San Diego State football started fall camp on Friday. The East Village Times was on hand for the festivities. Compared to the beginning of spring camp in March and fall camp a season ago, the players were more workmanlike in their approach. There was less trash talking between the offense and defense. The players gave great effort and competed extremely hard, but the emotion was more subdued.
The team practiced like a veteran group. There were few obvious mistakes. It was a very well-choreographed practice. SDSU’s coaches focused on fundamentals throughout. Most of the position coaches paid special attention to the true freshmen practicing for the first time as Aztecs.
“It’s great to be back out,” SDSU head coach Brady Hoke said after practice. “It’s fun to be here. Like I told the guys last night, ‘I love camp.’ Really it’s not like camp used to be. Camp used to be something. It’s easy now, to be honest with you. But, I love camp because I can spend time with them, 24 hours a day. We can be that close.”
SDSU’s Defense is loaded
Any practice without pads is not real football so drawing conclusions is foolish, but the talent on the defensive side of the ball is very evident. The third-string players at every position are fast, have good length, and play with bad intentions.
Jatavious Magee, a redshirt freshman safety, changed numbers from 11 to 20. Donning his new number, he was all over the field. He competed well in drills and looks to be a player.
Wyatt Draegar and Dylan Taylor held up well at defensive end. They look like they can contribute on the defensive line.
Adonis Brown is a senior leader. He directed the cornerbacks in drills helping CB coach Demetrius Sumler and graduate assistant Donnel Pumphrey get the unit set up. When he was in the game, he made plays, breaking up multiple passes.
Dominic Oliver looks to be a future star. His first step and burst might be the best on the defense.
Competition it seems does make everyone better. The challenge the coaching staff has over the next few weeks is to see where players like these can fit into the rotation in 2022.
The Aztecs’ offensive line needs to grow up
The starting five for Mike Goff’s line on Friday were Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson (RT), Ross Ulugalu-Maseuli (RG), Alama Uluave (C), Cade Bennett (LG), and Zavier Leonard (LT). The second unit was Josh Simmons (RT), Joey Wright (RG), Tommy Mirabella (C), Christian Jones (LG), and Jonathan Harrison (LT). This group will determine the ceiling for this team.
On Friday without pads, the offense had trouble establishing themselves. Following practice, Braxton Burmeister said it was a big install day so it is possible this was the reason the offense did not look sharp. A more likely culprit is the line had trouble stopping penetration. Defense is typically ahead of the offense early. That held true on Friday.
At Wednesday’s press conference, Hoke said he would have a better idea on Friday if his line had improved. After practice when asked if he had insight, he replied, “give me another Friday.”
This is Braxton Burmeister’s team
One of the hopes that the offense in 2022 can be improved is because Burmeister has the ability to make every throw. His accuracy and consistency in drills leaped out. Every other quarterback had one or more locations in drills that they had trouble completing except for SDSU’s starter. In team drills, the staff mostly used him to practice handoffs as they shuttled running backs in and out.
Following practice, Burmeister spoke to the media and said all the right things. He spoke about enjoying his time at Virginia Tech but was blessed to be in San Diego. He has embraced his role as the leader in the QB room, knowing the younger guys are looking up to him. Burmeister spoke about the history of great Aztec QBs and wanted to help make SDSU a “hotbed” for the position once again. Through it all, he made it clear: this is Braxton Burmeister’s team.
“Yes, definitely,” Burmeister responded when asked if there’s a change in mindset heading into fall camp compared to when he first arrived. “Just starting to be more vocal and stepping up as a vocal leader. I feel like now that I’ve proven that I’m here to play Aztec football, I can kind of start talking and being more vocal for sure.”
This and That
– The TEs and WRs warmed up together with WR coach Hunkie Cooper leading both groups in the drills usually reserved for his receivers.
– The RBs were the first targets the QBs threw to. They lined up wide and the QBs lofted deep shots to their backs. The work paid off, in team drills, Will Haskell found Martin Blake on a streak for a touchdown.
– Aside from Burmeister, Haskell received as many reps as the rest of the QBs on the roster combined. He had a mixed day. He threw another TD to Darius De Los Reyes and a deep shot to Brionne Penny, who made a great grab down the sidelines over two defenders. Haskell also took a pair of sacks in 7-on-7. No other QB did. There were a few throws where he was not even close to his receivers.
– Haskell and Burmeister are athletic. Each had a spectacular evasion of a free defender that received cheers from their offensive teammates.
– The running back rotation was Chance Bell, Jordan Byrd, Jaylon Armstead, Kenan Christon, Cam Davis, and then the rest of the room rotated.
– Bell looked every bit as fast and shifty at his new weight of 200 pounds as he has his entire career.
– During the offseason, offensive line coach Mike Goff praised Josh Simmons for having some of the best feet he has ever seen. At Wednesday’s press conference and again after practice Friday, coach Hoke echoed those sentiments. Watching Simmons in practice, it is easy to see why. He moves like a receiver. In one drill Goff had the linemen explode out of their stance, backpedal to the left before sprinting back towards the line. Impressive does not begin to describe Simmons’ performance in this drill.
– Keshawn Banks did not participate much on Friday. As a veteran, he knows what he needs to do to get ready.
-In Banks’ place, Daniel Okpoko ran with the first team instead of Garret Fountain. Okpoko is tall, athletic, and a presence for the team.
– Jonah Tavai played most frequently at nose tackle. His brother Justus played where Banks typically lines up.
– Patrick McMorris set the tone for the practice. The team practiced special teams to start the day. On one of the first reps, McMorris sprinted down the field like he was playing in the MW Championship game.
– Freshman kicker Jarrett Reeser chose #92.
– Mehki Shaw had the catch of the practice, somehow bringing in a pass between two defenders while being interfered with.
– The only interception during team play was made by Noah Avinger. He picked off Kyle Crum on a pass along the sideline.
– Caden McDonald scooped up a miffed fumble in the end zone. McDonald could be heard encouraging his teammates as the practice wore on.
– No one can cover Jesse Matthews. Following practice, Burmeister said he has never seen Matthews drop a ball since he’s been on campus. The senior QB praised his WR’s competitiveness and reminisced about throwing together as high school prep stars.
– Lots of players were cramping at practice. Coach Hoke said that the players need to take better care of themselves to avoid the issue.
– Jay Rudolph’s toughness is off the charts. He gives 100% on each snap until his body will not take it. Rudolph came off with a violent but common in football vomiting fit. It lasted around 10 minutes. Once it ended and he was cleared by the athletic training staff, Rudolph was back out on the field, playing harder and longer than anyone else.
– The coaches’ personalities are interesting. Defensive coordinator Kurt Mattix, for example, gave the specialists on the team an ear full when he came out on the field. He told long snapper, Tyson Chavez, that he belonged with the LBs where Chavez played in high school. He egged on David Delgado. Throughout practice Mattix’ booming voice can be heard all the time. Safeties coach Kyle Hoke, in contrast, says “please” frequently when shouting out commands to his players. His voice only rang out above everyone else once when Davaughn Celestine held a WR causing too much contact for the padless practice.
– True freshman WR Hassan Mahasin was not practicing.
– Mattix was supporting his players’ NIL deals on Friday. He coached practice in a Sons of Montezuma Cooper McDonald T-Shirt. McDonald, his brother, and a few others from the team have an NIL deal with the local company with the players receiving a portion of the proceeds of any t-shirt sales. Aztec fans wanting to support this NIL deal can click here.
– Noah Avinger, Noah Tumblin, Dezjhon Malone and Dallas Branch rotated as starters at cornerback.
– Hoke would not name any true freshman as a standout who could help the team play. He did mention running back and secondary as positions with lots of talent.
– DL Deven Lamp and Pa’a Ewaliko are no longer with the team.

