That's a bummer. The new AMD 3700XT looks like a good deal...
I ended up going with a simple MSI R7 240 card. We don't do any streaming or gaming on this computer so it should be just fine.

Why do Prius drivers almost universally drive slow?

You're already getting 55 miles per gallon - are you trying so save even more money?

If I ever get one I am going to drive it like a bat out of hell.

It's called "porpoising". You gotta be a hybrid owner. Yeah, it's a thing.

If you're trying to coordinate/plan trips, there is a massive gap in the quality of assistance that can be provided until you inform people of the fucking dates you need to travel. Please shut up and lets figure that out first...

Fucking you acute lower back pain brought on by my leaning over to wash my face.

Like drop to the ground and have spent the weekend pounding ibuprofen and laying flat on ice packs type of pain, stiffness, and inability to bend.

Seriously.

I’ll officially admit I’m middled aged

It's getting to the point where you have to ask intimate details of a business model in order to tip ethically. I'm getting sick of this. I know I'm a curmudgeon, but I ain't pinin' for the 50s when I just want to be able to tip someone without a forensic examination of a company's balance sheet and worker payment policy.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/29/tech/tip ... index.html" target="_blank

"When a customer places an order on Grubhub, they aren't told if there are hourly minimums in their market and if their driver has met or is likely to meet them without the aid of a tip. This makes it impossible to know if tipping will subsidize Grubhub's own payment to the driver, or is an added payment to the driver."

Do I have to get a CFO to debrief me? SMFH

That's my standard, but optimally I want to know how the company treats its people.

Sorry LH you know I have nothing but love for you but...

Working with academicians on anything is annoying and tedious. Don’t want to get into specifics other than I was tasked by someone in leadership to develop a project, have developed it, and have a world renown speaker willing to present but am now getting push back from those employed in a university setting on “how relevant is this to our our field” after expressing interest on the initial email chain.

It may be failure to communicate in my part, but now i have to go back to the speaker with questions from committee.

So so so thankful fate took my off my plans of climbing the academic ladder, many moons ago.

It isn’t without reason that the word academic has these varied definitions:

ac·a·dem·ic
/ˌakəˈdemik/
adjective
1.
relating to education and scholarship.
"academic achievement"
synonyms: educational, scholastic, instructional, pedagogical; More
2.
not of practical relevance; of only theoretical interest.
"the debate has been largely academic"
synonyms: theoretical, conceptual, notional, philosophical, unpragmatic, hypothetical, speculative, conjectural, conjectured, suppositional, putative; More
noun
1.
a teacher or scholar in a college or institute of higher education.
synonyms: scholar, lecturer, don, teacher, educator, instructor, trainer, tutor, professor, fellow, man/woman of letters, highbrow, thinker, bluestocking; More

In academia, things usually fall apart like this. Sounds like the people in the university setting you're referring to have skin in the game. But if they don't, why can't you tell them excuse me and please fuck off?

Because it just doesn't get through to them without semicolons and footnotes.

It's been a really shitty week for my extended family. My cousin's husband in Chicago, a great guy, passed from lymphoma at age 67 (Fuck cancer). They found the bodies of my cousin's son-in-law and brother in Missouri (I posted the story of them being missing from Wisconsin in the Random Thoughts thread). My only aunt on my dad's side who has advanced Alzheimer's fell and broke her hip in Racine.

So here's a little humor from my family. My mom thinks LOL means "Lots Of Love". This leads to some very awkward texts.

Oh gees man, just seeing this.... my thoughts are with you and your extended family.

And this is not really venting, but my 101 year old Gramma .... the matriarch of our family, died peacefully in her sleep last night. She lived a very full life. She has been saying for years she just wants to go to sleep 1 night and then not wake up. And that's exactly how she passed.

Really sorry to hear that (unless it was for the best - then I’m moderately sorry to hear that).

