Just your typical early February severe thunderstorms here in the Chicago area....

If this keeps up I'll be mowing it with a machete by Easter.

Put my tomato plants in yesterday.

This morning had to scrape ice off the windshield.

Only got up to 53 yesterday.

Last year I don't think I turned my heater on at all in February.

Poor tomato plants.

I'm sure those are much more accurate than the Atmosheric Studies weather station at PAS. Which shows 28.5

I have a rain gauge in my backyard, and received 1.25" last Sunday. That national weather service at the Santa Maria airport received 0.80", which is only a mile or so away.

Tucson has the concrete effect for heat in town, so I imagine it must do something with the cold too.

Gotta love the depths of winter. For the last 4 months I've been hearing how El Niño will give the southwest an abnormally cold and wet winter. Uh huh.

I for one am tired of r el Nino talk and wish they would just say they were wrong. Central coast is below average for rain this season.

However we are looking at record heat today so the view will be tremendous on campus.

Unreal, gonna be pushing mid 90s by Tuesday. 20 degrees above average. Normal high temp for February in Tucson averages out at 68 degrees. The way the month is shaping up it'll be more like 83. By far the warmest February ever seen in Arizona I imagine.

In Tucson in February the temperature on average gets above 80 two or three times. This month it'll be over 20 times per the forecast and what has already been recorded.

I was believing it all in mid-late Dec. it was down right chilly. But the last couple of weeks, it's been really warm. I keep telling myself that there will be one more cold snap, but I'm losing confidence in that every time I see mid to high 80's in the forecast.

I honestly don't remember weather this bad. Invariably there's a brief period of time in late January or February most years where it gets warm for a couple of days but then it reverts back to normal. But nope, for the last 2 plus weeks it's been almost 20 degrees above average with no rain and the forecast into mid March is exactly the same. Strangest thing I have ever seen in 30 years here.

Local weather guys have quit talking about El Nino for once.

February has fizzled out, back to the drought days, or even worse. Only 1/2" at my house this month, with no more rain in the forecast this month.

However, as with the last 3 prior drought years, the weather has been fantastic.

If it's not going to rain, might as well be nice.

I'm supposed to fly out to the University of Oregon tomorrow morning to give a lecture on Thursday. Blizzard starts at 6 AM. How much you want to bet American Airlines doesn't cancel the flight until after they get everybody to the airport sitting at the gate? I have no idea why they don't just cancel flights a couple hours beforehand. I have to try because it would be bad form on my part if the flight somehow leaves without me.

They don't purposely wait to make things as inconvenient as possible. Weather delays and cancellations can change rapidly and aren't really controlled by..well...people.

The problem is that if they preemptively cancel a bunch of flights and the storm shifts slightly and produces nothing, then they just lost a bunch of money and pissed off a bunch of people. If they wait too long and strand a bunch of people, same thing. So they have to walk a fine line.

Meanwhile, we're under a blizzard warning, and it is fucking nasty outside. Predicting 12+" at my house . . . . and that's just for my wife! (ba-dum chhh)

I decided to test this theory, and let's just say the pessimists like 97cats and me are right, and ASUHATER is as full of shit as American Airlines.

We had near-blizzard conditions and still showed "on time" status an hour before departure. I cancelled my cab and, from my couch at home, I called and talked to an agent, who confirmed that the flight was on time and that I should go to the airport because the plane for my flight out of Champaign was in the air arriving on time from Chicago, which was also indicated online. So I called an agent I know at the airport, who told me that we had no other plane available than the one coming from Chicago, but that he didn't think the flight from Chicago was actually in the air. 50 minutes before my departure time, the flight from Chicago was cancelled, but they continued to show an on-time departure for my plane-less flight. I didn't fall for it and stayed on my couch rather than driving to the airport during a white-out.

Sure enough, they waited until departure time to announce the cancelation of my flight. I don't know how many of my fellow passengers are stranded at the terminal in these gawd-awful conditions while I luxuriate at home bathing in warm donkey milk.

There's a lot to get angry about with airlines, but the only two things that you should never be angry or upset about are weather delays and cancellations (airline can't change the weather and it has nothing to do with them) and maintenance delays or cancellations (it's about the safety of people on the plane...why would them assuring your safety bother you?)

I know Merkin is convinced El Niño was a hoax this year, but here in the Chicago area we had our warmest winter in a decade; eight degrees warmer than last year and with 60% less snow.

Set a record yesterday 88 at 4pm, old record 81.

February, one of our wettest months, had less than 1" total.

One thing I learned over the years, don't change your plans based on long term forecasts but a series of storms could be coming.