Goddammit. The least Im seeing on SDSUs site is 178 bucks each for nosebleed and Arizonas office wants you to give them 100 to join the Wildcat club before they'll sell you a ticket. Fucking nonsense. WTF?

I don't disagree with you. It would be nice to max-out on Arizona fans at road games, and a certain chunk of them are likely to be more local alums who see it as a near-by opportunity to see the team. Arizona ICA sees it as a chance to make sure they reserve seats for high rollers and try to pressure more people into the Wildcat Club. I belonged to that for over 30 years when I lived in Tucson, but that's not going to happen now. What's even worse is their point system (basically how much you donate) to determine where, or even if, you'll get bowl tickets. I get taking care of the biggest donors, but I'll bet they have an allocation of no more than about 400 seats, and I'll also bet after family, friends, and a few rabid fan/donors, they'll return half of them to be sold to SDSU fans. It's the first game (on CBS) in SDSU's new, small stadium and with no Chargers in town anymore and after they had a big year: high demand. I thought about it, but it's going to be hot in Mission Valley with a 1230 kickoff, and with the cost and hassle, I decided not to. But, I stopped going through the Arizona ticket office for road or bowl games a long time ago. In my experience, it's much better (and faster) to go directly to the local team or bowl. You might try a re-seller, like Vivid or Stub Hub. Probably cost even more with somebody trying to cash in, but you might get a break if somebody can't go and just wants to recover the cost of their tickets.

