Exclusive: Humans placed in suspended animation for the first time

Doctors have placed humans in suspended animation for the first time, as part of a trial in the US that aims to make it possible to fix traumatic injuries that would otherwise cause death.

Samuel Tisherman, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, told New Scientist that his team of medics had placed at least one patient in suspended animation, calling it “a little surreal” when they first did it. He wouldn’t reveal how many people had survived as a result.

The technique, officially called emergency preservation and resuscitation (EPR), is being carried out on people who arrive at the University of Maryland Medical Centre in Baltimore with an acute trauma – such as a gunshot or stab wound – and have had a cardiac arrest. Their heart will have stopped beating and they will have lost more than half their blood. There are only minutes to operate, with a less than 5 per cent chance that they would normally survive.

EPR involves rapidly cooling a person to around 10 to 15°C by replacing all of their blood with ice-cold saline. The patient’s brain activity almost completely stops. They are then disconnected from the cooling system and their body – which would otherwise be classified as dead – is moved to the operating theatre.

A surgical team then has 2 hours to fix the person’s injuries before they are warmed up and their heart restarted. Tisherman says he hopes to be able to announce the full results of the trial by the end of 2020.

Is your company still working with SpaceX? If so, that must be pretty satisfying to see SpaceX kicking some serious ass

Yep, we currently make about 70 different parts for them including heat shields, brackets, and fittings.

That is cool. I'm starting to get excited about rocket launches again. I just couldn't get enough of them when Mercury and Gemini were going up. I was a bit jaded by the time Apollo started, and really depressed by the explosion, then really excited again by the actual Moon expeditions. The shuttle and station were cool, but LEO is just not where its at. We should have been on Mars by the late 90's.

At this point, we’re all crossing our fingers that the dying star Betelgeuse will hurry up and explode already, because who doesn’t love a good show? The red giant star (visible in the constellation Orion) has been growing dimmer since late last year, leading many to speculate it could soon go supernova. Scientists operating the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope have released new images of the supergiant star—and yep, it looks weird.

Not only is Betelgeuse dimming, it seems to be changing shape.

Australian coronavirus vaccine goes into test production
A factory in Melbourne has started producing a test dose of a potential coronavirus vaccine which scientists will begin testing on animals this week.

The test vaccine was developed in just six weeks by University of Queensland researchers using world-first molecular clamp technology invented in Australia.

The blueprint for the test vaccine was sent to a CSIRO manufacturing lab in Clayton on Thursday night. On Friday morning vaccine production began.

The University of Queensland team say they have not perfected their design yet, and more tweaking will be done over the next week.

The batch being brewed at Clayton is merely the first test dose, a process done in part to trial the factory's systems.

Nevertheless, it shows the incredible progress made by the researchers – less than two months after the first recorded coronavirus death, a test vaccine is in production.

Hopefully it goes off today. Biggest manned spaceflight event in the US since the first space shuttle launch in 1981. Everyone should watch today. It's on ABC and CBS and on the discovery channel and livestreamed on YouTube.

Half hour til liftoff and everything is a go but the weather. They're just worried about the leftover precipitation around the area. Probably will be waiting til the last moment to decide. If you haven't yet then make sure to tune into the YouTube SpaceX stream or Discovery channel.