99 sounds like a nice long life. I hope she lived it well.

hey asshole, i don't want to hear you bitch about your 5-10 thousand dollar item you didnt need but bought anyway cause you have that much cash to waste on non-necessities and now are unhappy with one feature of it. I'm a bit too busy trying to figure out how to pay for real shit, like medical shit, so fuck off and die in a fire started by your newest purchase that costs more than my car is worth.

thanks.

It happens enough to really piss me off: either restaurants are too fucking lazy to update their wine list prices and just bump up a couple bucks on the tab, or the servers are ripping me off and making it look like the former is taking place. Either way, when I call them on it and get the stinkeye from some well-tipped pissant it chaps my ass.

Reminds me of a Tucson place that used to be on Tanque Verde, En Fuego or some such: a full week after Mother's Day they still had their "augmented holiday prices" on the tab. Dude looked like he wanted an apology from me!

Just for drill I watch people's protocol when they pay their tabs, and it appears they just sign and split. Being a server ain't fun, and success in running a restaurant is measured in how long it takes to go tits up. But there's gotta be a whole lot of ripoff in between.

People who hold grudges for over my own personal career choices made 6 years ago.

To this day, I’m glad I didn’t take your shitty job, cost of living in your locale and working under you would’ve been miserable.

I’m at your fucking dinner table, the least you could’ve done was look over rather then find ways to make yourself seem preoccupied so you wouldn’t have to acknowledge my presence. Given the power differential between the respective stages of our careers, I let you be, ate dinner, chit chatted a bit with the two next to me, and extracted when I could to go “mingle”.

Tomorrow’s working group meeting is going to be super fun...

Ran into a similar situation recently. Social situation with a guy I turned down a job with.

Worse outcome than being ignored..... he pretended not to remember me. Dick.

Thanks chi, appreciate you sharing your experience.

Any tips for tomorrow? It will be a small working group of about 8-10 which I’m the chair of, but this person’s opinion carries lots of weight because of their experience and connections. I’m anticipating they’ll be there.

I’m thinking a simple “nice to see you again, thank you for your advice on the telephone meetings, it’s been helpful” and leave it at that.

That being said our last substantive one and one talk was when I turned down the job many moons ago by phone. In the big conference settings the ignoring has its “plausible deniability” but there is no avoiding tomorrow, unless this person doesn’t show, which they might not.

I guess I’m also venting about “conferencing” in general. It’s been three packed days, one more to go, and I’m tired. So much agenda setting behind the causal friendly banter.

I think the approach you outlined is your best course of action. Butter them up just a little and move forward.

My mistake was letting Dickface introduce himself to me instead of me setting the tone.

Him: “Hi, I’m Dickface Von Cockgobbler. I don’t believe we’ve met.”

Me: “Hi Dickface, I'm Chicat. We actually met a few months ago.”

Him: “Oh really?”

Me: “Yes, I interviewed for the territory position you had open. We spoke a few times.”

Him: “Hmmm, I don’t remember. Back in April?”

Me: “Yes, you piece of dog shit shaped like a fat human. Back in April.”

Him: “Oh... hmmm...”

Me: “Good talk, Dickface. I hope someone drops a slab of concrete on your enormous head.”

Wow, really? That happened to me once in Sharjah and I went and slept in my office. I guess you could hire somebody to wave palm fronds vaguely in your direction?

Somehow our evaporative cooler is out, too. Found a guy to come look at it later today. Maybe he’ll have the right part, but I bet there’s nothing to be found until Monday.

Aren't there cooler part shops in town? It's a motor and a pump, you could fix that.

There should be a pepper mill on every goddamned restaurant table........and that's the end of it.

Agreed.

I've taken to challenging waiters when they stick a baseball bat sized pepper mill in my face before I've had a chance to take a bite.

How the hell do I know if I need pepper or not before I taste it?
Does your chef have a phobia against pepper so you are kind of the warning message "Caution: this dish is not seasoned properly!"
Look there is a pepper shaker on the table already! Have you judged that I am not competent to use it just from my looks or something?
