2023 Transfer Portal

Might as well do a separate thread for the transfer portal with it being a significant part of the offseason. Free agency has begun.
We already know about Jordan McCloud but Drake Anderson is also leaving. Not really surprised. It will be important to see what defenders will be available.
Feel free to delete if this is better in the arch rivals

I would expect a lot of transfers this year. Below is who I think is most likely to transfer:
QB: McCloud (gone), Cruz and maybe Plummer
RB: Anderson (gone), John and maybe Rocker
WR: Simpson, Clark, Joiner and maybe Greene and Jones (would hate to lose these two, but it makes sense)
TE: Miranda
OL: Hopefully no one
DL: Garcia, Siaumau-Sanito, Wilson Jr and maybe Shand
LB: Cage, Bohls, Edwards, Reed and maybe Martin
CB: Rutherford
S: Johnson and maybe Jaydin Young
I think we are currently 10 over the scholarship limit and I expect us to take around 7 more between transfers and remaining recruits. This would give us the flexibility we need and ultimately be a good thing for the program. I am sure some unexpected guys who have a role on this team will go as well, that's the college football world we are in now.

From the above the only guys I would hate see go are Simpson, Greene, Jones, Shand, Wilson and Martin.
All of them seem to be players who either have or could play at this level. I would think Greene could wait one more year for Cowing to exit but who knows. Always interesting in the off season

Strange how quickly things change in college football. When your skill position offensive starters in 2021 such as McCloud (Cruz, Plummer), Anderson, Rocker and Joiner get a combined 2 plays in 2022, and both of those were less than successful Wildcat runs by Joiner.
Seems Joiner has been around for quite a long time.

Nothing but the best wishes for him, and all the other starters last season who put up with so much the prior two seasons and ended on the end of the bench.

With JJ’s Foot and KC tweener size, I have to wonder if they will adjust their expectations from a program standpoint. Just don’t see them at the P5 level . G5 seems to be a fit for those guys to play

Probably got told that no one’s position is safe.
Hopefully we upgrade in a significant way through the portal.

Being that many of the offensive starters, especially the skill positions, from the prior season didn't even see the field last season probably gives them a clue about their positions too.
Fisch is no Dick Tomey, who was extremely loyal to starting players even when they sucked. Ortege Jenkins as a senior for one, and that kicker Scott McDonald (sp?) who was 1-10 kicking FGs as another.

Some of these guys are surprises like Barrs and Turner. A guy like Shane or Wilson can be replaced by Manoa (sane talent and experience)
I would think Sumlin’s last recruiting class will be gone. Not sure any of them have seen the field. Even guys like Mojo Weerts who played a position of need (LB) couldn’t find the depth chart.
Wish them all well

Brown, Turner, Barrs, and Shand transferring along with Harris and Young out of eligibility.
This is not good.
Why do our transfers not want to play for Nansen and Hunley anymore? Is there a problem with the staff or are they looking for better NIL deals.
It'd be nice if there was some actual investigative reporting on this.

This one hurts. I have to believe that money $NIL$ is at the root of this. I still don't believe that AZ is going to able to compete effectively in this new environment. Lloyd is going to have issues as well.......we are not going to compete with NIKEU for the 5 stars with the $NIL$ that Uncle Phil is throwing around

It might be the NIL money, but he has a good chance to land on a team to also compete for more than 6-6 season.

True, but its also true that the teams that win lots of games are the ones with lots of $NIL$ to throw around (Its not a coincidence)

Because our defense was so good this season?
Bring in kids who can play at a Power5 level and we won’t miss most of these guys.

Need guys who fit the scheme and system. When the young guys played more, the defense did more and did better. If guys who fit the system come in the defense will be better.
Hopefully NIL can keep Singer.

Singer and the rest of the players leaving the team don't have any friends apparently.

TMac getting a car and De Laura blowing up at Singer on the sideline might be two of the reasons Dorian is leaving.

T-Mac's best friends are the other 3 guys from his high school. He also just got a car.

The transfer portal is essentially unrestricted free agency with no rules......its the Wild Wild West on steroids. Whats to stop some SEC school with a good team with the exception of a QB from offering De Laura $1M to transfer??? With SEC TV$$$ and major NIL dough, nothing at all.
Looking out 15-20 years its not too difficult to envision College football, which is now dead as we know it, morphing into 2 or 3 Super conferences with 40-60 schools. Everyone else will end up dropping the sport. Unfortunately, I don't see the UA being in the group of 40-60

Kind of wonder what the deal was with the blow-up between Singer and de Laura. In any event, I was flipping around yesterday between watching our hoops game and hoping both UCLA and ASU would lose at home (no such luck.) And lo and behold, there was ASU's new football coach "inspiring" their fans at halftime. Maybe he'll eventually be really good, but he'll have shackles on to start with, and I was shaking my head. If I was a big booster, even for a high school team, his over-eager little first job persona wouldn't exactly inspire any of my confidence. Don't know if he thinks he fired a shot across our bow with Singer, or if it just fell into his lap. And if Singer's an absolute saint and there are other life circumstances that make it a better situation for him, that's fine. But if there is any bad blood or bad attitude, I don't care how good somebody is; I'm happy to move on.

An asu booster just donated one million after Dillingham was hired. I think asu got their coach. He is an alum and most likely will not leave. He still has not coached a game yet but their program is in a better place than it was a month ago.
