.

How is it the all time winningest football coach in our history has to wait until he dies to get into the HOF. Not like we haven’t had over a 100 years of history to pick our best candidate. Flat out embarrassing really. Well deserved
