WSU is no fluke with the 17th best scoring O and 34th best scoring D . . . but it’s the Pac-12, anything can happen and usually does.

I agree. WSU is just a solid team. If the game was in Tucson, I'd feel more confident. I also think the "looking ahead" angle gets overplayed a lot, nice to have hope, I suppose.

We can win this game. Will we? Unlikely, but we can win it.

Weather for kickoff shows about 32 degrees and clear with a light breeze.

So WSU is well on its way to it's 3rd Rose Bowl or better in it's history and Arizona is ..................gonna do what Arizona usually does.

Shit area, freezing weather, in the middle of no-where with average facilities WSU builds on it's improbable football history while the beautiful campus, nice weather, lots of girls school in Arizona continues to live in mystifying mediocrity and obscurity.

Mike Price and Mike Leach can make history in Pullman as coaches while Arizona coaches just read about about making history while using every excuse in the book as to why they can't.

Too funny.

Foles is the only UA QB to take a snap in the NFL since UA was in the WAC.

Unless you are an avid fisherman like Mark Few, or a hunter, skier or anyone who enjoys snows, no idea why anyone would prefer eastern WA over southern AZ.

Tucson is more urban, has prettier girls, and a more active entertainment scene than the Palouse. UA also has better academics than WSU.
Fan support is a factor

Martin Stadium is the smallest stadium in the PAC. WSU reduced stadium size to 32,952 from 35,117 for the 2014 season.
Cool story. They also have huge fan support in the area and sell out or come very close to it ever game. Did you see gameday there? It was probably the wildest and biggest one ever

It was their first GameDay ever in 31 years. Of course they were going to have a great crowd.

What's the betting line for WSU not selling out 50% of their home games in the last 10 years? 32,952 capacity.

Least attended game last season at Wildcat Stadium was 36,651.

ESPN’s college football playoff predictor gives #8 WSU a 1.2% chance of making the playoffs, while #9 Ohio State has a 20% chance.

I’ve seen televised games there with half empty stadiums. Probably in one of their down years. Let’s not forget they suck on a recurring basis too.

Merkin I always enjoy your takes but if you’re honestly suggesting that Eastern WA’s enthusiasm for Cougar football is the same or less than Southern AZ’s enthusiasm for Wildcat football......then you are woefully misinformed. Cougs football is such a huge deal in that part of the state, almost the way Cats basketball is in Tucson. Yes in their Paul Wulff days when they were going 1-11 every year, the stadium was probably 60% Full...as would any stadium of any team who was that dreadful. If you’re going to talk about stadium size and total attendance numbers, the reason they are small is simply because of the obvious reason that the school is in Pullman. If Wazzu was in Spokane they would sell out a stadium the size of Arizona Stadium consistently and with ease. The equivalent would be if Arizona Stadium was in Sierra Vista......then what do you think our average attendance would be relative to Washington State’s?

This isn’t a Machina take on what our football attendance or civic enthusiasm SHOULD be....just a little clarification on the Wazzu vs Arizona attendance reality.

Also:
“While Washington State had a paid attendance of 31,982 in 2017, the Cougars' scanned attendance was 23,996.”

Look at the chart in the article. WSU inflates their attendance by a large number. Interestingly, Arizona seems to have the smallest delta between paid attendance and actual attendance. Bad fans!

Seriously? When our average attendance this year is quoted at 42,000 or whatever....that is the biggest crock of shit I’ve ever read in my life. In the 1st half of games his year we’ve got about 33k in that stadium and in the 2nd half of games we have about 23k in there. All year i’ve laughed to myself about the disparity in tickets sold vs asses in seats for our games. And again, I haven’t been to a game all year so i’m not arguing that our fans suck blah blah blah. Just stating what is and what isn’t.

After last year's debacle against Arizona, I don't think you will catch the Cougars flat footed on Saturday night. Last week was the classic "trap game" opportunity, well....and the following game after AZ is the annual Apple Cup disaster....

Not so fast my friends. This one is going to be close. Our ability to run it will really open up our passing game. Tate will have a huge game and his feet will offset their pass rush.

We shock the world on Saturday night 35-31

That would be amazing if it happens.

My concern is this: the underrated aspect of our recent success has been the {hyperbole voice on} nearly Desert Storm-like run defense. Unfortunately the pass defense over that same period has been awful. Does Washington State even hand the ball off to a running back? This just seems like a bad matchup for us.

We have two of the top 5 slot defenders according to the stats and our safeties have really played well of late. Wazzu will get theirs as we know. We need to do a better job in controlling the clock otherwise they will. Our run game will be the difference Saturday night.

This is going to be a game we give up a ton of yards. Just got to hope we can keep them out of the end zone. Statistically, WSU has a good defense so it will be interesting to see how our offense performs. As others have touched on, the key is our running game. If we can run the ball I think we have a chance but if we can't, I don't like our odds.

JJ has been an every down back to everyone's surprise, but not sure how that can last.

I'm not sure why I skimmed that but cold weather shouldn't be that big of a deal. It is pretty easy to warm up and stay warm if you're a starter. The backups/coaches are the ones who have to suffer in the cold. Cold weather is just an excuse for poor play if it happens but it won't be the reason.

WSU is beatable but its going to be very hard to come out of the Palouse with a win.

WSU has, in my opinion, the best pass blocking offensive line in the PAC12.

I would like to see AZ roll the dice on defense and play a safety/LB in tight coverage (every down) on the WSU running backs coming out of the backfield as receivers.
Deny WSU the relief valve/dump off pass. This forces them to throw the ball downfield on every down. Their chances of hitting us with a big play increase, but so do the chances of an INT or just a simple incompletion.
