That was very interesting how they determined the date looking at tree rings and centuries old Japanese documents.
Think it's been common knowledge for year that the Pacific NW has been overdue for the big one.
Can't imagine many of those old homes in Seattle surviving even a smaller quake, especially those built on top of the old city. That underground tour was very cool.
As a former journalist, former geology minor, I am currently suffering from both a knotted stomach and a science/writing boner... Holy shit that article is awesome!
Read to the end. I doubt I need to say that here, as anyone willing to click a New Yorker link is smart enough to know the value of reading to an article's conclusion, but, seriously, the second half is better than any suspense film.
Again, Holy Shit!

Reminds me of a story. Several years ago I was staying in Provo and working around Eureka, UT. Listened to KSL on the radio while driving back and forth. One morning all the callers to the local talk show were commenting on a pretty good sized earthquake that occurred along the Wasatch earlier in the morning (which I apparently slept thru). The one caller that i remember was a new bride who was calling from the bridal suite of the Hotel Utah in SLC. Seems that she and her new husband were just consummating the new marriage at the exact time that the quake hit. Her comment on the radio was: "everyone told me that the earth would shake but I didn't believe them!" Took me half an hour to stop laughing. True story.

My wife had read the article and gave me grief about a 3 day visit to Seattle/Tacoma.

2 confirmed deaths. Said to be some moderate to heavy damage in some areas. Only a couple dozen miles away from the earthquake in 2009 that killed 300 people.
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.
