How does Guerrero keep his job.
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
His bosses understand he is a bureaucrat. Sports don't drive ucla's reputation so it doesn't matter much as long as they graduate players, don't get embarrassed, and don't get any violations

Im thinking this game on Saturday is a must win for Alford's career at UCLA. Only two games left on UCLA's schedule that are surefire NCAA teams and they are Arizona and ASU, which I dont exactly think we have much of a shot at winning.

I wonder if we'll ever know if all three players are equally culpable, of if one of them was the actual bonehead and the other two just happened to be along for the ride.
Well, now we know why Lavar cut ties. He had to know this was coming.

Will make it easier to fire Alford at the end of the year.

So Bug, if we agree that CSA is likely gone at the end of this year, who do you think or is likely to replace him?MrBug708 wrote:Will make it easier to fire Alford at the end of the year.
Seems like last time you went through this you lost out on your top targets and had to settle for Alford who I predicted was never going to turn out well for y’all.
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
I dont think predicting Alford to be the answer was much of a stretch. Who knows what he could have done without his kid hamstringing the program, but it is what it is. As for candidates? A lot of people like Larry L. Chris Collins, the dude at Vandy. There really isn't a big name right now, maybe Greg Marshall? Carmelo isn't destroying OKC fast enough sadly.

Billy Donovan at UCLA scares the crap out of me.....You think he’d take the gig with your current AD? Didn’t Greg Marshall already turn you guys down last time?MrBug708 wrote:I dont think predicting Alford to be the answer was much of a stretch. Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Donovan would outlast DG, but I dont see Donovan back in college, he's run has been pretty good, he could probably land another NBA job. Greg Marshall said he would speak about the job after his team was eliminated from the tournament. DG couldn't wait, he had to beat the deadline to avoid paying UNM a buyout for Alford, which he had to pay anyways.

UK is not a top 10 team, probably not even top 20 right now. Neither of these teams looked very impressive. The slightly less shitty team won.

PAC-12 is awful but 7-2 against the SEC this season. 4-1 against Alabama, Mizzou, A&M, and Kentucky. Yet somehow the SEC will get more teams into the NCAA tournament.

UCLA basketball is that race horse that looks great in the stable and wonderful at the first turn. But after the race you're cursing them for no effing heart and throwing your ticket on the floor as they fade out of the money.

Last time the UCLA job was open, it drew about as much interest as Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign. They can’t draw a big name. An up and comer is the best they can hope for.

Heard Rick Pitino is available this time.
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Billy Donovan would be nice but I think he has enough draw to get another NBA job and I'm not sure the timing would work out. Tony Bennett would be a good hire, he proved he can win outside of his dad's shadow. Chris Mack wouls also be fantastic, though I think Louisville might make the move for him first. The Drew at Vandy is underrated IMO but probably not a good enough of a season to pass the smell test even Jaime Dixon would be a great hire. Not sure gregg Marshall gets consideration this time around. Larry krys would also be intriguing because I think he can coach and he'd have more access to talent than he does at UtahFrybry02 wrote:If UCLA moves on from Alford, do you have a personal wish list? UCLA should walk through broken glass to Wichita if Marshall is interested. Dude might be a bit of a jackass, but he would have UCLA in the top 10-15 every year.
I doubt Donovan wants to make the jump back to college. There have been some good jobs out there that he's hung with the sinking OKC ship over. Why stick it out in a difficult NBA situation if that isn't his future?
No clue if Bennett would give up the good thing he has going. He would be a score, but...
I doubt UCLA scores a big, big name.

Willing to let UCLA win the conference and make a Final Four so they give Alford a 5 year extension.

UCLA has a snowball’s chance in hell at Bennett, Marshall, probably even Mack. It’s not a very good job, and these guys are all thriving at better programs.
Bruins are much lower down on the food chain. Look at their current coach. It should tell us something.

I'd actually rather trade Alford (good recruiter, can't do much with the talent when it's on campus) for his opposite. I want a guy who recruits worse (to allow us to steal talent) but coaches better (to help our RPI instead of Alford's underachieving).NYCat wrote:Willing to let UCLA win the conference and make a Final Four so they give Alford a 5 year extension.

Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
As has been discussed ad nauseum on here, we don’t need UCLA to be competitive as long as other programs are thriving. Oregon’s emergence under Altman has been great for the league; they’re our main competition for Pac supremacy at the moment. USC has some momentum, as does Stanford. UW and Utah have good coaches and should be in the mix for NCAA bids on a regular basis.Spaceman Spiff wrote:I'd actually rather trade Alford (good recruiter, can't do much with the talent when it's on campus) for his opposite. There’s one reason people talk about the Pac’s well being as somehow tied to UCLA: nostalgia. There’s this idea among some fans, mostly geriatric men in Tarzana, that the a return to the Wooden Years is right around the corner and that until that day comes, the Pac is forgotten. Tell that to Sean Miller and Dana Altman.
UCLA should hire Tyus Edney. Keep it in the family.
