i know you know that i feel this way already, and maybe you do too to a certain extent, but RPI doesnt really true up until beginning of February -- about a month after all the conf play has started.scumdevils86 wrote:#52 in the RPI currently.

Re: 2015/6 Polls
We just had a bad SOS outcome. We missed a bump with MSU, Mizzou became terrible after we signed them up and UNLV isn't what we'd thought they would be. Even Gonzaga losing to UCLA hurts.
That said, ASU over UNLV and UCLA over Zaga really just restructures thing to where the games that will have the big impact are in front of us, not OOC.

Re: 2015/6 Polls
Yeah the projected RPI of every team we play in conference is top 70 except Washington St and Stanford.
Re: 2015/6 Polls
Providence disrespected at 14 in the coaches poll. I think we are a better team than them, but what beef could we have if they were ahead of us?
Re: 2015/6 Polls
I think it's kind of a joke that Duke is ahead of Villanova. Both have two losses, with Nova's being to the #3 and #5 teams and Dukes being to #12 and an unranked. Same goes for Kentucky being ranked ahead of 'Nova as well.
Nice to be back in the top 10, let's hope we can go on a major tear to start Pac play and stay there for a long while

Yeah, we knew that. You've taught us well. We just devour and discuss all that we can about U of A hoops, even when we know it isn't all that meaningful.97cats wrote:i know you know that i feel this way already, and maybe you do too to a certain extent, but RPI doesnt really true up until beginning of February -- about a month after all the conf play has started.scumdevils86 wrote:#52 in the RPI currently.

It's a shame Stanford couldn't knock off Texas. A lot of good but not great teams in the Pac this year.scumdevils86 wrote:Yeah the projected RPI of every team we play in conference is top 70 except Washington St and Stanford.

Maybe we can be that great one. The consistently difficult rpi of the competition should help us...if we do what we need to do.carolinacat wrote:It's a shame Stanford couldn't knock off Texas. Re: 2015/6 Polls
UCLA is going to be coming off a likely sweep of the Washington schools the prior week. We'll be coming off the ASU game. Gut check time for our team.azcat49 wrote:Just hoping we can find a way to win 2 of those first 3 road games of the conference season
Our depth should (and could) really help us at ASU. They're talented but a little small inside with very little depth. I think Ristic's offensive game in the starting lineup will benefit us more than Tarc starting, even though we need his defense and the five fouls he gives us. Ristic's offensive game must get ASU's attention defensively where they're a little weak inside. Rustic can have a big game and get them in foul trouble early, which should be our strategy. That will free up Anderson & Tolley to start cleaning up later in the game for our famous "wear down."
The last two years, ASU has shot the ball out of their minds from distance (especially last year in Tempe). They don't have quite the shooters as last season but are more athletic. Holder vs. Allen at the point should be a good matchup. This game is also an opportunity for Trier to have a big game. IMO we match up well with ASU as long as we stick to the coach's expected game plan (pound the ball inside) and we knock down open perimeter shots. Anderson vs. Goodman should be a good matchup as well. I doubt it's a game we overlook.

Me neither. But their schedule is pretty weak other than the games in California.Chicat wrote:I don't understand why Providence is ranked below us.
They caught us at a perfect time (1st game w/out Tarc) and were still lucky to win. We had a six point lead with a few minutes to play.
I do think we're the better team but if I had a vote I'd put them one spot ahead of us.

We should learn to chill. All of the things that we fuss about happen to other teams too. We are just too self-absorbed to notice.

Re: 2015/6 Polls
It's not like people got together in a room and decided Arizona should be ranked higher than Providence. It just came out that way in the wash. A good number no doubt ranked Providence higher, and I wouldn't doubt if some voted differently with Tarc's first game out and Arizona's subsequent improvement in mind.

Re: 2015/6 Polls
This probably sounds absurd, but we're better than Providence. Provided we're at full strength, we'd beat them in a rematch.
Re: 2015/6 Polls
I imagine because where they each started the year. Teams usually get the benefit of the doubt in first or early losses. The reality of it is that the Cats played pitifully in that game and still had a chance to tie on their finally possession (until the Cats literally handed the ball to Providence as they had done multiple times during the game). I am not sure fans should lose much sleep on rankings in December.Chicat wrote:I don't understand why Providence is ranked below us.
Re: 2015/6 Polls
Still 8 in AP. Utes and Bruins also ranked. Coaches flip Cats and Heels, placing us 7. But keep UCLA out of the top 25. Oddly, they rank Gonzaga ahead of UCLA.

Up to #6 in the coaches poll. AP moves a little later today. We're the only Pac 12 team ranked although six teams from the conference received votes including Colorado, Oregon State & USC (but not UCLA).

Re: 2015/6 Polls
It's pretty remarkable that in January, Arizona is in the top 10 and no other PAC team is ranked.
Ya know, considering that the conference is up for grabs and that we are easily ending up 3-5th according to Roth(CAL)stein.

Re: 2015/6 Polls
Yea that is absurd. Two road losses to two tough fringe top 25 type of teams. One in 4OT and the other at the buzzer. I guessed 18 in another thread.

Re: 2015/6 Polls
Seriously, though, what are rankings in January even worth? They don't help our tourney seed. We just need two wins this week, and that won't be easy.
Re: 2015/6 Polls
I look at rankings from a purely cosmetic standpoint. It looks good to recruits and people outside of Arizona notice your team. Not necessarily bragging rights, but you get more respect and attention, which our program deserves. Do they help w seedings? Maybe, maybe not. I tend to think if a committee is sitting there looking at all the advanced numbers, and team A has been ranked 16-20 all year has the same numbers and resume as team B who have been 10-14 all year, team B is going to get the higher seed because subconsciously you are going to associate them with being better.

I hope you're wrong and that the committee does what they're supposed to: base the seedings on the appropriate metrics and indices.rgdeuce wrote:I look at rankings from a purely cosmetic standpoint. I'd rather have an RPI in the top 10 than be ranked in the top 10.
Re: 2015/6 Polls
Being ranked gets you on ESPN. That's the only real advantage that I see. Keeps your name in the news.

We can debate how important it is to be ranked at this point in the season... but I think we can agree that there is no advantage to being unranked.Beachcat97 wrote:I hope you're wrong and that the committee does what they're supposed to: base the seedings on the appropriate metrics and indices.rgdeuce wrote:I look at rankings from a purely cosmetic standpoint. Re: 2015/6 Polls
Oh, and another thing about these polls. It's ridiculous that only one Pac team is ranked. All of these teams are at least as deserving as the bunch of east coast and midwest schools currently ranked in the top 25. USC and Cal and Oregon and UCLA would do just fine against Nova, Xavier, WVU, Texas A&M, ISU, Pitt, Baylor, Butler, etc.
Re: 2015/6 Polls
You listed a whole variety of schools in this one. Top 10 to fringe top 25....Beachcat97 wrote:Oh, and another thing about these polls. It's ridiculous that only one Pac team is ranked. Of the teams you listed I agree with you on A&M, ISU, Pitt, Baylor, Butler.
But Nova, Xavier, and WVU are all better than every other team in the PAC in my opinion.
