Official Open Tryouts for Linebacker Poistion
The injuries are ridiculous. Three LB starters and two back-up LBs are injured. Do we even have enough people for a 2 deep? Arizona Athletics might want to send an e-mail out to the student population.

We might finally see Ware and maybe they move the other guy back

This is bad to see a thread like this in Week 2 of a byeless schedule. Very, very bad.

We will just play a 4-2-5 until Scooby gets back

Hopefully we are in better shape for UCLA.
Scooby won't be back, but some of the other LBers should be GTG.

49, I'm a big fan of you, but we don't play a 4 man front in classic terms. I know that we may present 4 or even 5 guys on the line, but that is Casteel mixing it up with more athletic guys in the box. That's why RR likes Casteel's defense.azcat49 wrote:We will just play a 4-2-5 until Scooby gets back

Oh I agree completely with you. They justvslide Turituri down snd ge is that 4th man on the end. Then they just moveca guy like Magliore down to backer and play an extra DB. I have seen Casteel doing a lot of this since Svooby wemt down and even last year with Scooby. Remember they basically moved Bondo down and played the extra DB.
Non traditional for sure and I think we are teally thinking thevsame thing. Much more of an athletic look

Of our non-Scooby tackles by LB's this year and last....
- 68 by 3-stars (Turituri & Miller)
61 by 2-stars (mostly Ippolito w/ a bit of Morgan)
65 by walk-ons

Re: Official Open Tryouts for Linebacker Poistion
As Wyo-cat says, this is what we run most of the time anyways, even with scooby in there. We don't run 4 down lineman, but we still line up a 4th guy on the line more often than not. People seem to want to bang on this strategy, but with football at all levels being spread out and pass-friendly, it's the best way to go. Bend but don't break is going to become more and more prevalent at both the college and nfl level as teams move away from tradition pro sets and power running offenses. Athletic, undersized LB's and athletic, oversized safeties are the secret to making it work.azcat49 wrote:We will just play a 4-2-5 until Scooby gets back

Really feel for Gregory. RS Senior being counted on and gets injured. Thought Ippollitto was a relatively big blow, but putting it in perspective now that we got the injury bug it really hurt.
Re: Official Open Tryouts for Linebacker Poistion
So who exactly is hurt and for how long?
Re: Official Open Tryouts for Linebacker Poistion
Scooby 4 weeks
Gregory 2-4 weeks
Ippolito Out
Tui looks like he has a groin pull which are not fun in this instance lol

The question now is - who isn't hurt? That one would probably take less time to answer.qwertyus wrote:So who exactly is hurt and for how long?

Cobb must be terrible at LB if we haven't moved him back to that position at this point.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Yea. So so weird for our two rockstar LB recruits from a year ago to be absolute no-shows in a situation like this. I mean what the hell?!Chicat wrote:Cobb must be terrible at LB if we haven't moved him back to that position at this point.
Re: Official Open Tryouts for Linebacker Poistion
3 x 4*'s and not one can crack the four deep?

3 kids from Salesian and ine is gone (Carr) and the other has been injured and maybe unmotivated to learn the playbook and get stronger (Ware).
I think it is Telling that Carr has not been moved back to defense. JC must have zero confidence in those two scheme wise

Re: Official Open Tryouts for Linebacker Poistion
I think RR really wants him at fullback. He hasn't had a big hammer in the backfield since he's been here and he's already shown that he wants Cobb on the field in certain situations. Also, I think that this comes back some to the offensive line working out the bugs in the system. You put a big guy in the backfield to lead for Wilson and that takes some stress off the line, and RR also isn't afraid to throw him the ball if the situation calls for it. Looking forward to games like UCLA, they've got a lot of athleticism and physicality on defense and having a powerful guy like Cobb in the backfield can help neutralize the constant pressure that they showed last year.Chicat wrote:Cobb must be terrible at LB if we haven't moved him back to that position at this point.
RR said that they'd discussed moving him back to cover for the injuries but said there's so much for him to learn. I think they've got some pretty big plans for him as part of the backfield.
