I've been called for that type of stiff arm, in rugby it's supposed to be fully extended prior to contact. One time was right in the guy's face...probably would have been kicked out of the game in this day and age.azgreg wrote:

Yeah, so many fouls it isn't funny. The kid was going out of his way to knock guys down, not just trying to score. He wasn't in beast mode, he was in bully mode.wyo-cat wrote:

The size mismatch with everyone else on the field is what made that kid stand out, not anything skillful or knowledgeable about the game.

Re: The Random Thoughts Thread
Can't imagine that is even fun for his teammates since they never get the ball.
When my oldest son was 8 or 9 he played on this city rec basketball team. Note "rec", not "club".
He had a player on his team called Victor who was pretty good. The team's one play was to give the ball the Victor. Victor would score more than the entire other team did combined. My son never scored a point, same with most other players. As soon as he would touch the ball, it would be "Give the ball to Victor!".
So when my youngest son became old enough I decided to coach his team. We didn't win a lot of games, but all 10 players on that team scored during the year. That was my goal. Took the very last game for the very worst player to finally score, some slow, fat uncoordinated kid. That kid ended up being a star football player in high school and signed a scholarship with some school.
Pussification of American sports!

Re: The Random Thoughts Thread
I was Victor when I was 9. Worse yet, my dad was the coach. I wasn't old enough to be embarrassed yet. I can't imagine the parents of my teammates up in the stands. Our one play was for me to bring the ball up the court and score it. My teammates weren't even told to clear out, probably because that would have given them something to do.Merkin wrote:Can't imagine that is even fun for his teammates since they never get the ball.

Very rarely was there a game when my 20-point performances were supplemented by even a single basket from one of my teammates. And we lost every game we played.
Boy, did I ever deserve to get exposed in later years when defenders got old enough to learn from their coaches that I couldn't go left.
I've joked in the Basketball thread about running a play where four teammates hold hands around the ball handler to keep the defenders away. You know where I got that funny image? Yep. Fortunately, holding hands was where my teammates drew the line, so we just stuck with our one play of me taking the ball to the hole unassisted.

The kid probably can't make a proper rugby pass, he's always carrying the ball in one arm.RichardCranium wrote:Yeah, so many fouls it isn't funny. The kid was going out of his way to knock guys down, not just trying to score. He wasn't in beast mode, he was in bully mode.wyo-cat wrote:

Greatest profound sense of "what did I just spend all my money on?" upon leaving a business establishment
A night at the strip club vs Whole Food Deli/Salad Bar/Warm prepared food counter.
Both meet the needs of human desires, but man, I think I have to go with Whole Foods. The strip club is way more transparent ($20/dance vs 8.99 a lb and no scale until you check out)

The only place in Philadelphia to buy beer (liquor law issue) is the Foodery. You make your own six pack by choosing your own beers, none of which have prices marked. You always end up with a $45 six-pack.CalStateTempe wrote:Greatest profound sense of "what did I just spend all my money on?" upon leaving a business establishment

Why do they talk about "the luck of the Irish"? I mean, the weather is cool and cloudy and rainy all the time. The English have been fucking them over since the Norman Invasion. They lost a third of their people in the 1800s from starvation during the potato famine. A bunch of them came to America where they were treated like dog crap.
It must be one of those reverse things. Like calling a bald guy "curly".