Looks like $75 through the Alumni Association. Seems many would qualify just being an alumni.
You must be an Arizona Football season ticket holder, current Wildcat Club member, or University of Arizona Alumni to place an advance order for away game tickets.
Advance orders will be filled about two weeks prior to each game. More information on ticket delivery will be communicated closer to each game
All tickets will be assigned in priority point order.

Great picture of San Diego State's new Snapdragon Stadium...
Only one Question - Who the hell designed this layout of the field to be so wide?
Looks like the size of the Superdome on the sidelines. The sidelines seats are too far from the field and some of the endzone seats in the back of the picture have straight views of the corner on the opposite side, but if you want to watch the field, you have to turn your head. Nice new stadium, terrible layout. Arizona stadium has better views and it nearly a century old.
Since it's already built, maybe they can squeeze a running track in there and host the Olympics or some other event and forget the purpose of the new stadium.
I'm disappointed!
...just saying.

It's my understanding that the stadium will be used for pro soccer as well that's why they made it wider.

That is a wide-angle lens. Those who attend the game of the 3rd will testify that viewing access is very good (steep angles provide close access) also, the sidelines are no farther away than any big stadium that hosts soccer would be. Here is a much better depiction of how the field looks. A bonus addition is that all seats are seatback (no benches) Everyone who has visited the venue has come away with rave reviews.

That is one way of looking at it.
Wildcat Club members make the entire athletic department run. They absolutely should have the first priority on these tickets. If after all Wildcat Club members have a chance to get them if they want then open it up. But Wildcat Club members 100% deserve to get tickets if they want them first

We got to Tucson in 68 so I remember that stadium configuration. The long jump pit was where the cheerleaders stand now if I remember right. Did go down and see a track meet which was really cool to watch as they made the turn under the south stands.

Got some info from the ticket office on the game. Stadium is cashless. Never heard of a reverse ATM before - I suppose it puts a balance on some kind of card you can use at the snackbar.
We are looking forward to seeing you in the stands on Saturday, September 3rd in San Diego to watch the Wildcats take on San Diego State! Next Saturday’s game at Snapdragon Stadium will kick off at 12:30 p.m., with gates opening to the public at 10:30 a.m.
• Pre-Game/Stadium Entry: Fans are encouraged to arrive early on gameday, and gates will open two hours before kickoff, at 10:30 a.m. Clear bag policy will be in effect. For more details on the clear bag policy, please click here.
• Additional Information for Gameday: o Snapdragon Stadium is a cashless venue. Reverse ATM's are available for use throughout the stadium.
o Children two (2) and under do not need a ticket to enter the stadium; however, they cannot occupy a seat.

SDSU released their depth chart yesterday, but I'll let somebody else link that if they really want to. Eye chart with lots of "or...or...or" and dumb position nicknames, like "aztec" and "warrior." But, the deal is, Brady Hoke will do his physical thing with a lot of big bodies, double tights on offense, and a triple stack 3-3-5 defense. The starters in their base configurations (with traditional position names) should look like this (honors candidates in bold):
Offense:
LT Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson 6-6, 310 RS-JR
LG Cade Bennett 6-3, 315 SO
C Alama Uluave 6-2, 305 SR
RG Ross Ulugalu-Maseuli 6-4, 320 FR
RT Josh Simmons 6-6, 305 RS-FR
TE Mark Redman 6-6, 250 JR
TE Jay Rudolph 6-4, 245 JR
QB Braxton Burmeister 6-1, 205 SR
RB Chance Bell 5-10 200 SR WR Jesse Matthews 6-0, 190 SR
WR Tyrell Shavers 6-6, 210 Sr
Defense: DE Keshawn Banks 6-4, 255 SR
DT Justus Tavai 6-3, 290 SR DE Jonah Tavai 6-4 290 SR
SLB Cooper McDonald 6-4, 240 JR MLB Caden McDonald 6-3 235 SR
WLB Michael Shawcraft 6-2 220 SR
CB Dallas Branch 5-11 180 SR
CB Noah Avinger 6-1, 190 SO
S Cadarious Barfield 5-11 195 SR S Patrick McMorris 6-0, 210 SR
S C.J. Baskerville 6-2, 210 SO
Kicking:
K/P Jack Browning 5-11, 190 JR PR/KR Jordan Byrd 5-9 170 SR

Power running game but their offense is a weakness. Probably scored more points against us last year than anyone else they played. We need to not gamble as much on defense and we can be in it in the fourth quarter. BB will turn it over twice

I have my tickets and will be at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday to cheer on the Cats.
Having said that I am not expecting a win.........I refuse to chug the Kool-Aid.
We managed a whopping 230 yards of total offense against SDSU last year....and they have most of their defense back. I agree that we are much better at QB and WR, but we still have (possibly) the worst offensive line in the PAC12. The three starters we return (Fears, Morgan, and Donovan) got tossed around like styrofoam filled bean-bags by the SDSU DL last year. Unless there has been some miraculous offseason turnaround with those 3, I expect our new QB will be running for his life. Personally, I don't expect De Laura to last the season intact. The backups had better be prepared.
I still think we are looking at 4-5 years to turn the ship around. Most of Fischs first recruiting class will be redshirted this year. The bulk of them will not be upperclassmen until 2025.......Jedds 5th season.

