University of Arizona freshman quarterback Zach Werlinger has been named a finalist for the National Football Foundation High School National Scholar-Athlete Award. A graduate of Basha High School, he was nominated by the NFF Valley of the Sun (Ariz.) Chapter. Five scholar-athletes will be selected from 36 finalists and honored at the NFF Annual Chapter Awards Luncheon, presented by Under Armour, in New York, N.Y. on Dec. 9.
While playing for Basha, Werlinger threw for 3,242 yards with a 62 percent completion rate and 25 touchdowns in 2013. He also rushed for 365 yards and five scores while earning all-conference, all-district, all-state and all-academic honors. He was the 2013 Division 1, Section 1 and Chandler USD Offensive Player of the Year and holds school records for touchdown passes in a game and season, passing yards in a season and career and passes completed in a season and career. He was president of the National Honor Society and a U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete.
