Canales is a 6-3, 221, Freshman linebacker from Mountain Pointe HS (in Arizona), Plano, TX. Last year he had 59 tackles (3 for a loss) and 2 interceptions. He holds records at his high school for weight lifting and also ran the 100 meter on the track team. Canales comes from a family of athletes. His Dad, Fernando, is a 3 time Olympian in swimming from Puerto Rico and Olympic flag bearer for Puerto Rico in 1984 and his mother, Mona, swam for the Norweigen National team. I believe him to be an early entry walk-on, which you don't see very often. In any case, he was on the spring roster and has a jump on the other new linebackers in learning the system.

His mom was a friend of some of my friends I hung out with in the years right after I graduated. Met her at a wedding about 30 years ago.
I heard he was going to UofA to play football but couldn't find any info on his signing and then realized he was a walk-on.

What is the policy on putting first names on jerseys? I don't care how good he is or not, but we could do a lot better this year if we had THOR on our sideline.

He did 355 in the hang clean. That's impressive.
Also ran the 100 meters in 12:12 per

Going to be hard to keep this kid off the field.
