That seems to be a huge get for us. JF connection to the pats had to really help. Don’t think the Gronk has anything against us but he is a busy, rich young man who has many travel destinations above Tucson I would think. Now with only the PAC network to promote it how do we make it sizzle

Too bad there won’t be a Starr Pass Pool Party for Gronk to MC. Could have shown clips of that until the pause button on my remote broke.

That's a great schedule. Man, really tempted to plan some long roadies to Tucson. Kinda tough to do knowing we may very well suck so bad it'll just disgust me.

I am looking forward to this upcoming season. I don't expect a winning season, but I believe we will see this team be more competitive. I have loved what Fisch has done so far, especially opening up the practice to the media. I feel like we will get to know the players better. I hope all the the people who hated the hiring of Fisch will be supportive. He is 100% better than Sumlin.

Rather easy to be better than Sumlin. If you have any ounce of passion, doesn't matter what happens on the field, you're an improvement over Sumlin. Excited to see what Fisch brings to the program. Happy with what I've seen so far, he's said the right things and made the right moves

No one hated the hire more than me probably. I let everyone I know in the AD I thought it was terrible. I cancelled my tickets and was loud on FB running the hire down.
I have to say now that on the surface I look stupid (not hard for me to do) but I am reserving my total support until I see the product on the field. So far so good and if they are well prepared and competitive in all aspects of a football game then I will order my crow blackened

I’m excited we don’t have to suffer through another season with stumblin at the helm. I hated the hire (Fisch) & will gladly eat sautéed crow with extra garlic! I absolutely love Don Brown and can’t wait to see the improvements on that side of the ball. This gives me something to believe in...

I think Fisch has done well in media and fan relations and well in the transfer portal. I'm not 100% sold on HS recruiting and I want to see progress on the field before I believe much.
Some of that is Robbins more than Fisch. It isn't Fisch's fault the hiring process was conducted like it was. More than anything, I'm just jaded. I've been sold on the new excitement before.
Niumatalolo or Brennan, I feel like I could look to their prior record for some comfort. Fisch doesn't have that prior record, so I'm gonna need to see it.

Went To Practice
Posted: Sat Mar 27, 2021 2:06 pm
by TheCatInTheHat
Sat in an open grassy square on the sidelines of the Dick Tomey Practice Fields this morning. They're working on the basics. There was a walk-through drill on kick coverage to shed blockers, and another one for ball security while diving into a pad. The RBs practiced cuts that required staying low to get through metal or PVC rectangles. Fisch supervised a drill with the QBs taking snaps under center and either handing off or throwing a swing pass to the RBs. Not surprisingly, Cruz and Wiley looked the best to me, and Stevie Rocker got some praise. Cruz and Plummer both launched some nice deep passes to a stationary GA in the end zone in another drill. Didn't notice Wolma in the time I was there, but Marshall and Lines both really look the part in the tight end derby. Cruz moved the ball downfield well in a semi-scrimmage setting, but he got some yards scrambling when the defense wasn't allowed to hit before having the play whistled dead. As I said, it was mostly drills and the defense couldn't really hit much, so I couldn't pick out many standouts there. They were doing some scrimmaging inside the Davis Sports Center (no generic fans) before coming out to the Tomey Fields. That may be the way they do it as time goes on, with the more sensitive stuff taking place in that controlled environment.

If you are wondering which Arizona Football home game to go to this season make the best choice for the most competitive home game. Your choice should be NAU because that’s gonna be a close one but the Cats could win by running the ball.</p>— Coach Steve “Chief” Burt (@Chiefzona1472)
I guess Chief/Tatanka is just keeping it real with us fans. Talk about a program killing wannabe

That is some funny sheet Merk...Oh, and by the way, Jordan sucks in case anyone was wondering.
This kid will be coming into a wonderful situation come June. Make good reads and don’t throw picks and you have a wonderful shot of taking the QB #1 spot. Someone will still say he sucks. Looking forward to those tweets!

Supposedly Plummer has been turning it over at a pretty high clip this spring. While I thought he had the physical tools to be decent, if he can't get the mental aspect down he has absolutely no chance. With that, Cruz appears to be the clear frontrunner right now but he might just be winning by default.
Biggest concern is still the oline and it sounds like they picked up where they left off last year. The team will have a hard time winning games if the oline can't get it together.

Can't add anything specific, but from what I've read, it sounds like they've kind of let "Dr. Blitz" throw the kitchen sink at them. Considering a new offensive system, and likely new check-off terminology, it would figure that the offense would struggle. It's certainly a concern, but the other side of it is that this is great practice against it, and there's no choice but for everybody to get better at handling blitzes when we eventually play somebody with different colored jerseys. If the o-line is going to just outright stink, then we're screwed, regardless. Hopefully, the problems on offense are at least partly due to the situation, and we'll improve there with a little more familiarity.

Gotta say...for a guy who's about to turn 86, he looks pretty damned good, and he sounds like he's still pretty sharp. Having recently witnessed the physical and mental decline and demise of my in-laws at that age, it's pretty impressive to see somebody hold it together the way he has. For what I assume are the vast majority of posters here who might not remember him, I'll summarize. He had been the top assistant to Bo Schembechler at Michigan. To make the best use of the available personnel and give other teams a different look, he brought Bill Yeoman's Houston Veer offense with him, as well as the Dallas Cowboys' 4-3 Flex defense. Future Arizona head coaches John Mackovic and Larry Smith were his offensive and defensive coordinators respectively. Behind the brush-blocking O-line, #1 Bruce Hill was a hybrid option QB, #2 Willie Hamilton was the HB, generally taking pitches wide, and #3 Jim Upchurch was the FB, getting tough yardage between the tackles (hence, "The 1-2-3 Backfield.") Hill would throw slants to future Steeler WR T Bell, and WR Scott Piper seemingly ran miles every game on decoy deep routes, until Hill would hit him with a home run when the defense was lulled to sleep and the safeties crept up. Future Cardinal Mike Dawson was a ball-hawking DT, as the whole line focused on getting tipped balls on passes and stripping ballcarriers. Behind them, LB Obra "The Cobra" Erby covered a lot of ground. Dennis Anderson was both a starting safety and the punter. Pencil-thin Lee Pistor was a straight-ahead kicker with 50-yard range who had to be told not to get into the middle of the fray making tackles on kickoff returns. After years of mediocrity at Arizona, Young's teams went 26-7 his first three years, and shut out nemesis ASU 10-0, complete with Frank Kush throwing sideline tantrums and breaking clipboards and yard markers over his knee. But, the talent Young had inherited ran out of eligibility, and he wasn't a particularly smooth-talking recruiter. He also missed the bigger crowds and pageantry of the Big Ten. So, when Purdue came calling, he went, and it was the first time in a long time that any third team posed any kind of threat to the Ohio State/Michigan monopoly. After five years at Purdue, he went to West Point, doing admirably well with some 8 and 9 win teams there. And after eight years at Army, he retired and moved back to Tucson. He was coaxed out of retirement by Dick Tomey to be the OL coach at Arizonafor three years before finally hanging up his whistle for good. He was elected to the College Football HOF in 1999.

It was "common knowledge" back then that black guys couldn't play quarterback and Hill let it be known in no uncertain terms that he wasn't interested in being converted to any other position.
SOMEWHERE there has GOT to be a photo of when Linda Ronstadt played at McKale (seemingly) wearing nothing but Bruce Hill's #1 jersey - and I want a copy of it.

I'm pretty sure it was in the early 70's. So your concert may have been a second one.
