Yep, over at TOS chief kept saying we were taking transfers like Adonis Smith (who?) because the RB position was going to be horrible.

From the ESPN Blog:
Your top five Pac-12 freshmen heading into Week 7:

Arizona freshman running back Nick Wilson is already among the Pac-12 leaders.

RB Nick Wilson, Arizona - 90 rushes, 574 yards, 6 TD | 8 receptions, 67 yards, 1 TD

Wilson already has accounted for three 100-yard rushing games in just five appearances for the Wildcats, and through those five games he has become Arizona’s leading rusher. Wilson is second in the conference in rushing yards per game (114.8) and seventh in the conference in all-purpose yards per game (128.2). Through four games he has already accounted for 16 rushes of 10-plus yards (tied for 25th in the country).

What ESPN.com scouts said (before the season): “Wilson is a home run hitter with the playing strength and speed needed to wear down opponents and shorten the game in the fourth quarter. Early playing time at the BCS level is a definite possibility, especially if route-running and ball-catching skills keep improving and catch up to his running skills.”

Berk said in his chat today that he was in a yellow jersey and not participating the past two days. Odds are he'll be listed as questionable.

Terris Jones-Grigsby featured on the official site. He is an amazing story. When he walked on to the team fans speculated that it was only as a favor to his brother Nic. But TJG earned his own scholarship by doing the dirty work on special teams. Now as a fifth year senior he shares the starting running back spot. Well done Wildcat, well done!

Image
“I wasn’t given much of a chance when I first got here,” said Jones-Grigsby. “Coach Rodriguez and the rest of the staff must have seen the fire in me working out with the scout team and they rewarded me with a scholarship. I know that I have a strong supporting cast with them, and I’m glad they gave me a chance.”

“It was a little stressful at first,” Jones-Grigsby said. “It feels good now because I feel like I have a big role in the offense. I’m settled in now and ready for the long season ahead of us.”

The senior came back from his injury on fire in the biggest game of the season, a Thursday night showdown against the second-ranked Oregon Ducks in Autzen Stadium. He finished the game with 27 carries, 115 yards, four receptions, 95 yards and the game-winning rushing touchdown with about three minutes left in the game. Arizona won the game in dramatic fashion after Jones-Grigsby punched in the go-ahead touchdown. Linebacker Scooby Wright stripped Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota to seal off the win, and the celebration was on.

“We used Friday and Saturday as a little celebration,” Jones-Grigsby said. “It’s in the past now, and we are completely focused on the USC game. We have another tough opponent coming into our house and they are going to be hungrier than ever, so we know we have to prepare well.”

Gimino with a great story on TJG.
When Rich Rodriguez and his coaching staff arrived after the 2011 season, they found they had a walk-on running back who was academically ineligible.

Geez. Didn't they have like a million other things to worry about?

But Rodriguez told the team upon his first meeting - "You're my guys" - and then he went about proving he meant what he said. He wasn't about to kick anyone, even ineligible walk-on running back Terris Jones-Grigsby, to the curb.

"My sophomore year - these coaches weren't here yet - I had a few problems academically. I almost called it quits," Jones-Grigsby said.

"They really sat me down and talked to me about things. Instead of saying, 'This guy is a thorn in our way and is always going to be that,' they sat me down and wanted to see what was wrong, what was going on, so they could actually help. I knew right then they were a different coaching staff.

"From that day forward, I knew I needed to step it up. The only thing I didn't want to do is let them down."

Any word on how bad TJG is? Hopefully the bye week will help heal everyone up.

Hard to have Lightning without the Thunder.

I thought Baker played pretty well actually, but UA had trouble running the ball all night, and they need both TJG and Wilson to be healthy and productive for UA to be at their best.

I was impressed with Baker.

Less impressed with the running play calling and execution, esp. the call for the 2 point conversion. Reminded me of the Stoops' goal line offense of giving the ball to the 5'9" guy up the middle 3 straight plays.

Forgot who did it, (Winger?) but miss the charting of plays.

I saw several people on Twitter say that was Anu's fault-bad read. He could have walked in or thrown to Hill for an easy 2.

Not to look back, but I couldn't help thinking Scott or BJ makes that read and conversion in a flash of daylight. Obviously, Anu doesn't keep as much as BJ did, but when he does he doesn't seem to get the holes and the big quick chunks on the zone read. His yards seem to be more from scrambling and elusiveness.

We were out of time outs and that might have hurt a little. Anu was not a threat in the read option all night. Other then keeping it and then throwing it he didn't tuck and tote all game.

You almost wish he would have gone to the sideline and spent the 25 with RRR and taken the 5 yards back to the 7 (we were at the 2 because of the PI in the endzone) and run slants with Hill and Jones

Mistakes happen all the time for other schools, you just notice it more when it is your school.

Morning of September 27th, Sports Center had four logos up previewing two games. The Notre Dame logo, the Syracuse logo, the USC logo and the Oregon logo. Too bad it was Oregon State playing USC that night.

Again it happens all the time with lots of other schools, you just don't notice it as often.

That's the media. I'd expect the AFCA to have a better clue as to where we're located.

Sports XChange has an article focused on the impact freshman RBs are having this year for "contenders". After 12 paragraphs with quotes and actual effort on 3 other backs Nick gets this:
And in the crowded Pac-12 South, Arizona’s Nick Wilson is the leading freshman runner among Power 5 conference teams. He is averaging 114.8 yards per game for a Wildcats team that is 5-1 and heads to Washington State this week after a bye.

Although if Anu was up for the award maybe he split votes with Nick. Personally I would have given it to Anu.

Is the award only looking at Pac-12 games? Because Freeman and Wilson were similar in those games, Wilson's output was way higher OOC.

The at Washington St. 10 carry 18 yards and at UCLA 9 carries for 18 yard back to back games definitely sunk Wilson.

That was right when he was hurt though.

Oh well, he can win Player of the Year next season.

No one was hurt as bad as the Oregon linemen, haven't you heard? They had to play their punter, place kicker, and back-up place kicker on the O-line that game. And they were STILL almost good enough to beat us. Truly remarkable.

Haha so true. The injury excuse stuff for Oregon that game was ridiculous, and really just a crutch to push a narrative. They went out and crushed UCLA by 25 on the road the next week.

Everyone has injuries, it's football. Live with the results.

It's not as egreigous as Scooby bring left off the Butkus list or a lot of the other things we've seen. That said, remember what happened last year when Ka'Deem went up against the guy everyone said was the best. Extra motivation never hurts (not that there should be any needed for this one.)
