The comments section on bruinsnation is awesome. They all take turns trying to outdo each other with how little they watch the UCLA games ("I only read about the game, but..." "I was flipping channels and accidentally came across the game, and...", "I totally don't care at all about UCLA basketball and that's why I comment multiple times on every story posted on a UCLA basketball blog", etc) yet they take offense at the suggestion that people don't go to the games?

Bruinsnation: "The lack of fan support is proof that (insert dumb nickname for Alford) has sullied coach Wooden's legacy and needs to be burned at the stake!"
Sean Miller: "Yeah I also noticed people weren't at the game"
Bruinsnation: "SCREW YOU UCLA IS THE BEST SCHOOL EVER HOW DARE YOU"

Most UCLA fans care far more about football than basketball. I mentioned a couple weeks back that the small group of UCLA alums I work with recently couldn't name UCLA's basketball coach or even a single player on their roster.

Well if Ucla fans don't drive a couple miles to paisley, they won't be in Maui. I bet they're outnumbered by unlv fans.

Apparently my fears were unfounded. I should have known only an idiot would think Rice was better than Alford.

Might be more fans in Maui than Pauley

This guy sounds really bitter. Didn't get into UCLA I guess.

I expect to hear that from Beachcat, not ESPN. The way he said it seemed overly harsh.

I watched a good chunk of the first half, neither team looked that good. LOL @ daddy's quote in the ESPN recap of the game, I guess the blow explains his eccentric shot selection.:

"It was a game I couldn't give Bryce any kind of blow because of the pressure, so we've got some concerns moving forward with that. But I thought both of them showed a lot of toughness."

You can see the upside in Zimmerman. I've heard praises of his athleticism and motor, but watching him last night he reminded me of Bash, just a bit taller. Like, watching an agile player in slow motion. He hit a nice corner three and rebounded well from what I saw.

We need UCLA to get some more OOC wins so it's good they were able to get the W. Hopefully UCLA can show us something today against Kansas.

No, we don't. This has been discussed ad nauseum. We just need some other Pac teams to be competitive year to year. Makes very little difference what UCLA is doing. Their performance has very little bearing on AZ's season.

How so exactly? They're a perpetually unranked program with little to no national following. Not seeing how UCLA being good is any better than Cal, Oregon, Utah, or Stanford being good. Again, as long as there's a regular core of three to four strong Pac teams, it doesn't mean all that much which teams those are. Just like it doesn't mean that much that UCLA is going to get steamrolled by Kansas later tonight.

I don't care about them going 13-0 OOC, but going 7-6 OOC with losses to Monmouth and UNLV and ... does hurt us when they manage to nick us by 2 at Pauley.

We can say it doesn't matter, but I remember us being so close to a #1 seed last year that just a couple more OOC wins by our PAC competitors might have pushed us over the hump in their computations. So yeah games against this middle level competition like UNLV I'd rather they won. In fact a two point win where they look like crap is probably just about the sweet spot for me.

You changed your argument a little, SC. Of course it hurts us when we lose! To any team, not just UCLA. And whether it's by 2 or 20.

UCLA is middle-level competition, relatively speaking, just like UNLV, so the winner of that game has little bearing on AZ's fortunes. As long as we beat UCLA twice this year (or three times if we see them in the Pac tourney), the rest of UCLA's games matter very little for us.

that's not how rpi / bpi works. a win over a strong ucla team is more beneficial to us than beating a weak ucla team (and moreso on the road, but that's besides the point here). a stronger pac is better for our players' development, and more importantly, our seeding, than a weak one. rising tide and such.
