Re: 2022 Season Thread
Brutal schedule. This year two of our OOC teams win double digit games. No excuse for losing to NAU and UDub so we should have had 3 wins. This schedule looks so tough that the O/U might be 2

Re: 2022 Season Thread
It all depends on the QB situation. It is important that Nifita is arriving for spring ball with Burnett. Arizona was in position to win 4 games this year but the QBs had terrible 4th quarters (BYU/NAU).
I’m also curious how we close out recruiting. We have probably up to 30 signings for this class with likely transfers.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
So we have Mcloud and Cruz coming back from injury, Plummer and Fifita. Not sure any are really D1 caliber. Cruz probably needs to transfer to a Big Sky school or something. Mcloud has too small of a sample size and we don't know how he comes back from a pretty severe injury. Fifita is listed as 5-9 so probaby shorter than that. He would have to be really special to start as a freshman.
Then there's Plummer. He is a tough one, has moments, but is he really the QB to take this team through a rebuild or do we need to shop for another transfer?

Re: 2022 Season Thread
At this point, I don't think there is an obvious win on next years schedule. With that, I agree with this guy, we needs wins.
Re: 2022 Season Thread
Yeah looking at that schedule and then our roster and coaching, the ceiling next year looks like 3 wins.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
I think they can win 3 games. If they lose to asu again, that would make it 6 straight. No way Heeke would survive. I also think if a new AD came in, he would hire a new head football coach. Since Arizona is on the bottom of the Pac-12 in football, why not go out and hire Deion Sanders? It's not like he could do any worse. The football program would get a lot of national exposure. Deion would be able to bring in the top level California recruits.

No way we are winning 3 games with that schedule.
Re: 2022 Season Thread
I would think Heeke should be looking for another AD position then.

Heeke doesn’t have the balls to ask for extra napkins at Wendy’s, let alone try to find a new AD job. He’s going to ride this train until it crashes.

Can't imagine any quality players in the portal that would be willing to come to one of the worst DI programs. No bowl game for years, and either you get 8 pm night games on ESPN, or daytime games on the PAC channel, so won't get any exposure.
The only thing the UA can offer is playing time. Maybe get some homesick AZ kid, or someone tired of sitting on the bench at LSU or likewise.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Sounds like that Ohio State QB who is from Arizona is sick of being on the bench, but honestly with Plummer, McCloud, and Fifita (plus Cruz, et al) it sounds like our QB room is already pretty crowded.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
That's the main thing (almost always)...on both sides of the ball.
Our o-line was disappointingly crappy, so maybe it's addition by subtraction, but we lose a number of big bodies there, as well as on the d-line. We still have a very scary roster situation. Not a ton of size in the incoming recruiting class, so hopefully we'll go heavy (literally) there in the portal.
I also agree with Scott Terrell about buying-out ND St for somebody like Southern Utah. I don't know what they lose, but the Bison are always one of the best in the FCS, we lost to a 5-6 FCS NAU team, and I don't see us being all that amazingly improved next season. Don't think our fans are on the edge of their seats to see any FCS team; It's more the you-can't-win Greg Hansen attitude. The scheduling approach with them was a really stupid shoot-yourself-in-the-foot moment.
Re: 2022 Season Thread
I don't know what everyone expected this year but I don't think a lot of people have thought this through. Did any of you really expect this to be over in a year or two? I think we were expected to win one game this year and that's what we did. Anyone that doesn't think we made big improvements during the season didn't really understand what was going on. The improvements did not translate into wins but the improvements were there. The Will Plummer that finished this season was improved 100% from the Will Plummer at the beginning of the season. It took us five years to climb out of the dumpster after what Makevic did to us. Stoops when he arrived was a focused and committed coach that brought good assistants and recruited well and it still took 5 years. I think Sumlin left us in far worse shape and this isn't going to be over in two years no matter who the coach is. Fisch's first full recruiting year looks to be excellent. Maybe as high as 3rd or 4th in the PAC12. Everything about this team got better during the season and I don't see any reason why that won't continue. I still think every position was coached better this year than the past five. It was most apparent on defense. Yes our O line needs more talent but we knew that at the beginning but saying they were disappointingly crappy is ridiculous. Based on the talent they had and the injuries I think they did pretty darn good. Someone was saying we don't have any size in the incoming class and that is absolutely wrong. We have two O line commits and one is 6'4" and 330lbs and the other is 6'4" and 290lbs. these are 18 year old kids. Personally I see no reson why we can't get a few more quality kids through the transfer portal. Its still going to be a bumpy ride no matter what.

