Reference calls to people who worked at USC and Tennessee basically rendered Kiffen unhireable

Though Kiffin’s name was brought up for multiple jobs across the last three years, nearly all of it was speculation and smoke rather than genuine interest in him. One person with knowledge of the matter, who had investigated Kiffin for a job, said reference calls to people who worked at USC and Tennessee basically rendered him unhireable.

We don't have the balls for that kind of move even though it would payoff in big ways

Kelly make large programs make a move? Maybe A&M, ND or Tenn available. The college game is more fun with him, hope he comes back.

If Chipper would consider coming here after next season, do you think we should hire him if the team goes 5-7?
Probably not, since next season would represent improvement over this past season's 3-9 campaign - meaning RR would deserve a raise and extension.

Re: Coaching searches 2017
No because it would of been a stepping stone job for him. Kelly would be shooting for high profile job with his resume if he decide to come back to coach college football. UA wouldn't be a likeable destination for him.Harvey Specter wrote:His post was speculating on a suggested future move, not a past one. The only way RR will get a contract extension is to survive the 2017 season and make a final push in the 2018 season. That were I would draw the line.

Re: Coaching searches 2017
Keeping RR past 2017 is as good as giving him a raise and extension, because he will be guaranteed the last installment of his retention bonus - which will not be available for the next coach. That is why I want to see more than just marginal improvement next year to keep him around.cordera89 wrote:No because it would of been a stepping stone job for him. Arizona is unfortunately a stepping stone job for virtually any coach we would hire; it would have been for RR too if he had enough success to attract offers from high profile jobs. The only chance to avoid that would be to hire coach with previous ties to and affinity for the area, or one who falls in love with the desert and establishes roots here (ala Lute). That is pure luck... we need some.
I seriously doubt we could get Kelly... but it would be worth a shot. One thing is for sure... I think he will decide to come back to college football whether he wants to or not - because he's not getting hired by another NFL team anytime soon.
Re: Coaching searches 2017
I would be extremely hesitant to hire any coach that had a show cause order dropped on him. Kelly's has expired, but that's attention you don't necessarily want.

Jim Tressel's show cause order expired last week. Helluva coach! As they say in show business, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Re: Coaching searches 2017
Cal's AD finances are a mess. No way they can afford Kelly, although he doesn't need the money.
A search for Dykes’ replacement is expected to begin immediately, with hopes the school will have its new coach in place before the end of this week when recruiting heats up again.
Not sure how that can happen. Being a state school, they need to advertise and such for a standard period.

This does sound familiar, doesn't it?
Wilner:
However, Dykes has not-so-secretly interviewed for several coaching vacancies in the past 13 months. Recently, he was reportedly a candidate for the Baylor vacancy.
Dykes’ support within the Cal administration has waned because of his wandering eye and because of the Bears’ poor performance on the field in 2016

Dykes' wandering eye has been strictly about extorting more money/years out of Cal. RR's flirtations have been about the fact he considers UofA a stepping stone back to something "bigger".

I think both of them have believed they were better than their current jobs, and both want more money.
If RR was "just about a bigger job", he would either have left for So Carolina (i.e., if he saw it as a bigger job) OR not even interviewed for the job. I'll always believe he would have bolted if only they had offered him a pay raise.
Regardless, I am not sure it matters. Any more than either of our wives would care about the reason we were trying to bang another chick at the office.

Re: Coaching searches 2017
Could be. If so, he needs to look back at what Bama was for most of the many years (sans Stallings) between Bear and Saban... because that's the range for what he would have done there & they'd have run his ass off after a few seasons. If he thinks he'd be doing anything close to what Saban has he is really delusional...Chicat wrote:I think RR very much regrets saying no to Alabama. Saban has killed it at Bama for a lot of reasons... not the least of which is he sends a TON of guys to the NFL. No gimmicky schemes.
I don't think he believes this, but IMO he should have never left Morgantown.
I have always held him a lot more responsible for his failure at Michigan than most here do, or used to.
