You can challenge it but it's damn near impossible to get it overturned (those plays in general). It's clear he got an arm around it but they may not say he had possession, and then the ball disappears from sight.

I've absolutely heard refs in other games make this argument: the play is dead immediately when a player who is lying on the ground (and thus instantaneously down) gathers the ball into himself.

True, it's not like any of those refs are strong enough to dig the ball out from the pile, much less extricate any players.

But replay showed a clear cover by Bruno of the ball. Who had it afterwards should be beside the point.

I agree it should be. College doesn't require you to be touched to be down. Play instantaneously ends when you are lying on the ground and bring the ball into your hands.
