They are predicting a La Nina for next rainy season, meaning dry, so expect flooding.

Last night was pretty intense. Houston is getting smoked again. Parts of west Houston got 20 inches overnight. We got around 4 at my house. There are currently 70 reported high water rescues underway. We spent an hour in the bathroom with a mattress over us as a tornado passed right over our house. Nothing worse than waking up to the "find shelter immediately" alarm on your phone.

I-10 closed east of Tucson; 12-vehicle pileup reported
Interstate 10 is closed in both directions east of Tucson from U.S. Highway 191 to Lordsburg, New Mexico, because of blowing dust.
Authorities are reporting a series of weather related crashes on I-10 at San Simon. A total of 12 vehicles are involved in the crashes, according to DPS spokesman Trooper Kameron Lee.
The vehicles involve a tractor-trailer rig, San Simon Fire truck and a DPS SUV.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said the alternate route for drivers during the closure is 110 miles long.
For eastbound motorists, traffic is being routed on U.S. 191 north to U.S. 70 in Safford. Drivers continue into New Mexico and enter I-10 at Lordsburg.

Get out the coat. Phoenix is supposed to reach 117 on Saturday. I can actually handle the day. It's after dark when it doesn't cool down and still 100 at midnight. True. When it's that hot in Phoenix the low is 90. In Tucson it still gets down to 75 at night.Catintheheat wrote:Get out the coat. Phoenix is supposed to reach 117 on Saturday. Re: The Weather is Crazy
The size of rain drops varies? Yesterday as I drove in a sudden and unpredicted rain storm, each drop made a loud thump and a splat the size of a water balloon. I got home right when it turned into hail, and the most intense rain storm I've ever seen. Like news footage of a hurricane. Lasted an hour, with flash floods and cars floating down the street.
When the storm started, I was listening to a story on NPR about how accurate the science of weather prediction has gotten, and how the only challenge now is effectively using social media to announce forecasts of extreme weather. It wasn't until this storm was half over before any weather service even acknowledged its existence.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
Yes, and it's because of wind.Longhorned wrote:The size of rain drops varies?
When a rain drop forms by condensing around the dust/dirt particles in the air it becomes heavy and starts to fall. If there is an updraft in the storm that droplet will rise back up and collect more water. It will do this repeatedly until the weight of the droplet overcomes the force of the air flowing upward into the thunderhead.
If the top of the thunderhead is high enough the water will freeze. It will then melt as it falls back into the warmer air down below. But if enough ice accumulates it won't completely melt and it will fall as hail. The higher the top of the thunderhead and the more vigorous and violent the winds, the more times that hailstone will rise up collecting more water which then freezes even more making the hailstone bigger and bigger.
Now imagine how much force the updrafts have to be to cause a hailstone to rise so high so often that it becomes baseball or softball size. That's one mean motherfucking thunderstorm......

Fascinating.
Speaking of rain, weather guy last night said we received 65% of normal during the rainy season which is now over.
Which is not as bad as it sounds since that is the highest amount we have received in 5 years.
Thanks a lot El Nino!

Today's forecast high of 110° would break the old record of 108° set back in 1912, according to 4WARN Meteorologist Jeff Beamish. If temps reach 110° again today, it would mark the earliest Tucson's recorded three straight 110°+ days.

I remember a heat wave in the 1970's that was, I think, 10 days in a row above 110, and the high was 117.
Who is telling you that 112 is a record high?

Sunday and Monday the 19th and 20th are going to be absolutely brutal. When it is 120 degrees humidity almost doesn't matter. I wonder if the airports will shut down again.
118-121 in Phoenix
114-117 in Tucson.
Both are within a degree of or will break all time records.
