Alford has a loaded squad next year. It would take quite a horrible coach to not win with that roster.

Not really an impact 1 and done player and a lack of veteran players. They will be good in 2 years but next year will be worse than this yearUofAlum05 wrote:Alford has a loaded squad next year. It would take quite a horrible coach to not win with that roster.

Alford sold him on UCLA by saying he could play SF. I thought I read that somewhere.

Could be true, but Jules Bernard and David Singleton, as well as Chris Smith will probably get first crack at the position. Plus we have a ton of posts, so he doesnt need to play below the rimTatetheGreat wrote:Alford sold him on UCLA by saying he could play SF. I thought I read that somewhere.

Bad decision on his part, then. Eh, he wanted to play locally. I'd much rather have Brown, UCLA is about the only school, besides maybe Oregon, where he wouldn't play Center.TatetheGreat wrote:Bad decision on his part, then. Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Is Shareef badly overrated or something? Why would he not get significant playing time next year, wherever he goes? ESPN's got him as the 29th best in his class, Rivals at 28, 247 at 33.

Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Dan Guerrero is too lazy to fire Alford. Plus he can probably count on UCLA cashing in on a good roster next year to justify delaying the inevitable coaching search. Who would Dan be listening to if he fired Alford anyway? The 7 or 8 vocal UCLA fans blogging on Bruins Nation? The thousands rest don't care, caught up in their LA life, or traffic.

Does anyone really? I mean, I know there are some places that are quick with the hook and a bit notorious for their firings, but....if you're firing coaches then that means acknowledging things aren't going the way you want them too. That's tough for most people, even more so when sports egos are involved.MrBug708 wrote:UCLA just doesnt like firing coaches
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

Fun rumor, UCLA is waiting until April to shitcan Alford as his buyout goes down by about 1.5 million and they intend to hire Musselman.

Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
It goes down by like 3 million, but I doubt that really happens. If they do, they should just fire DG for making April 30th as some sort of rollover in the buyout. Why not make it March 31st? If they are waiting that long and fire him, they have a bigger fish to fry for the head coach.ChooChooCat wrote:Fun rumor, UCLA is waiting until April to shitcan Alford as his buyout goes down by about 1.5 million and they intend to hire Musselman.
It was a fun read, seeing Garlick's take on the Arizona board. He's pretty far off on most of those comments.
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Alford will not get fired until he loses control of the program or has a terrible season with a loaded team. He continues to bring in elite talent because of his staff and the brand (UCLA has to be one of the easiest recruiting bases in all of college basketball). Once Howland's recruiting took a hit and had too many off-court issues, he was let go. Alford is mediocre at best, but he brings in talent, and if he has a couple of nice tournament runs due to talent alone, he might survive for awhile. It was a bad hire, but made out of desperation. UCLA can do better (not that I want to see it happen). Maybe the alumni will lose patience sooner rather than later. But if his monster class gets him to a final four, he is going to be safe.
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
The problem with this class coming in is that none of them are 1 and done impact guys

XAVIER’S COACHING SEARCH now includes Steve Alford. Alford’s representative(s) has made Xavier aware of the UCLA coach’s interest in the gig."

What exactly is DG waiting for? Alford doesn't want to be here. The fans don't want him here. Nobody likes the marriage of the two, yet DG is content to do nothing.

Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
I'm not sure any AD would want Alford enough to pay that buyout.
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Makes no sense. At UCLA, Alford has access to recruits and talent he never had at NM and Iowa, and he would never get those those 5 stars and highly ranked 4 stars at Xavier. They give him the best chance to win because all that UCLA talent is what masks his significant deficiencies as a head coach.

The people who think Alford is leaving UCLA are the same people who still think Miller is going to Pitt (even after they've hired Capel).
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Alford doesn't want to be here because he doesn't like living in Los Angeles. He wanted his kid at a bigger program and now that it's done, he's looking for an oi t before he's fires next year. But when nobody wants your head coach, you don't bother keeping him around anymore. It means he isn't good.midnightx wrote:Makes no sense. Today isn't over yet. Has Devonaire Doutrive sent in his NLI to Arizona?
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Doubt any guy signs a LOI with us. Probably just financial aid papers. Maybe O'Neal did the same with UCLA? One thing that sticks out to me is Bug said he did not think O'Neal would get much run with the bruins next year while with us he gets 20+ minutes probably.Maybe he was reminded of this?