Yep. I agree with most of this. Our area most in need of improvement was O line and we didnt get the help we need there. Another year of maturity should help, but SDSUs defensive line looks to be real good.
Our guys are, overall, still just too young. Fischs in game coaching is also suspect. SDSU should win by two TDs or more.
Hope I'm wrong.
The Arizona/SDSU Series
Posted: Mon Aug 29, 2022 4:09 pm
by TheCatInTheHat
This will be a bit of a project, so if anybody doesn't like history, best to move on. Arizona has a nice little 16 game series going with the Aztecs, with a 10-6 edge all-time. 6 of those games were played in the 1930s and 40s, so I'll just focus on the last 10.
In 1971, Arizona's Bob Weber brought his team to San Diego to play Don Coryell's Aztecs. But he had to follow-up a road game at BYU with the SDSU road game, which preceded the season finale at ASU. He also had to face future Cleveland Browns QB Brian Sipe, and he wound up on the wrong side of a 10-39 score. Arizona finished 5-6 to the Aztecs 6-5.
In 1974, new SDSU coach Claude Gilbert brought future Rams CB Monte Jackson to Tucson to face Arizona's second-year coach Jim Young in the season-opener for both teams. Young's Veer offense prevailed, 17-10. The Wildcats went on to a 9-2 season, while the Aztecs went 8-2-1.
1975 was probably the most impactful game of the series. Young came to a sold-out San Diego Stadium to face an undefeated and 13th ranked team, featuring future Bronco and Jets QB Craig Penrose, and a CB named Herm Edwards. In a thriller, the Cats won, 31-24, going on to another 9-2 (and again uninvited) season, while the Aztecs collapsed, losing their last two games to finish 8-3.
In 1977, Gilbert came to Arizona Stadium to face first-year coach Tony Mason. Gilbert's team was to go on beat #13 Florida St, finish with a #16 ranking themselves, and tally a 10-1 record (Fresno St), and also suffer a bowl-less fate. Mason's team pounded away and competed well in the 14-24 loss, eventually finishing the year at 5-7.
In 1979, due to scheduling problems in the Wildcats' second year in the Pac-10, the league designated a late-season game at San Diego St as a conference game. It was the middle of three home games for SDSU, sandwiched between comfortable wins over Wyoming and UTEP. For Arizona, it followed a brutal game at USC, with a slew of injuries resulting. 10-42 was the final, with SDSU finishing 8-3. Surprisingly (and maybe in a case of things evening out), the Wildcats rallied down the stretch to win at ASU and luck into a Fiesta Bowl bid with a 6-4-1 record. They then played a Dan Marino Pitt team tough, losing by 2 FGs.
1997 in Tucson was the first of three games Dick Tomey played against Ted Tollner SDSU teams, and he went 3-0. In what was something of a coming-out party for Ortege Jenkins, the Cats won a shootout 31-28, finishing 7-5 and going to the Insight Bowl, while Tollner's first team went 5-7.
The 1998 rematch in San Diego featured the best won/lost record of any Arizona team before or since at 12-1. The Wildcats had their way with the Aztecs 35-16, including Dennis Northcutt dancing on the Padres infield dirt (above) in the season opener. Arizona went on to beat Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl in the same stadium, while Tollner went 7-5 and got to the Las Vegas Bowl.
2000 was Tomey's last year, and his 5-6 team beating Tollner's 3-8 team 17-3 could maybe best be described as desultory.
2001 brought us 9/11...and John Mackovic. 12 days before the attacks, he had his first game as Arizona's head coach in San Diego. Tollner was still on the opposite sideline for SDSU...and Mackovic wore a suit and tie on the sidelines on a warm evening. QB Jason Johnson played pitch-and-catch with Bobby Wade well enough against their defense, and the Wildcats won 33-10. Pretty soon, nobody much cared. Arizona finished 5-6, and the Aztecs went 3-8.
That brings us to 2021. Jedd Fisch inheriting an undermanned team against a mature group under Brady Hoke. SDSU went 12-2 and to the Frisco Bowl last season, and we know about Arizona's 14-38 score and 1-11 record.
So, there it is. If we do wind up staying in the Pac and SDSU is added, there's already some water under the bridge between the two institutions.
