Gunnell Hot Takes

Post by OSUCat »

Gunnel gets the win as the starter. In general came away impressed. Gunnel seemed on point with his decision making. I have no idea what to make of his throwing motion, it looks funky to me. But I don’t see an arm strength issue, but maybe a zip issue. Maybe, having zip on the ball is arm strength. I don’t know. Basically, a complete opposite of Tate. It looks clear to me that Gunnel fits Mazzone offense better than Tate. The screen game is better and he had no issues checking down. Seemed nervous. Some throws seemed jittery. But, he’s a freshman I don’t knock the first start.

Tate can win and lose you games. Gunnel will managed the hell out of a game.

Oh, and Mazzone was crazy to have Gunnel throw 40+.

No picks, no fumbles, 66% completion rate...

And a win

Good first start for a true freshman

needs to pick up pressure better

needs to not float passes high (especially not short throws, and over the middle)

but hey he's a freshman so it's understandable.

did like several of his passes, did like several of his decisions, didn't like some other ones.

Overall a very impressive performance for the first start of a true freshman (as phylek states)

Also yes as OSUCat points out, it was stupid to put the ball on his arm 40+ times, but that's mazzone for you.
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

it was a good start overall. No interceptions. He did overthrow or underthrow quite a few open receivers but he seemed to settle down later. That was a difficult game for a freshman to cut his teeth on and I'll give him a solid B.

He won and that’s the only stat I care about from a QB. Lots to be positive and negative about his performance. No doubt our running game is not as good without a threat of a running QB.

I want to win all the games we can and maybe Tate is that answer but I wouldn’t mind if Gunnell played every snap the rest of the year and got him ready for a big jump next year

Once he started setting his feet, he was money. Had to shake off the nerves first.

Tate overthrows and underthrows receivers every gamer too, although GG's first pass attempt was a short one and still hit at the receiver's feet. Nerves for sure, and certainly can't blame him.

Pretty cool head though, which the most amazing feat, along with no picks in 44 attempts. Tate might have had one or two, he has 4 picks in 79 attempts this season.

Speaking of Tate, what a great sideline demeanor. Just the complete opposite of Anu Solomon who would go sit and sulk on a chair away from his teammates.

That is the first thing that came to mind when I saw Tate excited and talking to Gunnell. Anu acted like a 12-year old who had his ball taken away from him. He didn't care about the team if he wasn't playing.

yeah that's not a stat to be overlooked either. no picks in 44 attempts in your first game ever as a true freshman. pretty impressive.

was also nice seeing tate being interactive with his teammates.

I thought Peterson dropped his first pass which was perfectly thrown and the second one was at the receiver's feet.

No doubt I am mistaken! I started hitting the (wine) bottle around 4pm and didn't stop until end of the game!

I think that was a great 1st start for a freshman qb.

I am looking forward to see him develop and expect him to have a great tenure here.

Going to be a Shame if we burn a year if he plays in 5 games. If Tate aggravates that hammy Sumlin might be forced to go RhettRod or just shut down the Tate era for the betterment of the program

Besides his turf toe and ankle injuries from last year.

Tate is glass.

Tate has played in 4 games this season....he could redshirt and transfer still.

This will be a interesting week regarding the qb’s. Should Tate not be healthy enough to play and GG plays great at rado and gets us to 4-1 then what? Healthy or not, it might be a changing of the guard....

Sweet, we'll get one more game of Tate then.

Seems Chief likes to take any contrarian view that will get him noticed.

Chief is a self-satisfied prick. Does that mean he’s a Doyle guy? Then he’s definitely a Doyle guy.

Gunnel looked pretty good for his first legitimate action. His short-armed throwing motion isn't the best and the arm strength is slightly concerning. Although, I think the arm strength is good enough for the college game. Kind of reminded me of a Jake Browning where the ball just doesn't come out with a ton of velocity but can obviously be good enough.
