Will the UA president get involved?

Fisch should be the only person responsible for the hire. Even a poor CEO knows that if he surrounds himself with good managers he won't look all that bad.

Promote from within and keep the same system. Perhaps elevate the position coach of the most improved defensive unit.

There is a reason why those two former players are lifelong position coaches, outside of one disastrous year for Cecil as DC for the Titans.

There’s no guarantee that promoting from within means we’d run the same system.

That doesn't mean they have to die as position coaches. If you do a good job you get considered for a promotion.

I agree with this idea to an extent, but don't think he would ever come here. I made the case when we fired RichRod to hire Lane Kiffin. Everyone scoffed at me because he's a carpetbagger, but he knows how to bake a cake and wins wherever he goes. Kiffin would have used our program to exact revenge on every program that slighted him, something I would have had no problem with. We'd also be nationally relevant and ranked.

So I'm saying all of that to say this: not all retreads are created equal. Find a talented guy with PR issues and let the wins speak for themselves.

Has Cecil done a good job? The safeties have been bad, you could say that is a result of bad players but it might be the only defensive position group that isn't really better than last year.

Dr Wildcat, are you sure about that on the safeties? I think the safeties have battled a lot of injuries. Joe Salavea is not coming here. He has a great gig up north, lots of money and admiration, he's not coming. I'm with Greg and if they hire from within it will be Walker. My big worry and its not a panic yet but how many defensive players will hit the transfer portal because of this and how many recruits will decommit. It's a worry, not a panic

Salave’a made $685K this season. If Brown was offered more than that to stay as reported, then the UA has the ability to pay Salave’a more to come on down.

I do think a program owes it's alumni a shot. Hunley and Cecil finally got one here. Either one certainly deserves to be considered for a promotion, but Fisch has to decide this make or break hire. I'm not sure we want to lose the rest of the staff and a new outside DC will likely want to choose his own assistants.
I don't know if that kind of disruption is what we need now.

The solution is to have Fisch call up Joe Saleve’a and talk career advancement. It seems like coaching under him is a fast path to HC and he’ll help him get there. Maybe even at the U of A after a few more years.

Win-win.

And/or overlapped with Fisch.

If fisch hasn’t coached with them, not sure he would bring them in as a DC.

My guess is either D. Walker or the Ole Miss DC that coached under Brown for many years. Obviously fangio would be a freaking surprise.

Please do not promote from within, the defense was a success due to Don Brown being a dude not any positional group. The only defensive coach whose group has overperformed to a noticeable level is the DL and I would not be OK with Hunley taking over. I am just hoping we dont lose all the defensive recruits we got over this and if we were willing to make Don Brown he highest paid coordinator in the PAC that money should be used to get a legit DC (or maybe a DC and an OC).

I highly doubt a new DC is going to demand that current coaches be fired. Some may leave to follow Brown or to pursue other opportunities but I’ve never heard of a coordinator coming in and demanding that he gets to fire a bunch of people right out of the gate.

Cool, I didn't know what typically happens.
I read an article that kept stating that we are always gonna be poached for every good coach we get, and we need stability most of all.
I know it's unpopular, but I would make Cecil and Hunley co- coordinators, and give everyone else a raise.
They have had a year working with Brown, they know all the recruits and they are here for the right reasons.
When it comes right down to it, no coach has some secret knowledge. There's only so many techniques and schemes, the rest is how well you can teach and motivate etc.

I'd try giving them a bigger role, see if they rise to the occasion for their beloved Alma
Mater. Might catch lightning in a bottle.

Yeah, no thank you.

If we were willing to make Brown the highest paid coordinator in the conference, we can afford to do a real search and bring in someone who either has put kids into the NFL or coached there themselves.

My feel good story is that these guys had fairly long coaching careers, and now the only job they want is here and they are highly motivated to make their final job, bringing this program back.
They have been seething for years, wanting to come here and are on a mission and become instrumental in our run of Pac 12 championships. Books are written, movies made and blah, blah, blah.
I'm now convinced we are in the woods for years, no matter who the coaches are.

The rumor is that Joe's title of Co defensive coordinator is just a title to get him more money because they like his recruiting especially in the Polynesian community. He doesn't call any of the plays and he,s basically a glorified position coach. I'd love to have big Joe on the staff but not as DC.