Have any of those guys actually signed their letters yet?
Re: 2022 Season Thread
There is also an early signing period (December 15th this year)

In any case, of course the UA has not signed anyone yet, because they can't.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
We lost our second best recruit and we a likely going to lose 3 of our next 5 as they are all looking elsewhere, so if we manage to finish in the top half of the recruiting rankings that would be a huge accomplishment.
Re: 2022 Season Thread
what second best recruit did we lose? We still have our three four stars and a top rated dual threat QB along with a highly rated running back. And who are the next three out of five? Did they all tell you they were looking elsewhere?gronk4heisman wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 12:51 pm We lost our second best recruit and we a likely going to lose 3 of our next 5 as they are all looking elsewhere, so if we manage to finish in the top half of the recruiting rankings that would be a huge accomplishment.

We lost Zeke Berry. Tyler Martin is likely following Don Brown since he followed him to Arizona, Kyron Chambers is very interested in TCU and that will be a fight per Scheer and Sterling Lane has said he will likely visit Cincy and is still hearing a lot from Oregon St and said Brown was the main reason he committed here. Zeke Berry decommited last month and was far from our second best recruit and Tyler would be no surprise but maybe wait until he announces it before you say it. All I know is these guys are still committed and will be until they decide otherwise. Chambers is from Texas so I won't discount that but again, he is far from our best recruit. I think a lot will depend on who we hire as DC. I'm not sure why you're puting this out there as fact. Its almost like wishful thinking on your part

Re: 2022 Season Thread
I base things on fact, like the fact that Zeke was our 2nd highest rated recruit at the time when he decommitted. And like the fact that none of these guys are signed and several are factually looking around. And the fact that Lane (2nd), Martin (4th) and Chambers (5th) are three of our five highest rated recruits. Maybe we are not "likely" to lose them but it is a damn good possibility and not just because I put it out there on a message board. They are not looking elsewhere because I said anything. I have been through this song and dance enough to know a committed recruit means very little until they put pen to paper. I am glad you have blind faith in this program, it is what a team needs in times like these. Unfortunately, I am not built that way.tgrumpy2 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 5:17 pmgronk4heisman wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 2:51 pmWe lost Zeke Berry. Re: 2022 Season Thread
I actually hate the word "commit" they use for prospects who favor a certain school. They most certainly are not committed until they sign the NLI.
There is also no requirement that recruits have to sign a NLI. They can just sign athletic scholarship papers, which binds the school to the player, but not the player to the school.

Martin has said he is coming and in fact will be here In January. Things could change I guess but he looks pretty committed. Maybe if he doesn’t like the hire?

Re: 2022 Season Thread
A guy has a flat tire on a rural road. He gets out cursing, "Shit! this is just fuckin great, I bet I don't even have a spare, or it will probably be flat."
Just then, it starts to sprinkle and he says "Fuck! That's just what I need, it'll probably start hailing next."
He finds he has a good spare, but no jack.
"Goddammit! That just figures I'd get stuck out here in the ass end of nowhere with no fucking jack. There probably won't be another car coming down this godforsaken jerk water road for hours."
He starts walking back to a farmhouse he passed, to see if he can get help. "I'll probably walk all this way and no one will be home". "Farmer probably won't even have a jack." "Probably some wifebeater wearing asshole who won't even lend me a jack."
He sighs and knocks on the door. The farmer answers "Yessir, can I help you?"
"Yeah, you motherfucker! You can take your damn jack and stick it up your ass!!!"
That's what some of you remind me of.
I'm looking forward to 2022. I'm forgetting this year and starting over. I'll lament the losses when they happen, not 10 months in advance.

Casteel had 9 dropped balls this year and Curry was not close to being a game changer. I don’t think any of them will be missed. We are going to bring in some speedsters and play makers

Yeah, I was disappointed with the receiving corps this year (among a few other areas like our running game)
Hopefully we can pull in some playmakers ‘cause god knows we need some.

Casteel is addition by subtraction and I would guess that was very mutual. Whenever we had a chance to win you can find a Casteel drop in there making sure that chance was squashed.
Curry never really met his hype and had been passed by Singer and Simpson as true freshman by the end of the year. With a couple play makers coming in the writing was on the wall.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Looked into getting some SDSU tickets, but they are opening in the new stadium and they are pretty difficult to get. Only 2500 have been released to the UA.
It will be nice to have McCloud back, but needs someone to throw to with Berryhill gone. Maybe they freshmen can help there.
I imagine Vegas will have it that way too. A team 1-11 (should have been 0-12 except for Covid) probably won't have a dramatic improvement, esp with the best players (not Casteel, Curry) leaving. Nice recruiting class yes, but for the most part can't expect true freshmen to contribute, especially right away.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
If there was ever a situation where talented freshmen could contribute more than current starters.......... I do think we'll win a few games, but maybe not until conference play.
If Fisch can land Slovis for a year that would be ideal, provided he can win the starting job. (likely)
If not, with Fifita so highly regarded, I could see him beating out Plummer.
