The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."

It's sad for me because of my extreme dislike for Roger Goodell, but I'm sure he'll chuck someone else under the bus. That said, how moronic is he? You'd need an IQ in single digits not to see how this one was going to turn out when the video broke.

There is no excuse for not demanding that tape. If AP and TMZ could get it, the NFL certainly could. Goodell and the entire front office of the Ravens should have resigned or been fired by now.

Is the fact they actually got the tape an excuse for not demanding it? It's looking like that's what happened. Maybe that's Goodell's master plan. They can't fault us for not demanding it if we actually got it.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- A New Jersey prosecutor has defended his office's handling of the Ray Rice case and says allowing him into a pretrial intervention program was done after careful consideration.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain told the Press of Atlantic City he wanted to clear up misinformation and restore trust in his agency.

He said Rice wouldn't have faced jail time if he had gone to trial on third-degree aggravated assault charges after he punched his then-fiancee and knocked her unconscious.

So...first, what occurred here was definitely a battery (the actually punching someone) and probably also an assault (creating the apprehension of immediate harm) so I'm somewhat wondering if the prosecutor is getting what he's talking about jumbled up.

Just kind of mind blowing that that kind of battery would be so easily dismissed without the possibility of jail time.

[A quick look at third degree aggravated assault gives this as a theoretical punishment: Conviction of a third degree crime carries a potential prison sentence of at least three years up to five years, and a fine that could be up to $15,000.]

Not really.

When you go to court and all you have to do is prove the crime. You don't need her testimony to do that.

Show video, case over.

The question is, if she chooses not to press charges can the case go forward? My guess is in these kinds of domestic violence situations, there are situations where it can go forward.

Prosecutors have learned to keep going with the cases even if the wife won't testify. That was the policy of the City of Tucson when I was involved as a mediator for misdemeanor offenses. It is pretty well known through the cycle of domestic violence that spouses won't testify whether they are afraid or whether they are now in the "honeymoon" period that follows these acts of violence.

Seriously, **** Goodell. Bill Simmons has a great article on Grantland detailing how tough a question it is as to whether he's just that incompetent or whether this is all intentional.

So they've generally got pretty good statistics on this kind of stuff so I thought something like this might eventually come out...

TRENTON, N.J. -- The pretrial intervention program offered to Ray Rice in the assault case involving his wife was granted in less than 1 percent of all domestic violence assault cases from 2010-13 that were resolved, according to New Jersey Judiciary data obtained Friday by "Outside the Lines."

Rice and his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, were arrested on Feb. 15 and charged with simple assault after an incident at an Atlantic City casino. Janay's charges were later dropped, but on March 27, an Atlantic City grand jury increased Rice's assault charge to aggravated assault-bodily injury in the third degree causing bodily harm and one count of simple assault. If convicted of the felony, Rice faced a penalty of three to five years in prison.

I didn't see it, but this seems to be the overall reaction(correct me if I'm wrong if you watched):

He said he was taking responsibility, then proceeded to spend the remainder of the press conference not taking any sort of responsibility.

It's the exact issue he always has. He says a PR savvy thing that is completely not reflected in any action. Like the time he pledged to respond to the head trauma claims of ex players, then proposed adding two games to the schedule.
